Cook It Like a German is back with a new episode, hosted - of course - by none other than DW Food expert Felicitas Then. Today, she’s sharing everything she knows about the classic German lentil soup with her guest - Nikhilesh Dhure, from India. Together, they prepare the vegetables for the soup, while discussing lentil dishes from both Germany and India - see what they whisked up.

RECIPE
Lentil Soup
Ingredients for 4 people, preparation time about 45 minutes, plus soaking time.
Ingredients:
250 g dried plate lentils, soak in water
1 onion
2 carrots
1 piece of celeriac
2 large potatoes
150 g streaky pancetta
1 leek
1 tablespoon butter
1 liter beef stock or vegetable stock
1 to 2 tablespoons vinegar (e.g. brandy vinegar)
1 tsp. sugar
marjoram
black pepper, freshly ground
nutmeg
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon hot mustard
salt
4 wiener sausages
1 small bunch of flat-leaf parsley
fresh sourdough bread
Preparation:
Soak the lentils if necessary (follow package directions). Then finely dice the onion into small pieces. Dice the carrots, celery and potatoes. Cut the bacon into small cubes as well, dice the potatoes in slightly larger chunks. Cut the leek into slices.
Now heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a pot and fry the bacon in it. Then add the onions first, followed by the rest of the vegetables. Fill everything up with broth and add the lentils. Leave to simmer for about 20 - 30 minutes until there is a creamy consistency.
In between, season with vinegar, pepper, sugar, marjoram, bay leaf and some mustard. Don’t add salt until the end. Finally, heat the sausages in the lentil soup either in slices or whole. Chop the parsley, pour over the soup and serve with fresh German bread.
