ONE ERROR IN VIDEO! The word on the screen shows "Oxytocin" when it's supposed to say "Octinoxate". Sorry about that!! Octinoxate is an ingredient commonly found in foundations with SPF
Yes, Marlena, it would be very interesting if the hormone oxytocin was added to sunscreens! We'd all be, unfortunately, sunburned, but we would certainly feel 'warm', 'fuzzy', and ready to cuddle, LOL! Sherrey💕
I just saw another content creator do a video calling, "clean makeup" ....."planet friendly makeup" now. It is a collab with Sephora in Kohl's. I swear the industry is starting to see some push back on "clean makeup" and they are going to change the name to "planet friendly makeup" It makes me so angry!!
As someone with an autoimmune disorder I feel better staying away from endocrine disrupting ingredients. To each their own. You can make it a point that the whole makeup industry is a scam. Do women really need makeup to feel beautiful? Eh, not really necessary. Maybe there’s less waste without buying or making any makeup. Do what makes you feel comfortable. I feel way better staying away from harmful chemicals. I was wearing the most amount of makeup when I was diagnosed with a thyroid condition. Maybe other people aren’t affected. I don’t care. I care about my health above anything.
I totally agree. I was diagnosed with endometriosis back in 2019-2020 and I read a article stating that makeup is a contributor to the disease. Now when I look back I was a huge makeup wearer from high school coming down to recent ( I’m 34 now). I’ve been trying to find “organic” makeup but wasn’t able too so with that being said I think it’s best to just stay away from makeup altogether….
@@HomemakingwithAdHdsome good options are kosas, ilia, rms, fitglow, merit, Han skincare cosmetics, the website integrity botanicals is a great place to see other options, try some samples etc.
Marlena is the GOAT. The only person in the makeup industry that I trust. Her knowledge is vast and on point and she has consumers best interest at heart. ❤❤
I am grateful for clean beauty. It is an alternative for people like me, who have issues with poor methylation, detoxification and hormonal imbalances . You are right about the quantity, the problem is that these "regular" ingredients are not only in beauty but also in everything that put in our bodies. Making toxicity really high for people like me. Fortunately there are more studies from experts like Ronda Patrick and other doctors who take the time to investigate and public papers about this topic and educate people about parabens or any other type of endocrine disrupters. Clean beauty is more than a trend , it is an alternative for people with hormonal problems.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 YESSS!!! Moldy here, with EBV, Heavy Metals and Lyme due to poor detoxification in my phase 2 liver. WE ARENT LOOKING FOR CLEAN PRODUCTS FOR NO DAMN REASON. We give up a lot having these issues that I’m sorry but 99% of people with illness probably have but are misdiagnosed, but I digress 😂. Toxic load is a scientific cell bound reaction…this is why we need “clean” ingredients AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Wishing you better health!
It’s the accumulative effect that leads to hormonal and other issues. One day she will feel it. I’m on my way to use less of makeup and moving towards less toxic makeup. You don’t have to be a scientist, it’s easy to see that the longer the list the more ingredients a person will put on a skin. Toxic overload will cause inflammation and every illness is an inflammation.
I have a science degree & have worked in the natural products industry that also includes personal care. I work with chemists, scientists, formulators, R&D etc,. So I’ve known about this clean Beauty scam for years. I’ve have a 20 year career in this industry. You are right on about everything. I personally prefer parabens in my products! All the parabens used in our products are ok just as you said. It drives me NUTS all the fear mongering! I’m SO happy you made this video!! 👍🏼👏🏼 I’m not holding back but I never buy cosmetics made in China! Don’t trust them, know of too many horror stories.
