In this episode we take the suspension components taken from the near-side of our 1973 MkIII MG Midget and remove the rust.
After de-greasing the components they were wire-brushed to remove significant rust and remaining paint and then sat in a rust removal solution (Bilt Hamber DEOX-C).
As kingpin bushes could not be immersed in DEOX-C, the axle was de-rusted using Bilt Hamber’s DEOX-GEL which could be applied to target areas; avoiding contact with the bushes.
To prevent flash rusting after removal of corrosion, the parts were sprayed with ATOM-MAC again from Bilt Hamber Laboratories.
Bilt Hamber products used can be found here: www.bilthamber.com/corrosion-...
We also start inspection of the removed brake calliper and pads to see if we can clean and service the calliper.

Jerry, with the gel you build up the coats to 3mm thick and cover with cling film and leave overnight, this prevents the active ingredients from drying out and scrub with a stiff brush and soapy water, then flush with clean water.

Thanks for that, I've not been having such good results using the gel; although I've just had better results when de-rusting the chassis in my latest video. I'll try covering with cling film when I sort out the other side. The DEOX-C bath is so much easier and has given fantastic results.

Hi, I can’t help thinking you missed out a vital stage of the preparation here. After using Deox-c, atom-Mac and before you etch primed it, a couple of coats of Hydrate-80 would have really gave you an added layer of protection. I appreciate the primer will bond to the steel, but I’m not convinced it’ll hold back corrosion long term.

Hi Jon, you are probably right I could have, and should have, added the extra step for extra protection. I did use Hydrate-80 when treating the chassis in a subsequent video (and the dust sheild); where I didn't get really clean steel after the DEOX-Gel. Since I've still got to do the other side I can add the extra step and see if I get any long-term differences. BTW, as part of the reassembly I have applied the B-H wax to the components. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@JerryMotorsport Which wax did you use? I've been filling the cavities on my restoration and used B-H S50. I've bought some Dynax-UB but haven't used it yet. I only mentioned the Hydrate-80 because 2 years ago i did the same as you and primed directly to the steel after removing the corrosion from my beam axle. I had to do it a year later, only this time i went DEOX-Gel, Hydrate-80, Electrox and then Epoxy-Mastic. So far so good :)

Jerry...can you acquire the brand Evaporust. You can use it on anything without worrying about damage to the parts. It works fantastic and you don't need different types of chemicals. Nice to see you posting again.

Hi, and thanks for commenting. I've heard of Evaporust and I can get it here in the UK. The two rust removal products I used are essentially the same chemical just in either granular form for making a bath (great results) or in a paste (good results and more effort); both had to stay away from the kingpin bushes. All the Bilt Hamber products are really easy to use and safe on hands, non-toxic and biodegradable. Very well priced too; £15 (about $21) for 1kg of DEOX-C that makes 20 litres of bath. I'm trying to post mid-month each month at the moment; work is getting in the way of my garage time.

I use both Evaporust and Deox-c/gel and find the latter gives better results and as Jerry says, is cheaper
