My vote is switch out the scissors and put the crayons in the caddies. I also vote for just using a sharpie to write their names on their bags. Room looks great!

Write in Sharpie because they'll just pick at the paint. Also, I'd put the crayons in the caddies as you use them more often. Then pass out the scissors when and if you need them. Also, as a parent my child wouldn't be allowed to have their name on the outside of their backpack. It's actually suggested not to do that for safety purposes.

For safety reasons, name tags on backpacks isn’t advised by many agencies. Instead, you may consider assigning each student a number & use those on the backpack tags.

Keep it simple. Just write the names in black sharpie. They will pick off the paint most likely.

Labels: I would have names on a laminated cards and use a small zip tie to attach to one of the three metal rings (where it is made to click into a binder.) OR the Sharpie idea. :) Love your room and ideas. I'm sure your new school is so glad you are there now!

Write it in sharpie on the back of the pencil cases, they'll just pick the paint off. Also another suggestion for the pencil pouches; you could make small name tags, laminate them, hole punch them, and attach them with zip ties to either the zipper or one of the binder rings on the pencil pouches.

Please use a sharpie for the pencil pouches. Make things easier on yourself 🥰😍. We understand wanting to do more but students might peel the paint off too 🤪. You are awesome 😎.

Great video, Bridget! You gave me a lot of ideas that I want to try this year. I think you should label the pencil pouches with Sharpie marker. Maybe you could put the crayons in the small latch boxes from Dollar Tree and then place them into the pencil pouches. I am not sure if they will fit, though. Your room is looking amazing, but what I love the most is how you focus on instructional choices and relationship building as priorities and then design your classroom to meet those needs, rather than just design a beautiful room without the functional aspect. You are awesome, Bridget! Have a great week ahead!
@melissarenfro7879

I suggest putting the scissors and glue sticks together so you have room for the crayons. In terms of the pouches, you can first write in Sharpie and then puffy paint. This way if the paint disappears, their name is still on the pouch. Have a great year!

Hi! Donalyn Miller is the creator of the 40 book challenge! She just came out with a new book, The Joy of Reading. It is AWESOME. Something every teacher should read. I do a version of this challenge in the library (I'm a teacher-librarian). Instead of tags, I hand out mini badges (buttons) that students can collect on their backpacks. They LOVE badges. :)

Hi Bridget! I have loved your videos on starting fresh in a new District. You are doing an amazing job getting prepared. Your learning space looks so warm and inviting. Two suggestions: combine scissors and glue in one spot of the caddy, crayons in another. Try silver sharpie or gold sharpie highlighting (tracing) black sharpie for the names on the pencil pouches. Just a thought. Looking forward to your next video.

I printed their name on a business card size piece of cardstock and then just slid it into the pocket behind the mesh. We could see it and most of them lasted all year. If not, it is easy to print another card. I am reusing the canvas pencil pouches this year.

Buy school supply boxes or plastic shoe boxes and place the crayons in them. I have used them with my kinder, 2nd and 4th grade classes. Just dumped 5-6 boxes of crayons. Done. I usually place the crayons the first week of the second semester.

I don't have pouches. During registration we sent out supply letters to parents. I specifically asked for soft pencil pouches. I'm going to have a back up plan for ziplock bags if they don't bring any. I ran out of supply funds and I've spent so much of my money already. I'm really hoping parents bought the supplies listed for their child. 😱

Those are the pencil cases that my district gave us when we came back after qurantine. I I put their numbers on them in sharpie, and I use them still now. I put headphones in them tho, and I use plastic pencil boxes for supplies. i now use the extra pencil zip cases I collected for math centers. You are in 4th grade, and it is different. but I loop in 2nd and 3rd grade. I'm really big on guided discovery, and I only give them one supply at a time!! i cannot handle them all getting everything at once, it stresses me out, because they like....idk what is up with kids and supplies.

Labelling- I would write a number on the pack with sharpie and add a list on the wall with who was issued which pack number. Maybe add a blank column to write up something that goes missing or breaks for a quick reference.

Crayons: Here is a trick I picked up from another teacher. Place the crayons in one of those snap-lock snack containers. The cardboard box tends to break down with use and get destroyed. There is a size that is perfect for fitting an entire box of crayons. Markers: You mentioned that you do not tend to use markers as often. You also mentioned that you do a lot of work with dry erase boards. Maybe consider swapping out the markers with colored dry erase markers? Scissors: I have always been of the opinion that you only pass out scissors on days where they will actually be used. This is more of a personal choice, but it seems better to me to not have sharp objects sitting around where a student could grab it at any time.

I would suggest to combine the scissors and glue sticks and put the crayons out. While the puffy paint would be cute, sharpie will probably last longer or do a laminated name tag and attach with book ring or zip tie to one of the holes.
@janettolbert2204
@janettolbert2204 2 года назад
For the 40 book challenge...do you just go with the "honor system" that the student actually read the book? Or do students have some sort of reflection sheet about the books they read? I just wonder if some kids would just "say" they read a certain book, just to get the card or bead on their hook.

I have always written names with Sharpie on cloth pencil cases - doesn't come of, doesn't get picked off either. I never have crayons in my classroom, so I have no idea what I would do with that one. In fact, now that I think about it, I don't believe crayons are very popular in Australian schools at all, certainly not in the 3 schools where I've taught so far. Our library has them in the Maker Space, but none of us have them in our classrooms.

You can create a name tag. Laminate the student's name and punch a hole in it. Then attach it with strips to the pencil pouch. Then it will be easy just to cut the name off and use it for something else later (if the pouch is in good condition)

I would open and dump all of the colored pencils in each caddy. Otherwise you’re going to have kids constantly needing to sharpen their own colored pencils or be missing a specific color. I actually organize all my coloring supplies in big open bins, organized by color. That way kids can just grab the colors they need for an assignment instead of dealing with kids missing/breaking their individual supplies.
