Cleaning out a Hoarder's House | Tiny House Renovation Phase 1: Cleanup

Well, I finally did it: I completed the first step in the COMPLETE OVERHAUL of my tiny house in the desert. Most of you probably remember the walkthrough I did with my brother on his channel but, if not, here's the link: • We bought a house from...
If you watched that video then you know what you're in for; if not... well, there's a reason that we "affectionately" call it the Poophouse. The house and property have been abandoned for 5-10 years with only the rats and squatters to keep it company. Some time ago, even the rats abandoned it. My ultimate plan is to make it inhabitable but I'll just be taking it one slow step at a time because, quite frankly, I have no idea what I'm doing. BUT, I do know that the next step is demolition so, if rat poo isn't your thing, maybe the next video will strike your fancy.
Many thanks to my lovely brother ‪@HomeMadeModern‬ for giving me this disgusting house.
Many thanks to my two lovely helpers in this video:

I didn't expect to be in my feelings, but I was lowkey touched by the bit where you found the lid to the toilet tank, brushed it off, and put it back. Maybe there wasn't any emotional force behind it, but in a way, you humanized the situation. It's not a dump, it was a home. Somebody lived there, and probably died there, and these are their things. Sure, it's mostly trash now, but watching you do little things like take the sheets off the bed makes me wonder if this is, in a way, giving closure to the previous owner (who presumably is dead, or long gone).

Honestly...spent my entire life cleaning up after my mom who I then found out had early on set dementia mixed with manic depression. She's an amazing woman/badass..but I could never figure out why we had to live the way we did....Life can do things to the most beautiful creative and lovingly sensitive people on the Earth! We have to strengthen and protect our sensitive people! They prize things beyond the material. They don't understand the "machine". THEY ARE PURE GOLD AND NEED TO BE SEEN AS SUCH! I'm not saying baby them or anything....just notice a sensitive person when you see them and invigorate them rather than exhaust them! Fast forward from my confused adolescents years to middle late 20's...I'm a full time cleaner now and REALLY enjoy making spaces feel welcoming! There is so much behind the mind and our internal as well as external presence that shows where we are at in life...I love giving people a chance. Even if they aren't able to keep it up to the standard you left it...even if you have to keep coming back to help them feel human again. The feeling of love is so rewarding...the feeling of trying to give someone a space that is respectable and loving whether they are aware of it or not is just SO REWARDING!

I got into a car accident a long time ago and now can't hardly lift a book. My cleaning lady, well, you have no idea, you can't imagine, how much she means to me. She is honest (I had a lady from the Punjab, I think she had just grown up with different values who broke my heart what she stole.) And my lady now is good-natured and she leaves my places just so happy-making. I think we ought to bang some pans for cleaners too.

Even if you aren't a horder it kind of puts into perspective how much of your stuff will in reality be mostly thrown away or donated. A lot of things we keep are only valuble to us and someone else will probably just throw it away once we are gone. It has motivated me to only keep things I really love and not let stuff and things burden me because in reality I'm the only one attached to those things and I shouldn't have to feel bad about letting things go of things that no longer serve a purpose.

My grandma loves stepping out onto carpet after a bath she used to tell me how my mom's bathroom with no carpet was just too cold

I could be wrong but there was a time when that house was better. Just from the stove and the kitchen stuff, there was someone who cooked and put lace curtains up and then things changed and it went topsy turvy. I have to say this was intriguing to watch. So many items you removed that could easily make it to the homeless shelters. The pots/pans and all the clothes and such can easily be cleaned, sanitized and really needy people would love to receive any of it. Books, paper recycled, even the appliances can be reworked, cleaned, sanitized and used again. Sure they are not new modern versions. But some people would still love to get them for their use... Thumbs Up!

I'm a general contractor in california and every few months I do some work for a client who works with family trusts after an elder has deceased/gone into a home. I get called in whenever there is a hoarder and they need some dumping done as well as minor repairs to get the house in sellable condition. Usually my client and her helpers do all of the bagging/cleaning and we just take it to the thrift store and dump. Last year we had an INSANE job in a multimillion dollar home, absolutely packed to the gills with trash and possessions. We estimated about 20,000 magazines were hauled away. There was just about every item that had been offered on QVC from the 90s-00s in boxes. We went through 18 40 yard trailers of just trash, I don't even remember how many trailers of thrift store runs. Was about 4 months of work. This is giving me bad flashbacks lol!

During Katrina, a family donated 25 trash bags of clothing that had belonged to their grandmother. She was old, very, very obese, and she did nothing but order clothes from off the TV. As it turned out, the clothes were in excellent shape and we served numbers of very obese women from Louisiana who ran from the hurricane at the last minute with nothing.

I hope those books -especially the old crafting books - went to the equivalent of a charity shop over there; there's a lot of people who love doing vintage craft projects! It's a weird niche, but one where we love getting old craft books even if they're a bit natty. There's probably people who'll buy some of the vintage adverts he collected online, too - not my thing, but I see stuff like that on eBay sometimes. Of course, just listing anything possibly collectable/sell-able on eBay would probably take forever! I think there's curio collectors who'd like the eye-chart... At least in some of the metal trash there's the raw materials to upcycle it into something nice.

