I did this and almost broke my garbage disposal and when I told my dad he said a plumber had just told him he wished people would stop doing this. 0/10 Would not recommend!!!
My mother told me about this "hack" way back in the 80's. She had a household cleaning book with helpful hints and this was in it. I have done it forever. The book was called Helpful Hints By Heloise.
@@oicuff1635 as much as I love Heloise with all my heart, she was wrong about this one. It damages the blades and puts way more stress on the motor than it was made for. (According to the installer of our new one, who said it's why the old one broke) But Heloise was the bomb for cleaning and other household chores back then. One mistake doesn't tarnish her reputation in my book :)
We just have these little lemon scented balls called "plink" to throw in the garbage disposal. They're specifically made to clean it and they're very cheap at Walmart so idk why anyone would use ice. Plus they smell really nice.
I know. It saddens me when someone goes "So I learned this off of Tik Tok" as if the internet and people who knew that knowledge beforehand didn't exist first. Or they start a conversation with,"Hey I saw this really cool thing on Tik Tok you gotta see it." I swear to God someone told me they research stuff on the application (app) and I wanted so bad to leave, but I was at work and it was a coworker... or this other time a little girl came up to me to ask if they had something and I said no sorry and she went,"I saw it on Tik Tok." And I'm thinking omg kid I don't care. Outside though I was like wow.
Never put a utensil down there!! The blades could bite onto it and whip it around! You could end up hurting yourself, your spoon and your garbage disposal!!
So I use a slow stream of water, a little bit of dawn dishwashing liquid, and fabulous-o or Mr. Clean liquid cleaner. Run the disposal, and pour dawn down in, and quickly use fabulous-o and it foams up like the tabs, goes over to the other sink (if you have a dual sink) and let it run with a pencil stream of water. Not only cleans it, but freshens it too. Plus it's cheaper than those tabs.
Why would backing up the water from the disposal clean it though? It's not like they're removing the gunks that come up manually, so it's just going back down when it's done coming up, am I correct?
I think when it comes up they just throw away the gunk, but I don’t have a garbage disposal so I’m not 100% sure. That’s just how I think it would be. But if they don’t take it out then idk why they would do this.
Do you think human teeth are as strong as stainless steel "blades" inside a garbage disposal? They aren't really blades, like in the way a person might picture a sharp, thin kitchen knife.
@spill Why do you think that? I'm guessing you're basing your response on the hardness scale, (and although there are different types of steel with varying degrees of hardness), I understand that tooth enamel is harder than steel. But tooth enamel is more brittle than steel, so just because ice could cause a tooth to chip, doesn't mean that ice is going to chip steel blades. For example, a diamond is a 10 on the hardness scale and is the hardest mineral, but we could break or chip a diamond with a hammer. I think the issue here is that hardness doesn't = toughness.
@@Throatzillaaa diamonds are rated the highest in terms of gemstones, though and gemstones are quite fragile I think ice can cause steel blades damage, but i’d have to see test results. this was strictly a response to your statement “do you think human teeth are as strong as stainless steel blades” :3
There's an even easier way to clean dirty pipes. I don't really know how garbage disposals work but if it's somewhat similar to a sink drain try this! Pour some baking soda into the drain and add vinegar and leave overnight without turning on water. The next day turn on the water as usual to get rid of the paste. It works the same as a strong cleaning detergent. It melts off the gunk inside.
I did this like 5 years ago. When all said and done. It was leaking from underneath and broken. Me buying a new disposal and paying to have installed. DON’T DO IT!!!
Put your hand down in the garbage disposal and clean out anything you you can feel. After cut a lemon in 1/2 & use both sides both sides of lemon but one at a time grinding into dust while garbage disposal is on then repeat & vola you have a clean garbage disposal.🤜🏽🤛🏽 Im a general contractor & plumber as well. Leave the ice for your drinks or whatever bc this can break the motor or break pieces inside the cylinder disposal
You should always have the water running if you have the thingy spinning I don’t know why personally because like why would that make a difference but that’s just what people say
To the comment talking about stuff actually being in the sink every time you turn it on that’s not what I’m talking about people say even if there’s nothing in the sink when you turn it on you should have water running that’s why I said “always” …They talk about it as if the blades will get damaged if the water isn’t running regardless of stuff being in it or not that’s what I was getting at but yes please IQ 100 me
Also you should start the water running before you add anything into the disposal and keep the water and disposal on for 30 seconds after the food or whatever has gone down. People turn it off too quickly.
@@oicuff1635 I had to explain this to my mom after she sent chicken down my disposal, I was gone for two days and came back to the most foul smelling house ever. All the chicken was just ground up in the top 6 inches of the pipes. Also had to explain she she couldn't just send the whole bowl of chicken salad down at once, but in little bits at a time as the water ran.
Just use Lemon or lime wedges to clean and deodorize the disposal. When using Lemon and Lime wedges, don’t run the water. That way the juices will stick to the blades until you use the sink again. You may also keep the drain covered to prevent any odor.
My hubby is a master plumber & owns his own business. This is a huge misconception!! Please DON'T do this as it damages the disposal. It's the same with the "flushable" toilet wipes....just don't!! Or continue to do it & help pay my bills, lol. Helps keep the hubby busy 😜
OMG I just did this and it worked so well. I can’t believe how. I’ve it looks. Now that read the comment section, I hope I didn’t damage my garbage disposal.