Parabens are like aspartame. Totally not the devil they are made out to be by the alarmists who don't know how to critically evaluate and analyse research, but stick with any old clap trap that plays to their cognitive bias
The thing I heard about parabens was that it can act like estrogen. So women going through menopause shouldn’t use. I didn’t heard about the cancer rumor until later. I really do hate all the fear mongering. I just like truth and facts. I watch on Netflix about the makeup in China. From watching it what I got is they produce a lot of fake makeup products that are dangerous. They did say some factories follow guidelines but I still wonder. I would hope companies make sure their products are safe. Especially since could lead to lawsuits for them. Essence is one that switched to China for products. They use to be made in Europe. So I was surprised when I received a palette and it said made in China. Disappointing.
Totally agree! I'd be more worried about putting on products from China vs "non clean" versions. It's a whole pandora box I should talk about in a video too... So glad to hear your input thank you! xoxo
As a cancer survivor all I can say is thank god for advocacy groups like EWG, Think Dirty etc. and regulatory agencies like the FDA and the EU. The truth is the cosmetic industry is basically unregulated and since everyone has different needs and reactions it is truly a crap shoot everytime you put something on your skin. As for marketing ploys, this entire industry is marketing driven so why single out one niche segment?? I agree with you to educate yourself as best as possible and find companies and formulas that work best for you and roll the dice. Thanks for your videos.
I don't think I've ever learned about makeup in depth than I have watching this "series" you've been doing lately. Thank you so much, Marlena! You really are a powerhouse and super appreciated!!
They are incredibly helpful, aren’t they, and because we know Marlena’s background in the beauty world and her as a person as far as what she stands for, she is one of the very few you can trust when she tells you something.
Your own analogy proves the point you’re trying to argue against. One piece of cake will NOT necessarily harm you, but the issue is that we are putting on product after product [day after day] and are constantly exposed all day. Just like eating an abundance of unhealthy foods leads to metabolic disease… constant exposure to carcinogens and hormone disruptors is not good. The fact that we live in the most unhealthy developed country should tell you something.
Clean beauty having a limited shelf life ( as compared to other “ dirty” brands) is planned obsolescence, IMHO. If it goes bad quicker, you have to buy it more often = profits ( $$$ ) 😊
I've always wondered if this was behind the plan for some of these brands too. I'd be worried about them spoiling fast and me getting an infection though so is liability for the brand too. You never know these days with some shady brands!
@MarlenaStell I was using the Kosas foundation, and after 3 months, it started to irritate my skin. It took me a while to realize it because I kept blaming other products I wore it everyday because it was my favorite it was clean and didn't think it was the cause of my irritation and my skin was full of hives and very itchy. So I let my skin calm down and tried all the foundations I owned and nothing the last one was Kosas and my skin started to itch and breakout in hives.
Marlena, I'm an esthetician, thank you for making this video!! The clean beauty movement drives me crazy. I do my best to educate clients that things like this are marketing scams. Just like the claims of 'medical grade' or 'professional grade' skincare... It's all a marketing scam. I've been in debates with so many estheticians over clean beauty and all this other nonsense, and it makes our industry look so bad to have so many professionals buy into this crap. It is refreshing to see another professional speak up on this and tell it how it is based on science backed facts. The EWG is also funded by clean beauty marketed brands, they twist info to suit their narrative. It's terrible.
Shorter dates, poorer performance. I don't like it. Every clean beauty product I've tried has sucked. Dior RUINED their foundations and blushes by reformulating to 'clean'. Interestingly, there are a LOT of cosmetic ingredients that are banned in the EU vs USA. Even with this in mind (I am in the UK) the non-clean makeup for sale here is better than clean for sure
People don't realize even formulas w/ color m/u is hard to duplicate with "clean". How many people ❤ Kylie's old colors & formulas before it went vegan?
@@MarlenaStell There are formulas sold in Europe but made in China. Are they ok? Just got a makeup palette by Revolution Beauty - lovely but made in China. I'm kinda afraid to use it...
@@heyyayyo I wouldn't ask someone who proved the point she's trying to disprove. She said that small percentages of these chemicals are ok. But if they're in your shampoo, conditioner, cleanser, moisturizer, toothpaste, lotion, etc. Then you're getting way more than what is safe. It literally makes no sense what she said. If you layer on a bunch of chemicals then the amount of carcinogens rises.
