Cleaning skulls using MAGGOTS - The right way to do it

I show you the right way to clean skulls using maggots! This is a completely natural option that works great but there are just a few things to keep in mind to get consistent results that are good. You could simply toss a skull out in the field but that will not get it cleaned like I show in this video.

A friend and I collect dead birds and have planned to use fire ant beds to clean the skulls/skeletons. But the maggot method seems much easier and cleaner. The weather is cooling down now, so we may have to wait until next summer. They will have to remain in the freezer a bit longer.

Hi Hunter. I have a Ram skull with big curly horns, I had to wait years for this old guy to finally die of old age! Will the horns just come off, unwind from the skull with this method or do I need to do anything to help them along? Thanks for great videos. Can't wait to get creative when the skull is clean.

I used this method with 4 bull skulls and worked great they also got under the caps and ate all the flesh so the caps slipped right off but one skull that didn't happen. He did get cleaned but I can not get the caps off and he is the biggest one he won't even fit in my water trough I use to cook huge skulls in. Any recommendations how to remove the caps on him?

If you had left it for 3-4 weeks would they come 100% clean? Or would there still be need for maceration? And as a side note, after 100% of the flesh is gone, would the maggots not just turn into flys and leave on their own?

I clean bison and cow skulls with maggots. Works great. I have an old deep freeze in the bush that i put the full heads in. It’s a 6’ farm freezer and I try to have it full to the brim with each batch. I leave them in there for a month and then have a lot of pressure washing and scrubbing. I find the maggots get into all the crevices very well, then pressure washing and soaking a few times gets them perfect.

I left mine over two weeks in after having boiled it. The maggots wouldn't eat the tendons on the back of the skull, and left a lot of puppae (maggot shells mid transformation) inside all of the cavities. I'm trying to use chemicals now to remove them.

Hiya from England! I have found a fox before and did the bury method after watching your video (i did skin and gut that one) but recently found a dead badger and its so large and i dont really have tools to skin it so i did gutt it but thats it…. I put it in a mesh bag and placed that in a large black bin bag and put that bag in an old dog crate. Its about 23 degrees Celsius here, just wondering how long i should leave it for? Its tucked away under a tree on my property so kind of shaded but not HEAVILY shaded if that makes sense.. any info would be amazing- also how much stuff will be sitting in the bag? Will a lot of it be eaten or will i have a mess to deal with? haha Thank you so much for these videos- very helpful! Xx

It might be the natural oils coming through. Maybe soak the skull in some dish soap / washing liquid for a few days, changing the solution might help too after a day or two, and after that soak it in some diluted peroxide. I hope this somehow helps; I myself am still learning lol.

What are your thoughts on boiling the skulls for the cleaning process?
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 3 года назад
Hey Logan! So I don't use it personally (I have in the past when I fist got started) for a few reasons. Maceration just produces a much better final product and is very gentle on the skull. I would much rather just stick the skull in a bucket to macerate of use maggots than to have to fool with a burner setup. I understand it is a very popular method but it's just not something I prefer for skulls I clean.

Hey Hunter, What would happen if instead of changing the water in the bucket during maceration you did not change the water at all but added an aquarium air stone and air pump with the heater? To keep the water oxygenated.
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 3 года назад
Well, I have actually tried this haha. It would take a LOT of testing to get the right amount of time adding bubbles to get it to work. Basically it will over oxygenate the water make both types of bacteria unable to survive and the decaying process slows down significantly.

Great video! This is the same method I like to use in the summers here in Canada. Might as well take advantage of the hot weather and bugs while I can haha I have a bit of a different question - I have a bison and a couple cow skulls that are clean, but I can't seem to find a container that is the right shape (length and wide) and size for such a large skull. I usually use liquid hydrogen peroxide (3%) and submerge my deer and other smaller skulls, but am wondering what container you use to whiten such large skulls with liquid/submerging them? Or do you just use a cream/paste hydrogen peroxide and paint it on? Thanks!
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 3 года назад
Hey Annalise! Sorry for the late reply. So I have found plastic trash cans to work pretty well for cow/horse size skulls (like you might use in your kitchen) and bins/tots for storing stuff usually works decent for bison.

I am totally same and there is logic! I feel that bones have more ”spirit” left in them. Stuffed animals are just sculptures with animal fur on top, but skeletons are more majestic. Also skeletons feel more respectful I think. You just clean what’s inside. Stuffed animals are more work and when you remove all what’s inside the animal, I think you remove the ”soul” or the ”spirit” of it as well. I don’t know if you get me st all😅
