Dirt on vinyl records can damage not only the vinyl, but also your needle. In this tutorial, I demonstrate step-by-step how to use the Spin-Clean Record Washer MK II 40th Anniversary Edition, and provide tips on how to air dry while minimizing dust using a dish rack and box fan with air conditioner filter.
I also include two needle drops, one with a dirty record, and the other with the same track after the record has been cleaned, and demonstrate a procedure for pre-rinsing extremely dirty records prior to using the Spin Clean.

Thanks for the video! I love the fan/filter idea. I've found the Vinyl Styl to be a better unit over the Spin clean. My reasons for this are; 1. It has a label protector as part of its operation. 2. The label protector also has thumb holes to allow spinning without touching the record. 3. It has a drying rack that holds 7 or 8 albums built into the base of the unit. I use mine in conjunction with the Vinyl Vac and clean enough records to fill the drying rack before I replace the my homemade cleaning solution (15oz Distilled water, 1oz of 99% pure alcohol and appx 10 drops of fotoflo using a syringe or less until I see the cleaning solution start sheeting over my test album) I then empty the drying rack by playing the LPs and Then putting them into new inner sleeves. My goal is to find 2 more basin cleaners to use as rinses, but i think that will be just a luck find someday at the thrift stores.

I have a Knosti Antistat cleaner and that Spin Clean looks a pain in the arse to rotate!
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 5 лет назад
The design of the Knosti is interesting, spinning from the center of the record. How much work is installation and removal of the spindle each time you clean a record? With the Spin Clean, there is some resistance spinning a record through it, but this resistance is from the brushes, not the rollers, and I like the fact that the brushes are really getting into those grooves and cleaning out the gunk!

@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 4 года назад
No, those 3 caps can be used to clean multiple records. How many depends on how dirty they are. Periodically check the clarity of the water in your basin. As soon as you see hints of "cloudiness", it's time to start fresh.

Can I use warm tap water to clean the brushes, etc. after I clean my records with distilled water?
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 5 лет назад
I've run the brushes under warm tap water, and run my fingers across the bristles to rinse off residue picked up from the vinyl. The most important thing is to let them dry between uses. Leaving them in a basin will mess up the glue that attaches the bristles to the pads.

@rossross9281
@rossross9281 4 года назад
How many records can you clean before having to change the solution?
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 4 года назад
It really depends on how dirty they are, so I base it on the clarity of the water in the basin. The solution is supposed to "encapsulate" dirt and make it fall to the bottom of the basin, but it can only encapsulate so much... Once the water in the basin is no longer clear, then this device could potentially make your records dirtier.
@mranalogman3525
@mranalogman3525 4 года назад
The Studebaker record cleaner looks identical to the Spin Clean but it does not have a fill line. In fact, the directions do not mention anything about filling the base with water. It comes with a bottle of cleaner and you put 4-8 drops on each pad, then run the record through 3 times in each direction. Remove the record and wipe off whatever fluid remains. Essentially, it is the same unit but a different process. However, I see no reason why you could not use the Spin Cleaner process with the Spin Cleaner fluid/distilled water. You just need to figure out how high to fill the base since there is no fill line. So if you are considering the Studebaker since it is cheaper, know this ahead of time. If you choose to buy the Spin Cleaner fluid and distilled water to use in the Studebaker, in the long run, is it really any cheaper? (I didn't work the numbers out to tell.) And the top to cover it up is a very thin clear plastic cover such as you might find on a gift box. I don't expect it to last long at all. Its basically a dust cover. The base is also black, which would make seeing the dirty fluid even harder. BTW: Good review, thanks for that!

Would you recommend giving every vinyl an extra cleaning with a record solution and a brush or would it be just and overkill?
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 3 года назад
I think the Spin Clean does a fine job by itself. However, when it comes to vinyl, there are as many opinions as their are enthusiasts. So if it gives you piece of mind to take an extra step, go right ahead!

Have to found that the enclosed solution creates more noise? I've heard many people just use the spin clean with water only.
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 5 лет назад
I have not experienced surface noise created by the small amount of fluid used in this device. The fluid "encapsulates" the dirt (their word, not mine) and makes it fall to the bottom of the basin, so if I used the Spin Clean without this fluid, I would probably change the water more frequently so the dirt doesn't end up back on the record.

YEP... I have had the same issue. I followed the instructions and I even did a distilled water rinse after.... and the old records that had snaps and pops got worse... and a couple of new ones that a a few snaps and pops.. they got worse and I had NEW snaps and pops. Again... I followed the instructions 100%. Let the record dry at least an hour before putting them away.

@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 3 года назад
Spin Clean calls the brushes. spinclean.com/store/Spin-Clean%C2%AE-MKII-Replacement-Brushes-p14190725 The "pads" as you call them are made up of many tiny bristles, so they are short stranded brushes, not long stranded brushes like the anti-static variety.
@nanchanger
@nanchanger 3 года назад
@@ThriftyAV no way anyone could look at them and believe the feltlike material is a "brush", but I suppose it's semantics...
@jonnoyes6082

That may be how Spin Clean says to clean a record, but it's a bad technique that is missing a crucial step. If you use the cloth to wipe off the contaminated liquid the cloth will get more and more contaminated as you clean additional records. You will then spread that contamination on to other records. Also, when you use the cloth it will not remove all of the contaminated liquid from the grooves. Get some distilled water and a bottle to place it in the has a nozzle, so that when you squeeze the bottle a stream of distilled water is emitted. These bottles are cheap and available on line. They are used in chemistry labs for rinsing glassware. After cleaning in the Spin Clean, rinse the record throughly with the distilled water before you use the cloth to dry it. This way you do not contaminate the cloth and spread that contimination from record to record. If a record is especially dirty, I will clean it with soap ( I recommend using Dawn) and water before using the spin clean. Again, after this first cleaning, rinse with tap water and then distilled water before using the Spin Clean. This is the proper way to clean a record using a Spin Clean. It's just common sense to not spread the contaminated liquid onto the cloth and then to additional reocrds. I'm surprised that Spin Clean doesn't understand how to do this the right way!

@aw1889

This doesn't tell me anything. Even after cleaning, how can anyone tell if the spin clean didn't clean the record good enough to eliminate that surface noise? The record itself needed a cleaning and a clip of how it sounded and then another cleaning with the spin clean followed by another clip of the record playing. The saturation of soil on the record doesn't do anything but lie to the viewer. Of course it's going to sound really bad, but who's ever going to play a record in that condition? They would at the very least run it under the sink and dry it first. This literally tells us nothing.