Amen on the good parabens. I love my parabens! I’m in a group for making artists who want to include “clean” brands in our kits, one thing I have discovered is that I can not use many in my kit because they will spoil and put my kit at risk for contamination. So my advice is to beware of a makeup artist that claims all products in their kit are clean especially if they are charging you less than a $200 dollars for service. These “clean” brands are ultra expensive and you would have to buy them often in order to avoid spoilage.
You are so right! These "clean" products with no preservatives spoil so quickly. Take for example, cream blush or liquid blush.....it doesn't last long because the oils in it go rancid. I won't be buying these products anymore. It's just a waste of money. I can't use a blush up that quickly, especially when I have more than one, which most people do. It hurts when you have to throw it away.
Amen, sister. As an OG MUA, I’ve been rolling my eyes hard at this shiz for years now. Thank you for putting this out to the world. Actual clean products would have to be kept in the fridge and would be expired within 30 days or less. Also, formaldehyde used to be a very common ingredient in nail polish ♥️
I as a chemist (and having worked for covergirl and max factor) do feed into the concerns around Chemicals. My concerns stem from the Teflon/gortex and PBAs plastics manufacturing which many years later showed a cover up in data that these chemicals are toxic and the towns where they were made...the animals and people died from illness. The EU tries to take a non political stance on chemistry. However reading up on Parabens it appears they still could restrict /ban their use as research is still ongoing.
Marlena, I suffer from psoriasis and you’re 100% right. “Clean” products can flare up my psoriasis in one use compared to non “clean” products. It’s so weird and funky but thank you for bringing light to the issue. I love your videos and have for YEARS! Your transparency makes it easy to understand what you’re saying. I get flare ups with certain soaps that are marketed as clean and organic but it’s bs honestly. Not only preservatives but every ingredient can affect any given person.
It’s not just makeup that’s green washed watch out for detergent and other body and house hold products as well. Many of the top detergents have been banned in NY because of dangerous levels of 1,4 dioxane. I know because I had an awful reaction to the gain my friend used at her house. I feel like instead of the clean beauty or product gimmick unsafe levels of forever chemicals should just be banned from all products period. It’s not acceptable that major companies are poisoning consumers with toxic chemicals
Yes, I learnt about sodium laurel sulfate years ago... propylene glycol etc... these are more worrying but I think most companies are changing these now... Marlena is right about Talc
Thank you! I live in the EU (Vienna, Austria) and as a lot of youtubers are Americans I am amazed how the topic is discussed. Personally I can't use most of the "clean" make-up as there is a lot of coconut in it. My skin does not like it. And on top a lot of clean formulations are based on oils and the lasting power is not great. Therefore I use mostly "regular" brands. And yes, wash your face, use your makeup with clean hands and wash your brushes ... hygiene is the key!
I don’t use talc. My skin hates it. Dries my skin out and makes me break out. I don’t use chemical sunscreen either…..stings my eyes and my skin is sensitive to it. Everyone’s skin is different. I’d love a video on talc. Love this video! 💗
The older filters used in the US can sting the eyes - I can't use those near my eyes but I can use Asian Beauty sunscreens on my eyelids and not have to worry about stinging. Asia and Europe brands can use newer filters the US doesn't have.
Formaldehyde was in the Japanese hair straightening treatments. I, unfortunately, was one of those who had this treatment, and it caused extreme hair loss. Thankfully, I have a ton of hair as a Persian woman, so it wasn’t too detrimental to me.
