Reminds me of my own apartment, minus the maggots. I fell into a pretty deep depression and couldn’t keep up anymore, trash just piled up. Finally worked up the courage to call my dad and we worked through it together, now I’m staying on top of things and feeling good. Remember guys, if you struggle with hoarding, please, I urge you to reach out to family, even if it’s embarrassing, they love you and want to help.

My dad was a hoarder, and I'm starting to believe Im going the same way. I lived with my mother most of my life, she has Alzheimers and she's been in a home for almost 3 months now, and she's doing great! Four months ago, I had this same issue: the kitchen was a mess, some maggots here and there (dead and alive)... I paid like $500 to a friend to have the whole house cleaned. It was sparkling like till a month ago, when it started all over again. I have depression. I feel exhausted and anxious. I do visit both psychiatrist and therapist. I exercise regularly (some aerobics at 4:30 am before going to work) but I also have ADHD. I recently asked my sisters, one of them is right now in my house helping me. It's so overwhelming and I'm so scared of keep having this lifestyle. Wish me luck. 😢

@@Gisellenid That’s an interesting coincidence, I have ADHD too! I know it can be super tough to get the motivation to clean, especially once it’s built up, but the best thing you can do is build up a habit of putting things right in the garbage as you make it. Use a big garbage can so you don’t feel demotivated by having to take out the trash so often. You can do it.

@@Gisellenid Some of the drugs that you take may actually be causing your exhaustion. If you can afford it, find a good chiropractor or naturopath who can give you a blood test, or some other kind of test, to find out where you are nutritionally deficient. There are alternative treatments for ADHD besides drugs that do seem to work for some people. In the meantime try to keep on top of things as much as you can. Get help to start, maybe ask someone to come in and help you out once every couple weeks. Perhaps look into changing your diet, e.g. a high sugar diet depletes your body of calcium and magnesium, which can cause exhaustion. Or maybe the exhaustion is caused by something entirely different. I'll pray for you. I know how it feels to want to do nothing at all.

I am from Iran and we celebrate beginning of spring every year and we call it Nourooz. Part of tradition is cleaning every corner of the house before new year. When I say every corner means nothing should be left unclean. Everything should be clean including everything in cabinets or closet. When I was a kid I hated it because my mom forced me to do some chores but now I really really appreciate it. I’m a house cleaner, and I once had to clean a bathroom that hadn’t seen a scrub, let alone proper sanitization, in over 30 years. It was a five hour clean for this one bathroom. I scrubbed every inch of the place. When I showed him the results, the client was elated because he could finally slide his shower door completely closed because I’d cleared the track out. What you did for this woman is genuinely life-changing. I hope this was the start of a healing journey for her.

I used to empty out foreclosed properties for a living, spent several years working in properties that had large amounts of mold, rotting garbage, maggots, roaches, fleas, vermin and their various forms of excrement (you should see the fridges/freezers that I've cleaned!). While none of your video content surprises me, I cannot stress how much health danger you and the house occupant are in just by being in the house without PPE, particularly a good respirator (not a cloth mask but a full respirator), even just picking up trash as you are in the start of the video. I used to make myself very sick by ignoring PPE for jobs like this. You really should be wearing a respirator, eye protection, skin protection (gloves), and a disposable or changeable garment/coveralls the minute you step foot in the property. Please don't misunderstand, I love the heart that you bring to this, and your attention to detail is superb! I just have concerns that you are going to cause yourself preventable health issues as I used to do.

I clean when I can, but just doing the dishes is sometimes a red letter day. I see the mess that keeps trying to grow, and just looking at it saps my strength to do anything about it most of the time. And I know what she meant. It's okay. You aren't just being lazy. Pick up 10 pieces of dirty laundry, and journal. Later on, do a little more. If you have enough dirty laundry, do a load or two if you can. Sweep the kitchen floor, maybe. Pick up papers and trash, if you can. I use small garbage bags. Each one I fill and toss is a triumph. Tina, Al's wife

I have never let my house get this bad to the point of maggots. I used to be able to keep up on the housework but since my mom has fallen 3 times due to a stroke, im Over at her house cleaning, bathing, cooking, etc.all the time. Plus, I have my own health issues, being heart related. My brother mentioned it yesterday, that my house was starting to smell like pee and poop.( He meant the cat litter needed changing). So he came over and changed it, swept, dumped trash, etc. He got on me about my housekeeping and I explained to him that I am handling it. I talked to my mom and on Wed, she is going to be on her own so I can get stuff done in my house. But its difficult being a caregiver for a parent, and having health and mental issues of your own. Usually I watch an episode or 2 of hoarders and that gets me motivated. But when your exhausted,you HAVE no motivation to do ANYTHING. So I can COMPLETELY understand how it got this way. @@ghostsamongus3370 I apologize, but it seems like you may be looking at this situation from a rather personal standpoint. It's essential to remember that depression is a highly individual and subjective experience, and it cannot be generalized. The manifestations of depression can vary greatly from person to person. Passing judgment on whether someone's circumstances warrant their struggles is not appropriate. Depression is often accompanied by a complex blend of traumatic experiences from the past and unresolved issues that one may not have been able to cope with effectively. Each person's journey with depression is unique, and it's crucial to approach it with empathy and understanding. Instead of making assumptions, let's focus on supporting each other in our struggles and being compassionate listeners. Remember, mental health is intricate and requires sensitivity when discussing and dealing with these delicate matters.

