Cleaning & Setting up the Gerbil Cage
The gerbils cage - www.zooplus.co....
The cage came with 5 wheels that screwed into the base however I decided to remove them and put the cage on top of a coffee table as I couldn't see the gerbils very well when the cage was on the floor. The table was purchased from ikea and the cage fits perfect on top as the dimensions are the same.

The bedding I use in the digging area is a mixture of dust extracted wood shavings and Megazorb and the bedding for the rest of the cage is called Aubiose.
Gerbils are very active pets therefore they need plenty of enrichment to keep their brains simulated. Some examples of enrichment for gerbils includes
-Cardboard boxes - they love to chew these up and hide in them (and they are free!)
-Cork tunnels/pieces of cork - gerbils will climb on these and gnaw their teeth on them
-Rocks - great for filing down their nails and climbing
-Ledges - they like to use these to perch & jump on
-Bendy bridges - they are very versatile and great for their teeth
-Chinchilla sand - beneficial for their coat & often used as a litter tray
-Lots of bedding - excellent for digging and making tunnels
-Scatter feeding - encourages natural behaviours

Just changed my gerbil cage from a small mesh one to a large natural glass tank. They're much happier and more active- which is surprising given that they are older gerbils. Thank you so much for the video, it really helped :)

When I get my own 2 bedroom house, I am planning on living in one room, and turning one into a gerbil safe room for about 3 or 4 gerbils. I don't need anyone! I just need gerbils!

You have to clean gerbil caged once a week.

victoria Lea for her, she probably only cleans it out every month or so. Typically with cages this big, they only spot clean.

Victoria lea only if you have more than one. And if you have a pregnant gerbil, you have to clean their cage out every 8-9 days as it can stress the gerbils out

I so wish Living World would re do this cage with metal steel panels and plastic base, it would be so hygenic and cost effective then instead of mouldy bacteria growing wood. I would buy it then for sure. Great video as usual Erin. 👍😍

I am confused. I don't want to use a big glass tank, I'm told wire cages are bad. I have wooden 4ft x 18 x 18 inch vivarium but I'm told there bad because the gerbils will chew it up. So I don't know what to do. If I can have in a vivarium I need to put in a very low light blub I there because it would be total black in there

Thank you so much! That's a good question, I would love to continue owning them for a long time so I think that I would but I'm not sure. When one of my pets passes away I completely clean the cage and disinfect it - I also clean most of the items inside it but some e.g. Wooden items can't be cleaned easily :)

Thanks x i had 2 gergils a while ago and i have kept the cage and the supplies in the shed- now i realise the cage is to smLl anywayso if i were 2 get gerbils again thye wouldnt have that cage x when my g p igs pass i want 2 foster them and i may get my dad to cut out a slider door thing and then cut some of the divider out- if i were to get like 2 male gpigs i wouldnt need the divder so the cage would b bigger x

Is this the large cage or the medium?? Also, where are your accessories from? I LOVE this set up!! Im going to save up and try match this as much as I can as its amazing and my two boys would love it. Also, how often do you clean and when you remove the bedding from the cage, do you disinfect that with the pet safe spray or do you just get rid of the old bedding and put new in?? Thanks!!

HD Gameplay females as males can sometimes get aggressive towards each other. And more then 3 usually do fine together as long as you get them together.

I bought chew sticks for my gerbils nd they don't chew on them, they only chew on a plastic hut I got them and they're getting sores on their noses now. What should I do?

Mine get sores an there noses too. I think it's the begging I use. Your supposed to use paper with them because wood shaving are bad for them but paper us Sooo expensive for just a small bag!

You can make an "adapter" platform to attach a topper to a larger tank, I've got a guide on how to do it over on my channel if you want some ideas on how to make your own. You can also use an Ikea detolf as another option, and use a bendy wood bridge to cut off a small section for their sand bath, water and wheel ☺️

(I honestly don't know how I have missed you uploading videos so I'm catching up with them today :D ) Awesome video, your gerbils are adorable XD Their cage is amazing, they have so much space and toys :D My gerbil Daisy unfortunately passed away a few weeks ago :/ It was then that although we were told Daisy was a girl, we found out he had 'male bits' haha. I love watching gerbil videos but yeahh great video :D

We had gerbils. We got told by pets at home they were all boys. One died. The other two, Peter and spot decided to have babies. Turns out spot was a girl. We were getting ready about two months later or less to take them back when spot had another litter of eight babies! But if the first litter hadn’t came I wouldn’t have the gerbils that I have today. Did this happen to anyone else?😂😂😂

Is it possible to comfortably house a pair of gerbils in a barred cage? (I have the Barney pet cage from Zooplus) I'll fill up the base as much as I can and do what you did, add a box with bedding in (It'll be nice and deep with a bridge going in and a house buried so they'd have a pre prepared burrow, I have to try and save money so I want to re-use my hamster cage when she passes)

Wow! How often do you have to clean it and do the gerbils not have a wheel? My gerbil (on her own for complicated reasons) hasn’t had an easy start to life and doesn’t know how to use the wheel. Can you suggest any alternatives for exercise? At the moment I’m not too worried because she is quite thin so doesn’t particularly need exercise but instead love and food! She’s putting on weight nicely and is almost the proper size. I have an exercise ball/ space pod but she doesn’t really get that either😬. She pretty much just doesn’t know how to be a gerbil and couldn’t use a water bottle at first! However she can and loves to dig!

I had two gerbils, Juniper and Sage, but sadly Juniper died two years ago. Sage is still alive, although he is really old now. He turned five in May 2016. We would get another gerbil so he would have a friend but he is too old for a young gerbil. He'll probably pass soon as he has diabetes just like Juniper. Sage has had about five strokes but has been just fine the next day. Juniper had one stroke and he didn't survive that one.

I recommend an ikea detolf since it's very affordable for the size, not difficult to set up and has a lot of space! the cons are that you'd have to make your own lid and the cage isn't very high, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons imo

Amaizing! Nice dedication to the gerbils... But let me ask you: what did you put inside the rounded Glass? Bath powder? Im a little apreensive to let my gerbils do their bath alone, could they inhale or contract any disease? I've seen some videos talking about this..

I'm not sure where you are and if there is a pet store that carries this near you, but I got a metal water bottle holder with a metal strip that you can adjust to the cage so it hangs over. I'm not sure of the brand because I'm on a trip, but I can reply with it in a few days. I'm sure you could find it by looking on the petco website and searching in the small animal section for water bottles. Hope I helped(:

My gerbil scratched his eye and it bled a little, what do I do? I am also getting them a much larger cage but I'm not sure my house is the right environment. . It's quite noisy sometimes and I have nowhere else to put them but my room and the sound usually comes up to my room.