It is so easy to get sucked in when someone starts yelling from the rooftops that something is dangerous. We are so fortunate to live in a time when researching is as easy as pulling up information on our phones. Back in the day (before pcs and cell phones etc.) it was so much more difficult to do thorough research without it taking days and many trips to a library. Thank you for doing the leg work for us and explaining the information in ways that make it easy for us to understand. ❤️
This was right on! I also wish someone would talk about expiration dates, makeup , especially powders, don't go bad in 6 months or a year like the package says. Those powders really don't harbor bacteria, there is nothing organic living in there. Texture and performance may change, color can fade, but your powders dont become dangerous! Such a waste, such a scam, companies just trying to sell you more more more.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! one of the hardest parts of my job as a beauty content creator and licensed esthetician is dealing w the misinformation and straight up lies that my clients unknowingly subscribe to. even if they get their information from random ppl on tiktok, my expertise and knowledge is second guessed when i try to help them debunk misconceptions. i see how much my clients stress out over whether or not their cosmetics are “toxic” or “clean” when in reality, life is not so black and white, and anybody who isn’t a chemist or formulator or toxicologist cannot truly understand how these chemical compounds affect us when they’re in a cosmetic formulation. there’s sooo much bad information out there that outweighs the facts so thank u for using ur platform to speak on this!
I have seen Formaldehyde in eyelash glue in case anyone is on the lookout for it.Thank you for the research Marlena. I just saw you on Netflix yesterday in Broken ironically. Good watch.
Why aren’t there more RU-vidrs like you?? I felt like I was was in a class that I enjoy being in. You did an excellent job on this video to bring more awareness in makeup ❤
EWG is ridiculous... I remember in the 70s it was global cooling... then in 80s and 90s it was the ozone being depleted and now it's global heating... yet absolutely nothing has changed 😕
Formaldehyde was in nail polish. It's one of the ingredients that causes yellowing of the nails. Thank you for this hot take! I love learning about the science of ingredients, what's the tea, what's marketing, what's important, what to look for. Everyone wants to make the best choices for themselves and obviously brands are all vying for consumers.. and the clean beauty movement does get people talking about the issues and what's really better. Everyone is different. You could be sensitive/allergic to ingredients and yes the fear is high these days because of the overwhelming toxicity in our environment. So it does matter.
First and foremost Marlena - it's so so good to see you back! I have been watching you since day 1. You are so correct about 'clean beauty'. I have never been about the hype, but rather the ingredients. I trust your vast knowledge and experience , delivered with enthusiasm, passion and for the love of your loyal audience! Marlena, you have so much class and certain people may feel threatened - which is the ultimate compliment. My wish for you is that you propel your career forward and whatever you create, you will be a star! I love seeing you back with such purpose and class! Much Love from Canada! 💙💗
As far as formaldehyde, I have never heard of cosmetics containing it, BUT when the keratin hair treatment craze first started, I went and had it done bc I have curly frizzy hair and I absolutely LOVED the results even tho it took 3 hrs and cost $300…when it wore off I went back to have it done again and was told the brand they had used prior on my hair was now banned and they weren’t allowed to use it bc the formula contained formaldehyde. So I hope that helps explain where that ingredient was used in “beauty” products!! Love you so much and love this video! It’s so incredibly informative! Xoxo
I love your eye look! I fell for the clean beauty scam back in the 90s through the mid 2000s. I ended up with allergic reactions, and damaged hair. I’m so over “clean beauty”😞
You can see the importance of parabens when you become immunosuppressed. I have MS and I'm on DMT - Tysabri. Every "clean beauty" product I've owned I threw away because it was making me sick as now I'm prone to opportunistic infections that may not affect an average person but in my case, oh boy....
Thank you so much for covering this Marlena. The EWG is a freakin' mafia. Dior went "clean" recently and completely screwed up their eye shadow formula which is so, so sad, and clearly just for a marketing ploy.
formaldehyde was in every single lash glue & in some shampoos till people started reporting problems with it, like I did. My lashes fell out & my eyes were horribly itchy and burned and swelled up. I used a couple shampoos , one of them being WEN which i had hair loss whenever I used it so I threw it out. I found later that there was some lawsuits against WEN from women who LOST THEIR HAIR FROM THE FORMALDEHYDE. My lashes never grew back So THANK GOD they make formaldehyde & latex free lash glue now & WEN took it out of their products tho I didn't ever use them again. I am glad they cleaned up those products & offered options without the substance. I was happy to find I wasnt' the only one who had horrible experience with them. I heard that parabens were somehow connected to breast cancer but I never knew much about it. Thanks for the lists of where we can look up things ourselves. We do have to check things for ourselves & not just follow any gossip or misrepresented information ourselves so we know what the real facts are.
