Classico ATLAS Mason Jars Re-Use for Canning? | Useful Knowledge

Can you re-use Classico Pasta Sauce ATLAS mason jars for canning? I do. Ball lids fit these 24 ounce size jars perfectly. I can in the Classico ATLAS mason jar. In this video, we show that the glass content is there but are they tough enough for canning?
It amazes me the people think that these majors jars are not capable of canning items. I have used these for about five years. They make great blueberry syrup jars because they are 24 ounces. Classico Atlas mason jars have proven themselves tough enough for my canning.
Last year in 2021, we had a huge crop of blueberries. I canned about 25 jars of blueberry syrup in these Classico ATLAS mason jars. They worked great and looked really cool for Christmas gifts.

I can in all spaghetti sauce jars, pickle jars and salsa jars. Any jar whose lid has teeth, a rubber ring and a button top. I use them over and over. Never a crack, never a broken seal. 30 years and counting.

I didn't even need to weigh these jars, I could feel how heavy they are! I use them both water bath & pressure canned! Love 'em!! Years ago, many products were sold in jars that the thrifty housewives used for canning for many years!! I'm in my 60's and am using a lot of old jars from my mom & even my grandmother. Grandma used to tell stories about being so excited to get a new canning jar when she bought groceries!! Some of them were colored & lovely shapes!! EXCELLENT VIDEO! Many accidental rolling out of the Fridge drop tests have proven to me ATLAS mason jars are MUCH more break resistant than Ball or Kerr! Weight of the jar does not matter as much as the composition and tempering of the actual glass. PS: much to my chagrin, the lady demo-ing Classico sauce at the big box warehouse would not let me fish all those beautiful ATLAS jars out of her trash can, what a sinful waste. The Regulators forbid it she said.

Yes, we've been using them for water bath and pressure canning. They don't fail any more often than our commercial jars or the ancient canning jars I inherited from my mother who inherited them from her mother in law and aunts. We did run into some very similar jars (can't remember what they originally had in them at the store) that just had "Mason" moulded on the side. Their necks were slightly undersized and wouldn't seal with a standard mason lid.

I love these kind of videos. So I subbed. I have 24 Oz Ball jars and I love them. I weighed 3 of them for you ... 13.75, 13.75 and 13.85. They are a little weighty it seems. I would have never weighed them if it were not for your video. I found the results interesting. I have heard it is the ridges on the bottom base that determine if a jar is capable of pressure canning. For Example, if there is a raised dot matrix style ring around the bottom (check out your Ball jars) then it is safe for pressure canning. I do not know if this is accurate or not.

@jeannie.getmetothecountry8708
I have used the Classico Pasta Sauce for years and have had no problems. They are great for chicken legs because they slide out and don't get stuck under the rim. They usually will hold three legs which is enough meat for my husband and I to garnish our salads. The broth will season a pot of rice later. I wait until the legs go on sale and do a big canning. They are also great for canning pickle spears and asparagus spears or other things that are hard to get out of a jar.

Ball does make a 1 1/2 pt. jar. I have 2 boxes of them but have never weighed them. I'm assuming they would be equal to the Atlas jars in size. I also have been saving them. I have some of the old Atlas mason quart jars that I'm still using. There is just too much "hype" out there. According to the "experts" going out of the box is a no-no. Well, with the way the "experts" are thinking, going out of the box may just save and help us. My grandmother dried her apples and pears on her gas heater in her living room and no one ever got sick or died. Today, everything must be thermostatically "controlled" at the proper temperature to avoid illness. People today are getting sick more than ever because they don't have enough good and bad bacteria in their bodies to help ward off illnesses. I'm pushing 74 and am doing things the way my grandmother did - she was born in 1889. Thank you Grandma!!!!! I agree with your decision to use the Atlas jars.

Awesome!! Thanks so much for your comments! I agree with you. Many, many people write articles and influence canning and storage methods. However, I honestly believe that these folks have little understanding of what they are talking about. Definitely not first hand learning from the elders and old timers. Folks on the internet would probably lose it if they saw how people dried apples back in the day. From screens of apples laying in the sun to your Grandma’s heater. Folks found what worked and used it. Thanks for your comment and reminding me of my grandparents!

I am not much of a "rebel canner", but I re-use Classico jars to store emergency water using my pressure canner. I figure it's pretty low-risk if a seal fails (just boil the water for at least 5 minutes before consuming to re-sanitize). If the jar breaks in the canner (which hasn't happened yet), it's not like you've wasted a jar of actual food. That way I feel comfy canning my actual botulism-prone foods "by the books", but I can still have a productive way to re-use these jars. Canning water is pretty easy (the NCHFP recommendation is a 10 minute water bath) and you can easily fill empty space in your canner in any other canning recipe that requires at least a 10 minute processing time. The jars are also great for "dry canning" (using a canning lid vacuum sealer) for dry beans and my dehydrated veggies or any half-opened packages of shelf stable stuff.

I talked to a Classico rep. The person said that the company uses the Atlas Mason jar name as a marketing ploy. The company uses thinner glass to save on shipping costs. There is also a film on the glass to prevent scratches. I wouldn’t use it personally - I put too much time and effort into canning to have the jars break.
@useful.knowledge
@useful.knowledge Год назад
Hi. It’s definitely a marketing ploy but as shown in the video, the glass content by weight is there and I have never had one to break on me. I can all of my blueberry syrup in them every year and will continue to do so. Also, check the comments…..lots of folks are using them successfully.

So if the Classico rep told you the moon was made of green cheese you'd believe him? He's a marketing rep and he isn't going to say anything that would encourage anyone to reuse their jars and risk losing his job over a lawsuit. "Useful Knowledge" just proved to you about the glass thickness.

I never knew the original mason lids could fit on any Atlas jars! I really only have the small Atlas jars (4oz) and those have a more typical nondescript jar mouth that doesn't match mason threading, which I find a bummer. I need some 24 oz jars bc you're right, this is just a good size!

I use any glass jar that came with another product in it. From the store to can any garden produce I grow. I have had great success. Minimal failure if any. Actually, I may have had more failure with canning jar than any reused jar. Most often I purchase bulk goods and i re-can it in reused jars. Done it for many many years. Never had an issue. I’ll bet you can buy a case of the spaghetti sauce. And pay a few more cents than what you pay for a case of canning jars. So you’re getting product and canning jars. What a deal.

Your calculations assume the weight to size of jar is linear. I don't know if that is accurate when scaling volume. But others point out these are sealed at the factory so water bath should be fine. However, you mentioned the company that makes these did not endorse using these for canning so they must have a good legal reason to say that. I'd say use at your own risk and not be surprised if it fails. Overall though I did appreciate measuring multiple jars to get an average weight.

OK I have a question on the lids. Are the lids and rings interchangeable on the Atlas Mason jars, or do you have to use the original lid? And if you do, then, how does that Compare when you can in it?
@useful.knowledge
@useful.knowledge 7 месяцев назад
Hi. The Atlas jars use a standard “regular” size mason jar lids and rings. Over the past few years, I been using mine for blueberry syrup. They work great. The only exception is the Classico pizza sauce which comes in a small jar. That jar is not compatible.

The original lid is still good to use for after you open the jar and put the remainder in the fridge. The Atlas jars that have the regular pasta sauces in them are a standard REGULAR MOUTH size and you can use any regular 2 piece lids with them. The smaller jars for the Alfredo sauce are NOT the standard size lids.
