Thank you Chris KG7CTQ for sending me this key! Can anyone tell if it's a J38 or J37? I cleaned it up a bit, mounted it on a nice wooden plate and now it is ready for many more years of service! This is not a J-38. It looks like a Bunnell key. The spring design is a dead giveaway. It's the method Bunnell used to attach the spring to the frame. The writing on the key frame may confirm this. It may say Bunnell or a Western Union designation. The contact anvil has the exact shape of a Bunnell "legless" key. The term "legless" comes from not having long "legs" extending from the bottom of the key for attaching the key through holes in a thick desk and attaching the circuit to the bottom of the legs under the desk. The key may be substantially older than a J-38.

Good video. Thanks for the guide to cleaning. I also use a fine grit sandpaper which I fold in half and drag between the contact points to get a clean and crisp connection.

a Brass cleaner called “Brasso” is a good polishing compound, used it when I was in the army when shining brass was very important. Thanks for posting!

Very nice result! My first key was a J38 purchased in 1957 from a surplus store. Most recent key was also a J38 from a hamfest in January 2020. Love them all.

Sandpaper is a bit brutal on soft metals! There's a German made metal polish available all over Europe called Autosol (Edel-Chromglanz). Just about the best product I've ever used on any metal! It also contains a protectant to reduce further atmospheric tarnishing. (No I don't work for the company!)

It looks like a reproduction of a J38 to me - without the typical J38 base. I think the Japanese reproduction was called JJ38. I have been using a J38 that I got surplus for 50 cents in 1962. (I was 10yo.) I clean mine with "BRASSO". A trick I learned in the Army. If they don't have it in France you might be able to get it thru Amazon. I love my J38. It is great for average and slower speeds, AND requires very little maintenance....

My dad bought me a j-38 that was in a thrift store for $1 in the early '60s and it was in mint condition. Don't know who made it but it was probably ARH. Would like to get a Lionel but not at the prices now days.

That key looks like a J-38. I used a lot of Brasso, first in U.S. Navy Boot Camp Training to polish brass bells, torpedo propellers, brass nose of a torpedo, brass belt buckle (not really a buckle) and anything thing else that had a brass coating. Cotton balls, brasso, and a lot of elbow grease made tarnished brass come to a gleaming shine and sparkle.

Did you ever use Bug Juice (kool-aid) on brass?
@MoTown44240
@MoTown44240 5 лет назад
@@eminusipi The can of Brasso lasted well over 6 months. Boot Camp trainees don't have access to a store at their leisure nor do they have access to their $98 per month salary. After Boot Camp my next can lasted my remaining 3.5 years in the service. Trainees were not permitted to remove food from the Mess Hall unless it was contained in their bellies. I attended Boot Camp in the Summer, right after high school graduation, and sweating was common place. Any replacement of liquid was consumed. Therefore there would be no Bug Juice to taken from the Mess Hall. Therefore, no.

I just finished cleaning up a brass key and building a project for a telegraph sounder. It is a clock that sends out a time signal to the sounder once an hour. It uses an Arduino and a gps module to make it very accurate. Pictures of my key and the sounder project on my QRZ page. 73 Charlie, KM4ZZ

It looks identical to my two J-38 keys. A nice key but I prefer using my two Junker keys. The J-38 works well outdoors.

I have one similar to this but it has small ball bearing that hold the + part of the paddle onto the base. Any idea of how to get the ball bearings to stay in place on each side? Can I use glue? Being that they're ball bearing, I'm thinking glue isn't a good idea, but I can't figure any other way to keep the ball bearings in place on each side before putting the paddle back in

small bowl of hcl & peroxide would remove that in seconds. It's a nasty mixture though. Have worked with brass for years.