Everyone's bacteria is different. You have to keep trying until you find one that works natural or not natural. And even if you find an antiperspirant or deodorant that works, over time it will stop working, that's why you have to switch it out. Aluminum has known toxicity. So compounded use of antiperspirants can cause issues over time.
Such a good balanced video! I avoid talc because if it's in powders it gets in my eyes and they itch, run and puff up like crazy. That's an allergy not an opinion. Lol. I don't worry about it in creams because it doesn't float in the air and get in my eyes. Having said that though, I do buy European cosmetics most of the time. I would like to keep the money here, but I like the tighter regulations over there. I always appreciate your info and insight. Thanks for educating us. 😊
I agree with you Marlena! I have always been skeptical of “clean” makeup and to your comments about parabens, I always felt like clean makeup was likely quicker to expire because it’s so “clean”. I just buy what I like, but recently I’ve been questioning the use of talc. I also can’t use that ingredient in the sunscreen. I get terrible allergic reactions and can only use mineral sunscreens. Thank you for a very informative video! ❤
Thank you for your transparency...I'm so late to your new videos - I'm binging them to catch up...I know it's not your new focus but I'd love a tutorial on this eye look!
The first time I encountered fear mongering with personal products was when I went to an Arbonne presentation back in the mid 90’s. A friend invited me, and I had no clue what it was about and there’d be snacks, so sure, I went. Their whole presentation about their personal products was bashing all the other products as dangerous and carcinogenic. I instantly thought “OK so if all makeup, personal care, skincare causes cancer then people in entertainment - singers, actors, Vegas show girls, you name it - would be dropping like flies way younger than everybody else.” It instantly turned me off. And to this day when a friend brags about how amazing Beauty Counter is I think “Yup, the ‘consultant’ you bought it from loves you, and the 3 times more you paid for that than you really needed to.”
@guitargirl9714 I forgot about Arbonne. I got caught up in their advertising and purchased the whole line of skincare and makeup. Most of it I liked but boy it wasn't cheap. Then once they "improved" it I stopped using it since it wasn't as good and caused my skin to break out. Never understood why companies improve something that works well already. Its always a warning to me to switch brands ASAP!
Unfortunately, most consumers tend to be gullible because of ignorance and the cosmetic industry knows this and takes advantage of that fact. We tend to trust they have our best interest at heart when really they just have their pocketbooks as priority. No company is looking out for me so I have to look out for myself. It's people like you that help us break down all the jargon that most of us just don't understand. thank you for that.
Thanks for breaking that down. I have been going back and forth on the whole “clean” thing for a while. As a makeup artist I want to buy products that are least likely to cause problems with clients but that also last. There’s so much to consider that it overwhelms me a little. Performance, safety, shelf life…. 🤯 maybe you could do a video on ingredients that may be causing issues? For example, I find it hard to be able to figure out which ingredient might be causing my breakouts because there are so many ingredients and the names sometimes differ.
I can definitely do a video on most common irritators! Most of the ones I hear from people are: octinoxate, bismuth oxychloride (in mineral makeup), talc, red dyes, and dimethicone. It's hard because each person is different so might be worth asking the clients if they know what breaks them out to try to narrow down. It's VERY tricky :(
Marlena....since it's the IDGAF era...tell us who to stay away from!!!!! I appreciate you giving us this info. I always thought "clean" was a scam!!!!! 😺 Kim
Marlena, I have been using Natasha Denona for the past year-her formulas are outstanding and talc mined from Italy… they are pricey but at this time I would say “pricey but worth it”… I started with just the Glam palette and because influencers were stating how great Lorac formulas were prior to a 28 days of beauty with Ulta, I went all in on their recommendations and bought 3 Lorac palettes -when they arrived I realized why they were on sale-all 3, the Noir, the Soleil and the Enchanted Forest were “Made in China”…. I spent $60 on these and trusted some of the channels I follow. I’d love to hear a video from you on this! Those palettes I will not use-too bad for the waste of money but I’ll stick to Natasha Denona or insist on reading the label before purchase!