Run just normal water, baking soda and white vinegar down your drain and garbage disposal down if you feel like your garbage disposal isn’t working right. If stuff is coming up your sink that means something is wrong with the plumbing, either a clog or something with the pressure (hopefully when the ice melts it will be ok????). Ice will just destroy your garbage disposal blades, like trying to cut rocks with a knife and expecting it to stay sharp. If you are having trouble with your garbage disposal after this, call a local plumber to come check it out but one bout of this shouldn’t be too bad as long as you take care of it otherwise!! Good luck.
@@CamelliaCorn there’s no need to be mean, sometimes you just don’t know something until you’re told. There’s nothing about that type of information that makes someone dumber or smarter for it. Main thing is we are learning and accepting new information and not sticking our feet in the ground. Seriously, think about what you type before just typing it, no need to send that energy into the world. Jeez it can just make people feel so hurt sometimes and it sucks
@@MsTwissy "Sometimes you just don’t know something until you’re told". Are you fr? I agree with your statement out of context, but this isn't "I don't know how to fix my laptop unless instructed so I'm gonna just call support to fix it." This is literally the equivalent of taking 5 minutes craft life hacks as Bible and mix bleach in your food in order to clean it. It's stupid at best and hazardous at worst. I really hope OP is a kid and not some grown adult running the house. If this isn't common sense then the comment sections wouldn't be filled with ppl thinking it's a bad idea. Shame on the content creator tho but you're right, it does suck to be OP. Must be hard getting through life with an underdeveloped brain.
Plumber here, this is almost legit but also wrong. Running ice in your disposal can knock out debris or rust if the disposal was seized up (after breaking it loose with a disposal wrench). But your drain just had a partial clog. You probably overuse your disposal. Your p-trap and waste arm are probably just full of food and grease.
@@Bee-dp3st You're correct wood maybe porous, however it's antimicrobial. It literally kills germs naturally. Throwing out a spoon simply because it touched the water from cleaning your disposal is completely unnecessary.
A safer way to clean it without breaking it is to plug the other sink and pour a 1/2 of baking soda down the garbage disposal, then about a cup of white vinegar mixed with a cop of cold water down the garbage disposal. When it foams up, turn it on.
@@katelinparks9536 the opposite is actually true. Plastics harbor more bacteria. Wood and bamboo both are anti-microbial. It cleans itself from the inside out. If you're that worried, just spray some bleach on it that'll take care of anything the wood/bamboo didn't kill.
Ice would dull the blade. It's meant to dispose of foods. There are tabs like "plink" to help clean the garbage disposal better. Your way seems to be much better. I never thought to use salt tho.
You can usually pull the rubber part up out of there and actually see down in it and clean it by hand or with a long scrub brush or something. Just don't turn the switch on with your hand down in it, of course! 😂
This worked! No joke, I have the same garbage disposal. I did it twice. The first time was yucky brown water and the second time was clear. So neat, thx!
So about 3 months ago I cleaned my mom’s garbage disposal with all of her old ice from her ice maker. Her garbage disposal was smelling less than fresh. I seriously thought I was going to break it with all the ice. It bubbled up like the end of the video and made a weird grinding sound and then starting running normally and everything flushed through. It seemed like rust (it’s old) and certainly didn’t seem like any kind of sewage. After that, all “off” smells were gone. However, it was so scary and I thought I was gonna break it, so I’ll never do it again. I didn’t learn about it off of TikTok but just remember hearing somewhere that’s how you clean it.
Consulting Tic Tok for anything is like arguing with a GPS. It may make you feel good at that time, but it's not gonna get you any other conclusion in the long run.
That seems like a great way to dull the blades in your garbage disposal. They sell the cleaning solution this just made for this, you put it in there with hot water and you let it sit for like 20 minutes and then you run the disposal.
Ice cubes are just to clean the blades to clean the pipes you should use vinegar with baking soda and some Dawn dishwashing liquid that's what my mom does all the time it works great
I’m so glad she said she was throwing away the spoon. I was utterly disgusted thinking she would use that wooden spoon again! Thank goodness she knows better!
They have these little things you can buy at the store that foam in the disposal and clean it. Or a natural way is vinegar baking soda and lemon juice.
Dishwasher tablets work great if it’s super gross. I just run it with hot water for a bit then turn on the garbage disposal when I think the outer layer is dissolved enough.
The engineer where I lived advised me to just toss a few ice cubs down to knock the gunk off of the blades. Not necessarily to clean the disposal, that would require maybe some of the cleaners designed to clean.
Just chop up some citrus peel - lemon, lime, grapefruit... Throw that in there a couple times a month and let it spin. Not only will it get the crap off your blades, your kitchen will smell amazing 🥰.
I use boiling water or very hot water from the tap and dish soap while its running. It usually does a good job to decrease all the blades and melt off any gunk.
You can also do it an easier way by you using cut of lemon rinds or a very thin chicken bones. Use warm water and let it run. My grandmother taught me, yes it works
I clean mines with lime , lemon or oranges after i use the juice I just throw it inside the disposal and turn it on a couple of times it smells fresh and clean all the time. Then i throw it out after 😊
Consult your elders... lemon or lime juice is not only more effective but also will not clog/jam your expensive garbage disposal... even better yet... just buy a mesh sink trap and a yellow rubber glove if you genuinely can't stand touching it. And if you're really that broke that you can't afford a $2 sink trap... just throw your left over food into the garbage can and rinse the plate.
I know everyone in the comments is talking about how you shouldn’t do this but I’m just focused on her “I gotta throw away this spoon” at the end. That has me dying
