The chain on any MTB has to put up with a lot of stresses, on an E MTB those stresses are increased due to the amount of power and torque an electric motor can deliver, even at very low speed. So caring for this component on your E bike is very important, luckily it’s also very simple, as Steve explains.

Maintaining the chain and sprockets on your E bike, is as simple as giving them a good clean and doing so regularly. Find out Steve’s method aswell as a few little tricks that can make things much easier, specifically involving a good quality stick. 🤔

A stick! _A STICK!_ That was the secret sauce that I have been wondering about how to solve my much needed (and wanted) cleaning!

Always teaching me important new things about taking care of my new Ebike. Using a stick in order to move the chain backwards for maintenance was a real "a ha" tip for me, thanks for all your great videos!

Thanks so much for all your videos, truly the are appreciated. Just today I picked up a Cube Stereo 160 SL Hybrid 2019 and wow, I absolutely love it. I come from a MX, Ensuring and big road bike back ground, so I'm used to fast speeds etc, but nothing puts a smile on my face like blasting through a trail on an ebike 🙏

Recently converted to an e-mtb - and not paid a great deal of attention to lube - conditions here in the UK have been dry lately. However the bike recently started making a mechanical grinding sound, I took it bike to the shop fearing it was a motor issue, turns out it was a lack of lube - on previous bikes I used to spray the odd bit of GT85 on - now the shop showed me pretty much the same as your video - how to clean and lube it properly - lube is important folks - don't ignore it !

Thanks Steve, good video. I love the tip with the stick . . . I ended up buying a bike repair stand so I could do work on the bike easier . . . but the stick idea would have saved me some money :)

GT85 every ride no messing about cleaning anymore, been using it for years and it’s a game changer shifts are silky smooth and your drivetrain last longer because it doesn’t attract dirt
@alasdairhill5166
@alasdairhill5166 6 лет назад
Team crap sheep Hiya be careful with with GT 85 around the motor and bearings as I did the same on a Haibike with a Bosch motor. The motor went at 497 miles and rear wheel bearings at 1000 miles.I suspect as the GT 85 is so thin it washed the bearings out. I now oil the chain and just put GT 85 on a cloth and wipe the chain with it
@RickyG225
@RickyG225 4 года назад
I also used this hack when spinning in a backward motion using a re-usable zip tie that attaches to the Crankarm and Chainring which works fine. My concern is spinning the internal gears of the motor backwards. I have asked techs about this and they did not seem too keen on the idea of doing this to the motor. Can any damage occur to the motor if this is done on a regular basis? Anyone?

While using the degreaser on the chain just protect the disc rotor with a dry rag, just in case: put in between the spokes so no drop can accidentally reach the rotor ;-)

Good post. I like to run the dripping fresh chain through the cassette then wipe.
@cartheym
@cartheym 6 лет назад
Not sure if that's the best idea Nyles. The whole idea of lubing the chain is to lubricate the moving parts of the chain (i.e. between the plates & pins), any extra lube through the drivetrain will only serve to attract and trap dirt, grit & other unwanted muck which will unlimately increase the wear and tear on not just the chain, but the more expensive bits like your cassette & chainring too.
@nyleshintz69

How can I run the chain in reverse on a 16t, front Sprocket no place to put a stick in? I have a hiabike 4.0 2018 model. I don't have a bike stand so can't run the chain with the pedals

I run a 18 turbo levo expert today I used the Allen key method to be able to pedal backwards. I noticed some resistance from the motor when pedalling backwards (battery out at the time). Are you sure this won’t damage the motor in the long term? Great channel by the way

@racepnd
@racepnd 4 года назад
Bob A I don’t clean the chain on the bike anymore the degreaser collects in the well behind the drive sprocket and runs down to the outer motor bearing. I had to have the motor replaced at 2000kms as this bearing had corroded and failed. Clean the chain off the bike guys not worth the chance.
@RickyG225
@RickyG225 4 года назад
@@racepnd WTH! This is something that I have not thought of. I use the Finish Line Chain Cleaning system with degreaser and water mixture. Sounds like it would be difficult to flush out once it makes it down into the bearing section. Good points. Lately I have been using a bit of WD-40 on a rag while gripping the chain and spinning forward. Not a big fan of the backward motion being used here. Thanks bro!

@alasdairhill5166
@alasdairhill5166 6 лет назад
Martyn Frith Hiya I run a Haibike 6.0 and run it on a kmc 10 e chain and always run them to the .75 with no problems however at best I get 430 miles per chain .Which I do in a month. You might get more as yours is a brose motor with the big chain ring and mine is Bosch with a 16 tooth front sprocket.I hope that helps

Put a stick in the chainring, follow the same old procedure of every other chain clean/lube video from GCN/GMBN/Bike Radar/etc. Leave the stick in place, just like Steve did, it's of utmost importance to not remove it once you're done.
@embn
@embn 6 лет назад
Hi Alex Paulsen, it's still a bike after all! And by no means should you keep that stick in there (though you knew that all along, didn't you?) A little hack to make life easier, that little stick is. Be sure to use the same one every time.
@Metal-Possum
@Metal-Possum 6 лет назад
It is a very useful hack to be fair, lubing my mid drive is considerably less convenient than on any other bike I own. Maybe a cable tie could improve the set-up, and will probably be sacrificial if you did forget to remove it afterwards. I'm glad you picked up on my sarcasm.

Can you use dish soup or a car soup for washing your Mtb.
@cartheym
@cartheym 6 лет назад
Ralph Moens dish soap is good & a cheap alternative to bike specific washes. Some car detergents are fine too but watch out as some have dirt emulsifiers which can get into places you don't want (such as bearings) and strip away grease from places where you want it to stay put.

The whole "apply it on the inside" thing is not true. You're not applying it to lubricate the exterior of the chain where it touches the cassette, rings and jockey wheels. You are applying it to lubricate just the rollers. Put it on either side. Makes no difference.

Can some one answer why motorbike chains can least 500+ miles without cleaning but e bikes and conventional mtbs require cleaning almost after every ride. Are the lubes they are selling for them rubbish ? Any ideas how to make chain stay cleaner for longer I have hurt some people do some some sort of staff with paraffin!?
@embn
@embn Год назад
It may be a combination of scale, (smaller size, less strength/reliability) and mechanism (motorbike chains go around 1 sprocket each end so have very little side-load, all the shifting for instance is done inside the gearbox, not by moving the chain over a cassette). Essentially, car wheel bearings last way longer than bike wheel bearings, scale things down and they need replacing more often