Made in Italy does not necessarily mean that all ingredients are sourced from Italy. They may still use talk and other ingredients from suppliers all around the world. Unfortunately there's no way for consumer to check that.
#justiceforparabens! I will buy cruelty free and vegan makeup (not exclusively but most of my favorite indie brands are both of these things) but clean beauty is an instant turn off. It feels so fear mongery. Plus I have too big of a collection and like to rotate through products so I prefer to know my makeup will last a while after the expiry! Now I would never apply makeup that’s past it’s date to anyone else but in my personal collection, I want all the parabens to keep my products around long enough to make a dent in them, which is usually past the tested expiry date on the packaging for me lol. If anything smells weird or whatever, I’m tossing it but I have never actually had that issue. Wax bloom on lipsticks, yes, but never mold or anything like that. I really wanted to try the Kosas bronzer and powder but I heard they get moldy before a year is up, and that’s such a shame for powder products which aren’t even supposed to harbor any bacteria. Ugh, not a fan of the clean beauty thing. Especially since all these brands have different versions of what that even means! Thank you for sharing your insight and expertise on this because I strongly believe more people need to be aware. You’re the best, Marlena! ❤
I so appreciate this video! The wave of clean Beauty made it feel like it was a moral imperative. I used to obsessively check the EWG site and was so shocked I stopped wearing makeup. What freeing information this is! THANK YOU!!!!!
As someone who is severely allergic to methylisothiazolinone, I can appreciate some aspects of the “clean beauty” label at Sephora. I agree, though, that this movement needs to come with a lot more education and a lot less trendiness.
Instead of blacklisting ingredients that many people find helpful, but many are allergic to, we should EDUCATE people. We do it in so many other areas. Peanuts kill some people, but I can still buy peanut butter crackers to eat at home. Roller coasters make some people throw up, but people who love them can still ride them. But a few cosmetic ingredients give some people allergic reactions and they are banned. What a strange way to react. LABEL products and educate people. I’m a grown up. With the right education my doctor and I can figure out if I’m allergic to parabens. I AM allergic to aloe, but I don’t throw a fit that aloe is still in products. How on earth did some of these ingredients get such a bad name?
But the example that you gave qith the palette made in China which did not match the ingredient list can happen anywhere. I am in France and nobody is checking if the ingredients listed in the packaging matches what's truly in the product. The only thing we can do is that the brand is honest and/ or does her due diligence. That's what happens in Korea with the sunscreen debacle. The manifactured industry said the sunscreen was SPF50 but brands did not check if that was true. The truth only came out because an independent entity chose to verify if that information was true or not and it was not
Formaldehyde is used in some nail polishes. The absorption of talc is the issue because of cancer and granulomas diseases. Of course absorption on one’s face is probably negligent. I do agree re. advertising! My concern now is sustainability. Micro plastics are especially toxic to our ecosystem. Packaging choice is obvious. The mining of mica is questionable. Thanks for this balanced video. ❤
One thing to point out on oxybenzone and octinoxate is they are found to be harmful to coral reefs. That is why I tend to avoid those and use reef friendly sunscreen ingredients. 💙
yes, this! what people often forget when criticizing "clean" beauty is that some people care about the environmental effects of their products as well as the effects on them personally.
