Classical Gas played on the original guitar: Oscar Teller 8P

As a teenager I was triggered towards the classic guitar by the
composition of Mason Williams: Classical Gas. It was a number
1 hit in the U.S.A. back in 1968. Only this year I found a video on
RU-vid in which Mason Williams himself explains the way he
got the guitar that was labelled "Cordova" but came from the
Oscar Teller Lutherie. I was just searching for more information
around this guitar after I was able to buy a "to be restored" guitar
for only 75 euro's on an auction. I stumbled finally on that video in
which Mason Williams explains the way it went around "Classical
Gas" and the guitar he used for that recording. That appeared to
be the same model as I'm playing here now.
As the double inlay on the head attests (among others) it is the
same grade model. Oscar Teller produces this 8P model up to
these days but I would suggest them to re-introduce the double
head inlay and have it named: The Mason Williams model. If one
wants to make a commercial move around Oscar Teller guitars
then it would be this one! They already made a commercial move
by selling the Oscar Teller guitars under the "Cordova" brand.
They figured a Spanish name for a nylon stringed guitar would
sell better.
The circle is round now for me! For that reason I recorded the
song again and I hope you like it. Played with a more classical
sound in mind, maybe a bit contrary to the original recording.

Thank you, and on my channel there is a lot more to discover though only the well known compositions have the interest of the listeners here. What to think of a guitar lesson around the accompaniment of "Hijo de la Luna": Almost 30.000 hits! I'm glad to be of help to others as that was what I sometimes missed in my youth.

Absolutely cleverly written and to a certain point unique as there are a lot of syncope rhythms in it and it swings in a way a medieval work doesn't do. It swings in another way the South American music does. But I wouldn't call someone a genius when he or she is able to play this piece correctly. At least, I do not consider myself a genius to begin with.

@@2011Noud Though you are right about there being many excellent versions, in your case it's the guitar itself that makes all the difference. For me, music isn't only about the finished song, but how it got there and the history behind it. Over sixty years ago, my mother instilled in me why it's always important to experience the big picture when she played her favorite Big Band and jazz albums. What a joy it must be to play Mason's guitar. Mom taught me unique ways to appreciate music from a very early age. I love the back-stories and the inspiration behind my favorite music.

Bravo. Nicely done. As an amateur guitarist I toyed and teased my way to being able to ‘play’ Classical Gas. After years of working on it and then putting it off and back on I finally stuck to it and recorded myself on my Takamine playing Mason’s song. I started with simple approaches. But to even get to a point to go through the many chord changes (if I remember right it was over a 100) and picking (arpeggios and lead runs) to play through the entire song was an accomplishment for me. This song at Mason’s tempo was just over 3 minutes long. I used his sheet music and his original recording but eventually I found my comfort zone. It’s the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal. So my cover was more like ‘Classical Gas KISS’. Ha. Whatever. You most likely get what I mean. My version pales in comparison to yours. Thank you. Cheers!

The German school of guitar building indeed differs from the Spanish built instruments. They tend to be a bit more mellow and that was probably the reason Andres Segovia played on a Hauser for a long time. But I do not understand that Teller while still producing this guitar never provided a "Mason Williams" model.... Remarkable is that the bridge form seems to be copied from the Hauser guitars of that time anyway.

@@2011Noud I'm sorry if your ego got hurt by my average, but not mean opinion. I can give you my opinionated criticism though if you like? Problem is, even though it's not bad, you're ego still wants and expects to feel as though you wrote this and I've never heard 20 or more recitals of a piece played exactly the way it was written by 20 different people, all trying to sound exactly the same. You can either play it fluently or practice to improve with experience to sound the same as everybody else in your class. Personally I prefere to be out of that training box of discipline clones. Try it sometime. It's really fun and helps with creativity and your mood will change for the better too. Play it Tommy's way or throw some of your own bits in. Cut your nails live a little, become a rebel Get a little Lucy and rock it out on a Gibo Page style? Creative shitzngigz. Curious... Would you play Cavatina how it was originally written by Stan or play it the only way it's played good and made sense? The Master Williams corrected way.

@@wallywalpamur4960 I think to understand what you mean. When I want to wander around in a musical sentence I rather improvise than hold on to notes that indeed everybody is able to play. As for classical pieces: To the majority of the audience they will be played similar. It is often about small pauses played. The"in between moments" that often can make it more magical. These differences can be so slight.... Apart from all that I' consider myself just a guitar player who worked hard to reach a certain level. No more than that. But there is one thing that likely sets me apart from a lot of "copyists" so to say: As I played for more than 40 years in a band keeping and holding a good tempo is something a player should go for. No matter what genre of music. That's the fundament of playing and making music to me. I will probably (most likely) die but that rhythm clock keeps ticking, even then!

@@2011Noud All good, I get it. And Cavatina? Have you ever noticed in just that one part where that 1 bass note is missing and does not sound right in not only the original how it was written but a majority of players repeat as if it's sounds right because that's how he wrote it..and then when John Williams plays it, it's fixed and so is some anxiety? lol.
