You should protect yourself with masks. The last time I cleaned out an old barn I ended up with pneumonia for 3 months. IT was awful.

Posole 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋yeah! With homemade corn tortillas? Or pan blanco! 😊 By the look on Lorraine’s face, there had better be a plan made for a tool shed by the green house. Or inside the green house?

Our neighbor helped tear down an old dusty shed a few years ago & he almost lost his life to lung issues. Several years of hospital stays & weakness. He is often cautioning us to be careful with our lungs & don't take them for granted. Just want you guys safe & healthy.:)

That dust is very toxic , but recent history shows us that a large number of people would rather die than to wear a simple mask

The pieces of metal you found with the ads on them are called plates. They are used on large printing presses known as Web presses for printing newspapers and such. My dad used to bring them home from the newspaper plant for me from time to time when I was a teen and I used them to patch rust holes on cars I was working on.

My mom had a small stall of their barn as a playhouse when she was a child. She would take pages from the Sears catalog and use them as wallpaper. She was born in 1935. That barn is still standing. We went back about thirty years ago and her “wallpaper” was still there. It’s a family farm still in our family in Kentucky.

I can think of all kinds of things to do with that building, a processing center for after the beast have been dispatched. Preserving garden harvests. A studio for arts and crafts. A place to raise your chicken starting with an incubator, just to name a few

You can make your own gutter by making a straight cut down pvc pipe and fitting it so steel roof sits inside pipe then use metal strap to hold it. If you find that pvc is cheaper than gutters.

What a tresure you have in that old barn. So many uses for it. Garden shed, poultry house/pens, furrowing stalls for the kune kune etc. And looks like it has some concrete floors! Find you someone who has a sawmill and get rough lumber to fix it up with. Just so much waiting to be put back in shape.

It's 4am here in Northern Ireland, Storm Isha has just blown through and woke me up so while my 5 cats have pinned my legs I watched this (if it was April I'd be outside, January 4am is pretty dark) I don't have a barn sadly but I do have an Irish Stone Cottage and it has a couple rooms I haven't been in yet. There's some old potato boxes, a turf wheelbarrow, and other things of varying description. After seeing this I'm keen to get one of the rooms cleaned out!

The hay will make a good winter bedding in the green house with the chickens scratching and pooping on it. 🐓 💩 Saw YT homesteader experiment with straw and hay at different stages of decomposition. The more decomposed the straw or hay, the better for the garden. Add that with your chickens holy squat, and you will have beautiful soil to work with in the spring. An airbnb (for your guests during workshops) -smart idea.

I wish we had an old barn on our place. We do have a good sized metal outbuilding but nothing with any real character. We bought this 10 acre property a year ago and are making it our own. The house was built 18 years ago so there isn’t too much we need to do, but we are finding problems that we need to take care of as everyone does.

Great job getting the barn cleared out! It looks to be in good shape. Maybe instead of tearing out the panels where the kennels are to get to the dog houses you might be able to just go in with a saw and cut the dog houses down smaller to get them out. Having those sections enclosed might come in handy later. Maybe think about leaving them intact until you decide what you'll do with the spaces. Those could be good areas for brooders etc.

1985! My birth year! 🌻Bought canning jars from an estate sale. It was the deceased mother’s and they were stored in old cardboard boxes. Opened then a month later to clean and found old newspaper in the boxes dated 1973. It was wild to see the prices of things at that time. I think a dozen eggs was $.30-$.40 and milk was $.89 a gallon.

1985, I guessed the date right! that's a really cool aluminum sign with groceries on it. I agree, any building on a property is a good thing, even when it's beat up and needs work. With the prices of lumber, metal and everything else right now, it's a huge bonus.

When I saw those hardened concrete bags, all I could think of was erosion control. Placed just above the "sink hole" you always talk about it would slow down the run off water so that things did not get worse. My guess is that what you have is a ravine in the hill going down to the creek area. Rock, stone, or dried concrete are great for breaking up the fastest water that does the most damage. Or put it in the bottom to let the water land on it like a gutter splash block does to keep it from digging deeper. Lots of uses for such things when you have a water problem. Just a thought.

Excellent work! I remember when we bought our 1850 property in Michigan back in 2014 we found 5 separate dump sites. One was old bottles, dishes and cans. Another was appliances, books, household items and still others with farm equipment, metal scraps and more. We rented a huge dumpster and filled it up with what we found on the property. The front of the property was immaculate but not so much the back 3 acres. It felt like a weight off of my shoulders when we cleaned it up and was so happy with the new space. That barn of yours is going to be more beautiful than it already is once it's all cleaned.