You gotta remember that when they tested these ingredients on reefs, they put stupid amount of sunscreen directly at them. The ocean is massive. The sunscreen would get diluted before it even touches the reefs
Coral reef experts don't agree with this - they say climate change is the biggest factor. It's really important IMO to push back against this because it's being used to ban chemical sunscreen in the US - which is really dangerous and can cause skin cancer rates to go up. Chemical sunscreens protect better than mineral.
Marlena, thank you a hundred million times! Byrdie is one of my fav sites when I'm looking at an unfamiliar product. I definitely have the links above saved for the other sites. I worked in the legal industry for 15 years and believe you me, the majority of our cases were Asbestos lawsuits. Talc has been on the toxic radar for quite some time. I even remember when I was kid there was talk about Toxic Talc and I just turned 55 today. Marketing drives every industry we buy from so getting past the BS dog and pony show can be hard especially when you're dazzled by the shiny colors or claims that something works 1000%. My red flags go off immediately. You are a gem for decoding the myths about beauty. 🙏💗
Love this video ! so many people want to go “clean” and go home to throw out all their hard earn money aka products thinking everything is so harmful. I thank you for taking the time to research and educate. Xo
Most of the clean beauty products I have used end up in the garbage. They do not perform as well or look like they get old too soon. I do not get the use I want compared to products with preservatives.
Yes please do a separate video on talc! I’m so curious about it considering your knowledge. Love your videos because they give us so much knowledge and insight!
Actually formaldehyde has been commonly found in keratin treatment for hair. I’ve been using them for years, but these days they are being formulated with alternative ingredients that when exposed to heat still release formaldehyde! It’s crazy how companies just found a loop hole just to be able to label their products “formaldehyde free”. 😤
Thank you for this!💖 I think a lot of companies are phasing out talc from their products because it seems easier to find talc-free formulations these days.🥳
The only problem for me when I heard talking about clean beauty in the cosmetic industry by people who want to explain clean's beauty is "scam", it's that the environnement issues are not counted (and the safety of workers for making certain ingredients). This aspect is important to understand why sometimes certain ingredients can be "banned" by some people or brand, or controversial. I'll hope I'm making sense because I'm french.
Very true! There's very much environmental factors that brands needs to focus on, but sadly the "clean" beauty label rarely is about that. It should be top priority though- totally agree
Super nice video dispelling some of the clean beauty myths! I've only seen one product containing formaldehyde, which is the Herome Extra Strong Nail Hardener: Butylacetate, Ethylacetate, Nitrocellulose, Acetyl Tributyl Citrate, Propylparaben, Aqua, Isobutyl Acetate, Undecylenoyl PEG5 Paraben, Formaldehyde, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Methanol, Benzophenone1, Titaniumdioxide, Citral, Citric Acid, Acetyl Methionine, NAcetylL Cysteine.
Thank You very much for this video! I also have appreciated reading books & product reviews by Paula Begoun of Paula's Choice & Beautypedia & purchased & use some Paula's Choice skincare products as well. I read that Paula Begoun retired & Paula's Choice is currently owned by other people, & the product line is still excellent, even though Paula Begoun is retired, & I think the same thing goes for the Beautypedia product review site as well. I would love to know that these excellent things were still progressing along & moving forward because I really appreciated having these goods & services available.
I agree with your thoughts on clean beauty. Wasn’t formaldehyde used in nail polish years ago? I know there was a push for formaldehyde free polish and now none of them have it. Unless that was a scam too! Thanks for this❤️
As someone who has a lot of skin allergies, I appreciate this video! I think that if someone doesn't have any issues, then most of the ingredients that are said to be "bad" are more than likely safe for the average consumer. I actually am allergic to formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing ingredients, so I am always checking ingredient lists. The only product I have ever found to have straight up formaldehyde in it was the duo eyelash glue. Outside of that, I haven't ever seen formaldehyde, but I have seen a lot of formaldehyde-releasing ingredients in products, like Quaterniun-15 and diazolidinyl urea. Since the clean-beauty movement has started, I have noticed that these ingredients are used less and less, which I do personally love. I think it all just comes down to what your body can tolerate. We need less fear mongering and more facts! =)
Loved loved this video!!! Thank you for creating such amazing content ❤. Do you think you’ll be doing a bridal makeup video? That would be fantastic ☺️. I’m part of a wedding party, and am going to try to help some of the bridesmaids get ready. I know a bit about makeup, but any tips or tricks would be great. Especially for longevity, oil separation on oily skin and trouble with smile line creasing when wearing makeup.
