Two and a half hours careful conservation in under two minutes! A 16th century tapestry belonging to Henry VIII is being washed in one of the worlds largest tapestry baths, measuring approximately 9 metres x 5 metres. Using de-ionised (softened) water and our own mix of detergent the tapestry is washed over a period of 4 hours by our textile conservation specialists, and over seen by our conservation scientists. The tapestry is left in place with fans and will be dry within 24 hours.

This actually makes sense. Tapestries were made with yarn-dyed wool and flax (linen) that dry out and become brittle over time. Several old housekeeping books recommend that when a piece is very dry and brittle to soak it for several hours or even overnight, to rehydrate the fibers. Some recommend a water soak, others recommend using a light clean pure oil. So, the long soak probably did it a world of good for hydrating the yarns after so many centuries. Also it was good to remove all the dust and particles which can have microscopic sharp parts that grind and cut into the yarns over time.

Brilliant variation on the 'standard' restauration video's! (However, I still would like to see the 'standard version' too...) PS Anybody knows what music is being played?

Ah, I'd like one of those gizmos for my apartment. Does it have a vacuum attachment?

I need to clean a tapestry and have loved seeing this. It's very helpful. I wish I knew their detergent recipe. It must be a royal secret.

Just curious.....what kind of soap did you use to clean with? Imagine cleaning one of your antique rugs or tapestries like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NPutO2Lqy7Q.html (ON THE FLOOR). Then 'shaking' out the wash water by putting your expensive rug, tapestry, carpet, etc., in a centrifuge: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NPutO2Lqy7Q.html?t=385. Cringe-worthy.....isn't it?

It's unbelievable how much dirt accumulated on the tapestry over the centuries. Almost makes you wonder what court staff did during KH8's lifetime, in order to clean it.

@toadabc I think it's an agitator. Like in a washing machine, but gentler.

I would think something like that would have a tag, "Dry clean only"
