How to change the oil in a VW Beetle
This video shows you how to change the oil in your VW Beetle, Kombi, Ghia and Type 3 Variant. Please note that the Type 4 engine is different, and has a different process.

Did the oil change on my 67 bug. I noticed the oil bath air cleaner also drained after draining from the oil drain bolt on the bottom of the engine, after filling up and letting it run and get warm and rechecking the oil, the oil bath air cleaner did not fill back up with oil, so I need to refill myself? Or do I have problem here I need to fix

Can you do a video as to how to tighten your shifter screws? I have a 68 beetle and its pretty loose even when I go to first gear. This morning I tried going on 3rd gear but there was a rattling/vibrating reaction which at the end didn't let me go to third until I tried it again

Hi there, under the back seat, in the centre of the tunnel there should be an inspection plate held by a screw. Remove the plate and you’ll see the shift coupling. The bushes in it are most likely worn. While you’re watching the coupling, get someone to move the gear stick in and out of gear, and left and right while it’s in neutral, and you should not see any play in the coupling. If you need help replacing it, I can sort a video out no worries, thanks!

Hey my 63 beetle plate doesnt have that 21mm bolt, just the small 10mm bolts.

Some engines don’t have the drain plug so just loosen the 10mm nuts on the sump plate and let the majority of the oil drain. Cheers!

Technically, yes. A Motul 20-W50 mineral oil rich in ZDDP. I’ve been using it for years now.

as far as oil its your local climate that dictates oil viscosity. here in ohio i only drive it in summer, 30w or 20-50 ok. my buddy had one in alaska it ran on 10w. yeah, 10w. and yeah, stay away from synthetics.

Yep, oil is indeed climate dependent, we don’t often talk about that in places where we have mild winters and hot summers etc. Mineral oil, all the way! Cheers

Full is 2.6 qts or halfway between the marks. Do not add the full 3 qts. Owners manual