They are both suffering from her mother's hoarding. You cannot walk from the front door to the back of the house without having to move things aside. The kitchen is a duplicate of this one or worse. There is a terrible odor in the house. We are so concerned that we are considering reporting to the Environmental Health Office here in England. She would not accept help from us. It would have to come from somewhere official. Honestly, what you say in your videos is so direct, matter-of-fact, and yet so compassionate I almost wish we could import you to help. Mental health needs must be addressed, so that the person does not feel attacked. Even when the living conditions are dirty, the person may feel guilt, shame, or even panic, that can be compounded if the "helpful" actions feel too abrupt or disorienting to the person. Moving too quickly can trigger self destructive behavior in the person. Your concern is good, but please proceed with caution and respect, even though the exwife's behavior may not seem rational.

Yes these are real problems. There was an elderly lady i helped a while back. Her bathroom was piled high of used toilet paper and crammed with stuff. I couldnt stand her having to live like that. I cleared it out and cleaned it so she could use it. I had to do it when she wasnt home. She agreed and a friend took her to the park and kept her busy. I got it done and cleaned her kitchen too. She was so happy to see those rooms cleaned up.What bothered me was ppl were bringing her food each week and what she didnt use would just rot. I asked those ppl to only bring over what she will use and eat. They wouldnt come in her house 'because of the smell'. Her utilities were eventually turned off, which was horrible. I really got onto her church she went to to help her and anyone i could. Her mind was going. Her dog died and finally the pastor came over to help her bury her dog. It was more than depression, it was dementia. She was normally a very clean person. To see her detriorate was devastating. The pastor finally got her in a nursing home. It took a ton of phone calls to get help. She had no support. It was awful. I also didnt charge to clean. Another thing she wasnt doing was taking her heart medication. She had a pacemaker. I cant believe how difficult it was for ppl to help her. About 4 months later she sadly passed away in the nursing home. Thank you so much for helping this person. You did a great job! Thank you for helping her. My dad died from Alzheimer's. He did not want to get help or go to the doctor and it took us quite a while to understand what was happening. It was very, very hard to get help for him or a home. Once he just walked out the door and was found in the suburbs on the other side of the city by some kind soul who just stopped him to ask how he was. I have often wondered about all these people who don't have close family members. Thank you for stepping up and helping, it really is needed.

I need to throw out most of my clothes, I’m agoraphobic & only go out to medical appointments, that will help enormously, & I need to throw away a lot of stuff that I can’t even remember the provenance of.Once I’ve done all that & made room to put my feet without falling, (I do a lot of that,) I’m hoping that I’ll be inspired enough to carry on, though it’s very slow work for me. At least I won’t be such a hoarder any more & won’t be ashamed to hire a cleaner for the things I cannot do, thanks to the arthritis. Just to throw in some advice as a biologist, 70% isopropyl alcohol is actually preferable to 97%. I know it seems like the higher concentration makes more sense, but ~70% is the most effective concentration in killing things. Also that won't sterilize anything, just disinfect. Good luck (:

@luckylunaloops
@luckylunaloops Год назад
@@susiethomas6909 I wanted to know as well, so I did a web search. I found a site that provided the following information: Disinfecting and sterilizing are both types of decontamination, a process that makes something safe to touch. The purpose is to kill enough germs so the risk of infection is extremely low. Disinfectants can kill most viruses and fungi. While disinfectants can kill bacteria, they may not be able to treat bacterial spores, which lay dormant. Overall, sterilization is the most advanced form of decontamination. Sterilization removes all microorganisms. Methods of sterilization may include: pressurized steam (autoclaving) hydrogen peroxide gas ethylene oxide (EtO) gas ionizing radiation (typically used for medical equipment) dry heat cabinets (for medical instruments) infrared radiation advanced filtration
@BlueStarise
@BlueStarise Год назад
@@luckylunaloops Explained it perfectly. As for the alcohol concentration, there needs to be a certain amount of water present for the solution to actually pass into bacteria, etc. Turns out ~70% is just about the perfect amount of water to alcohol ratio to pass into bacteria and kill them. Also keep in mind that when you mix 70% isopropyl alcohol with more water, you're diluting it further and making it less effective. I would suggest keeping a spray bottle with nothing but 70%ipa in it to use as a disinfectant. 2-10% bleach is also a very good disinfectant.

