What a great well organized video. It really helped me to understand the cleaning/sanitizing side of brewing and now I'm confident enough to make my first attempt

Thanks for watching. It's a boring subject but still so critical to making good beer and I think a lot of customers really do not understand how to properly use the chemicals but hopefully this clarifies things a bit.

I just switched from a powder and I did not expect all the foam... the bottles are drying on the tree and they have suds inside of them... surely that's not ok? I'm too scared not to rinse. The ethanol spray, I use it to clean my piecings haha, bonus usage! So it's definitely safe on skin and also does a good job at cleaning piercing jewelry.

Thank you for this video kee, It has cleared up a lot of uncertainty as to what the many sanitising/cleaning products in the market place do. I stopped using Sodium Metabisulphite some years ago because or the off flavors it left in he beers. Never thought of using phosporic sanitiser on the SS BBQ framework, I'm going to give that a go after I finish this spirit run. I appreciate the videos you post, entertaining and informatve, good on you, Cheers

Good vid, thanks ... only add I will make is StellarSan eats laminated kitchen benches (the colour layer) .. my first mead is going to cost me about $1000. Getting some information out there on what the products are safe and evil with might be a good idea. When people hear "food grade" and all the web/youtube spraying it everywhere with no warnings, we assume "safe". Just chalking it up to experience. My first mead better taste good! Even if it doesn't I will pretend it does lol.

Was the stellarSan diluted? Concentration is the key here. Certainly if the product is in it's full concentration it can be quite aggressive on some materials. Once the StellarSan has been diluted it will be similarly corrosive as Coca Cola. If you are handling the StellarSan undiluted be very careful but once it's diluted to the correct instructions on the bottle it's relatively safe. Safe enough to drink in small quantities once diluted to the correct concentration.

Great vid but I have heard that iodophor is more effective at killing bacteria and yeast than phosphoric acid based sanitisers. Ie bugs can become immune to acid based products. Is that true?

I'd like to add, when using bleach, if you have some k-meta (potassium metabisulphite or sodium meta) you can add a bit to water and it will deactivate the bleach. It's also useful when you have municipal water that uses chloramine, which will not evaporate, esp if they use higher than normal concentrations as k meta will break those down as well. (Some municipalities use straight chlorine, which will evaporate in about 12-24hrs whereas others use a mixture of chlorine and ammonia which produces chloramine and does not evaporate, because it doesn't require as high a concentration) about 1/16th of a teaspoon in a six gallon(23L) will neutralize all the bleach. This is what's in Camden tablets. Can use a bit more for rinsing after bleaching to sanitize and deactivate. But of course, star San or acid disinfectants are better, but if you're being extra cheap, this works well. But if you can afford it, go with better sanitizers.
@KegLand
@KegLand 2 года назад
Yes that works but the issue is that if you use bleach then use the sulphites to deactivate the bleach you then have sulphites in your fermenter and this will starve yeast of oxygen if it gets into the start of your fermentation process.
@strategicgnomer1
@strategicgnomer1 2 года назад
@@KegLand true, but I've used this several times with no issue, key is having the correct amount. Also, giving a good shake with lots of air. It's ok for small batches, where you can add a lot of oxygen in. Just saying, it's useable and cheap and has plenty of other uses as well. Love your stuff btw, if I had the money I'd be getting a fermenter from ya. But I'm brewing on a budget.

My local brew shop sold me stellarSan as a cleaner and no-rinse sanitiser in one. Is this correct?
@zt7489
@zt7489 4 года назад
Hi, is there anything that might stop a person putting the correct ration of stellar san into a spray bottle and applying it like you would use the 70% ethanol spray product? What are the pros and cons , if any please?
@KegLand
@KegLand 4 года назад
Stellar San is great in a spray bottle but it has a couple small draw backs. When it dries it leaves small amount of dried acid. Ethanol doesnt have this issue and dries without any residue. Also ethanol can be better for some plastics that can possibly get damaged with acid based sanitisers. Also ethanol is particularly good when there is a chance that a the ethanol can get into the beer itself. So in an airlock for instance if the ethanol gets sucked into the beverage it will make very little noticeable difference in the finished beer.
@clivebrooker1
@clivebrooker1 3 года назад
@@KegLand Presumably your ethanol is de-natured? Wouldn't want this in my beer.

Great Video Kee, question, can you reuse your sanitised solution?
@KegLand
@KegLand 5 лет назад
Yes absolutely. Provided that the PH stays below about 2.4 you can continue to re-use the same solution. If the ph starts to increase then add a bit more until the PH comes back down again.
@KegLand
@KegLand 5 лет назад
Please do not reuse the Powdered brewing wash or Superkill ethanol spray. These are not reusable.