In case anyone's curious like me, I googled the name on the American Legion certificate (Joaquin Ayala) and found an obituary from March of this year, so my guess is the Uyedas picked this up via a deceased estate sale or similar. If it's the same guy then I assume he bailed on the property years ago to go live with family, and the obit sounded like he was well-loved, so there's that.

You are an amazingly energetic person whom cleans like a boss. Just a thought, the house you are cleaning dose not appear to be a Hoarder's house. It is a house which the person has no self worth, not necessarily someone whom has a fear of loss. Basically Filth dose not equal hoarder, hoarding is a mental illness and should not be linked to occasions it is not the cause of but YES sometimes hoarders do end up living in filth which is very sad.

To everyone saying that this isn't a hoarder's house, Hoarding Disorder (it's an actual medical disorder) does generally present itself with mass gathering and keeping of trash and unused/unusable things, but large volume is not the only sign. Some of the other key indicators are: -Unusable beds/furniture due to clutter -Objects and trash filling sinks and bathtubs -Dirty food preparation surfaces -Not cleaning rodent/pest droppings/nests -Misplacing important items/documents in clutter All of this is displayed in this house.

It’s not so much a hoarder’s house as the home of someone who just could not cope with his daily life for a very long time. It’s sorta sad how you can see the aging and disability of a man in the layers. All the black mold and rat/mouse evidence makes me really glad you used the mask and gloves... so yeah , plenty of trash, but sure hope some of those clothes went to donation. Lots of vintage keepsakes, but it took some work to find things. Thanks for sharing your work adventures with us - inspiring!

Thank you for showing compassion and maturity, and for not being another holier-than-thou ignoramus who has nothing to contribute but "ewwww!" or "I could never live like this, how hard is it to just clean up?" None of us know what limitations life may have in store for us, now, or as we age x

I'm in process of renovating my own tiny house that was like a hoarder house literally filled with trash and dog poo and urine from 5 pitbulls that lived there. Glad to see someone else as determined as I am to turn a poo house into a livable space. You are incredible!

Good job. Personally, I would light a match because of all the mold everywhere. You don't know how deep it goes, maybe right into the structure itself. There may still be some mold left even though you can't see it and you think you got rid of it. So you will paint over the walls or put some wallpaper over it - and you will breathe it for years. It is really dangerous.

Couldn't agree more. For only 700 Sq ft on such a huge lot, it seems much quicker to just tear it down and get to rebuild exactly what you want since you're gonna go all the way down to studs anyway
@vee7330

You can always combat this by soaking certain areas with some mold spray, paint over it with a special primer that contains particles like mold spores, and have frequent ozium treatments (it basically zaps all the "bad" ions in the air, which also kills of bacteria, mold, and odor particles). It definitely doesn't help with mold in the structure but it's a pretty good way to deal with it short term.

My mother in law is a hoarder.. they do cleanups like this and she started my hoard.. when we got our house we didn’t have anything so she would bring truck loads to ‘see what we could use’… there boxes in my garage with family portraits of people I have never known or laid eyes on.. even a receipt book that looks to be from child support.. like they documented every penny that was given and for what.. and I mean every penny.. and other random stop.. they promised to come back and take what I didn’t want away.. but it’s been years and nothing.. I’m not with their son anymore so they could care less

@@boxingzorket in my 1860 Belgium house i bought in Januar 2020, there is dark brown carpet on the walls behind the bath and pale carpet on the other walls. I leave it there untill i have money to make the new bathroom upstairs. I am from the adjacent country of the Netherlands and i had never seen carpet on the walls before. One of the people who lived here said that the whole village came to look to the super modern bathroom. In live in the Battle of the Bulge area. Belgiums even put white wallpaper on the ceiling. In the Netherland its mostly stuc (plaster).

I know it's a bit late, but for future reference it doesn't take much and it is totally worth the money to have some of those paper products appraised by a collection expert. Especially things like old pin up posters, baseball cards etc. When they are in as good condition as those seemed to be, some can go for hundreds if not thousands of dollars depending on the printer/manufacturer and era. Just a pro tip for some extra cash towards future projects!

So many folks are jumping all over this saying, "gross" & "disgusting." This is just a mild, normal kind of junked up space. True hoarding is much bleaker. But, good job!

The place and property has so much potential. Nice to bring renewal and a future to it. Sad to see remnants of someone's life though and to just throw it all away. The garbage for sure. It would have been nice to see recycling. There were many plastic bottles and paper. Some of the more personal finds: photos, significant papers, letters, may have been nice to hold on to for family members of the former owner. Anyway, looking forward to seeing the transformation!

To those commenting about “good stuff” being thrown out, please! This is not a home that you would want to share the items as you don’t know what’s been in contact with any of it. For example, you find an old pan, you have no idea what it could have been used for, or what was ever kept within. And definitely NOTHING from a bathroom.......eee-oooo! I wouldn’t want some poor soul to be affected by anything that could have any harmful past to it. Really......think about it.

Lol, that's nothing. The last hoarder house i cleaned out took 3 40 yard dumpsters. Filled to the top then capped with the houses carpet. Had to dispose of 6 dead cats, and 2ft thick worth of newspapers, magazines and junk mail. By the time i got to the floor the dates on the papers made it back to the late seventies. When i was about to start the landlord asked me "what is the quickest way to get the job done?" I told him a gallon of gasoline and a match.