This is actually a real mental illness and this is evidence of that. You know that she is beyond mortified and ashamed. I got psychiatric help, including medicine and a couple years of therapy. I was so grateful to my landlord for cleaning the first one that I insisted on cleaning the second one myself. @blackdandelion5549 10 месяцев назад
@@uan9166 I want to speak to your comment as I believe you have not ever had to live or deal with a hoarder, let alone in an ongoing way for what may be years. You likely have no idea how many times the family has helped or tried to and when a professional comes in the hoarder doesn't curse at them, call them names, talk down to them, tell them how they are going to use this, that, and the other, make accusations of the person stealing from them when they lose things in the home, risk their own health repeatedly, and I could go on with things a family member or members of a hoarder have had to endure. Trying to get the person help. Calling adult services. It's the hoarders house and they can tell family member's to get the F out and never come back and as a family member of this person you can sometimes only take that kind of verbal abuse and maybe seeing your parent and childhood home or your sister/brother declining for years and years before you can't take the abuse on yourself anymore and you need to step away for your own mental health and your own life. That is what it is like being a family member of someone who hoards. The accusation this person's family does not give a F, when maybe they have given so much of themselves they have nothing more to give because the person sees nothing wrong with their behavior and doesn't want any help. Until you have lived it and lived the absolute heartbreak every time you go to your family member's home and are not even allowed to help pick up because you will get yelled at or accused of taking something they lost days ago you have no idea what it's like dealing with a hoarder. Maybe it would be 100X worse without the family doing all they could to this point. 99% of the time the state won't have them get treatment. They can refuse and live in unsanitary conditions. It's their place so they can tell any daughter, son, sister, brother, etc. to go F themselves and get off the property and while it hurts and tears the family apart . . . .there is nothing anyone can do. What kills you is when you have tried and tried for so many years to help someone and they don't want help and don't see any issue with living like this and you simply can't do anymore without taking from your own family, your own mental health, w/o risking bringing you kids to see grandma/grandpa living like this, but you can't risk your kids health and the family member blames you for never bringing the kids over bc "you don't want them to have a relationship with the kids" or w/e reason they say, but the blame is always not their issues. You can only do so much as a human being and give so much of yourself before experiencing caregivers fatigue. It kills you inside that your family member lives like this and there is not a dang thing you can do about it. Don't blame the family members for this person's issues as you have no idea what they may have been through with this person for years and years and years. The family members may very well be in therapy themselves from this behavior and the horrible things it can do to a family, not just the one person you see on the screen. You are judging people you don't even know for what took years to become the way it is, not a day. Maybe the family members need empathy and sympathy as they can't help this person with their behaviors either.

Yep. My grandmother and mother are quite hoarders too. Things just don't make it to the trash, but I don't think that having three kids helped at all. Now that I'm on my own, I'm trying to be more of a minimalist. My weakness tends to be furniture. Empty corner? Get a small table. Small table? Get a table lamp. Got a new job? I need a work computer table, a brand new chair, and a cabinet. And in the end, these end up being cluttered because I use them as storage spaces more than what I had originally intended them to be.
@RG-iw7py

Maybe it's not hereditary. Someone linked hoarding with narcissism. Look up NPD and Carol Burnett sketches 'The Family' (as a brake), then Ross Rosenberg interview 'The UGLY Truth About Gaslighting, Brainwashing ...' Narcissist hoarder doesn't want to part with anything because people do leave them but things don't, so they hold on to the, like if their life would depend on it.

I’m facing my first shoulder replacement in 6-7 weeks (12-14 months total recovery time), I need the other shoulder replaced, as well, then I’m looking at both hips needing replacement, then rods & screws in my lower spine. My husband works almost 7 days/week, and cleaning is not his forte, plus, he says it’s not in our budget to hire a maid service. I do whatever I can-sometimes laundry; I sit on a rolling stool, then pick up clothing items with a toy “grabber” and place them in the washer. Then she won't be using every dish and if she does she won't feel overwhelmed in doing the dishes again. It takes patience, determination, courage and commitment to do what you are doing here. I wonder how dirty people can be sometimes because in my house we don’t even let a dirty glass sit in the sink for more than few hours. In India we clean our house every single day. We worship in our house, live in our house, make memories in our house. So we must respect and cherish the house itself for always keeping us safe, sound and happy. Moreover, cluttered homes are the doorway straight to hell. The more your house gets dirty the less happier and progressive you will become in your life. Once again, great work man! While I'm trying my hardest, I've realised that I am a bit of a hoarder...