Thank you thank you thank you!! Drives me crazy when people say " there's parabens!!", I'm like yeah, it's preservatives. Angie, always says the same thing!! 💜
Hi Marlene. I liked so much you have addressed this topic. I would like to know what are your favorite talc-free brands. I also avoid talcum powder (many doctors in my country claim that the tolerance level for a certain substance is individual for each one. Therefore, something that will not harm the vast majority of the population, can pick up some percent. And I don't want to be between these). I can't use Carmine either. The national beauty market in my country is the third in the world. Most brands are cruelty free and do not use carmine. I still don't understand why this is common in the United States (several European brands no longer use it). I would like to try to understand why this is so prevalent in the United States. Maybe you know why. Anyway, congrats on the video!
I can't use products with Octinoxate in it. It breaks me out. I can only use mineral sunscreens. Talc I have mixed feelings about. It seems so many products do come from China. I rather products come from a place with better regulations.
Marlena-I have followed you for many years, still using MUG shadows today. This information is so valuable-thanks so much for sharing! Excited for your new venture!
Marlena girl THANK YOU 😮😊 cuz let me tell u how I panicked one day and threw ALL of my makeup in the trash thinking I was putting some “toxic it’s gonna kill me” shit on my face Girl you made every bit of sense, and for a long time I haven’t been buying makeup because of these stories about it’s toxic and dangerous, I’m so glad I ran into this video today, gonna get back to buying all the makeup I want with no worries THANK YOU ❤😊
I got interested in clean beauty when I needed products for my child’s bad eczema and started making my own products. Of course I found a lot of fear mongering about parabens. I later got a job in a lab formulating products and one of the first things I asked cosmetic chemists was about parabens. They also all rolled their eyes and explained to me about the parabens fear mongering scam.
Great video. I admit I have got sucked into the clean beauty lies. I spent way too much on Josie Maran and Osea. Saw no change in my skin. It made my skin feel soft but nothing else.
I'm playing better safe than sorry. Same thing with food additives. It might be small but these things accumulate in the body. Is there some fear mongering yes. Nothing wrong with people wanting to have less ingredients or take less risk. They also said DDT was safe. They also said oxy wasnt additive etc. It takes years for science to catch up when it comes to safety. I do think stress isnt good either so there is a balance. I actually dont buy from these new "clean' brands. There have been small companies doing this way before it was trendy.
Same. My concern is forever chemicals and endocrine disrupting chemicals. I’ve used clean beauty for years and never once had a mold problem or anything like that
The problem is the alternatives tagged as "clean" are not safe at all. They're mostly ineffective and not adequately tested. So in thinking that you're minimizing your risk, you are actually opening yourself up to much more serious problems.
Gen X here… I remember the whole formaldehyde thing. I believe quite a few products used it as a preservative for water-containing products. I remember hearing about that when I was a kid. I had no clue at the time what formaldehyde was, but it’s a hard word to forget and fun to say-so it was once a common preservative in liquid cosmetic products (creams and lotions, and some cheaper foundations) bc it’s so cheap and a hard-core anti-microbial. It’s still a component in cigarettes and even in some cheap beers, so it’s probably more common than most realize,
I have always thought this was a scam as a matter of fact anything that's says clean like shampoo for instance I don't think it works as well, but yes I've always thought that thank you honey for finally pointing it out!!!!
Thank you! I worked as a beauty advisor at sephora and this was so frustrating. The only things you need to not use are what you have ethical objections or allergies to! Same as the clean eating movement!
