Haven't used the number 4 #handplane for a while, some surface rust appearing thanks to the saturated UK climate. Previously prepared to a mirror finish, my preferred method now is to use a #machinist #handscraper to true up and level. The surface ends up gliding across the wood. Recommend anyone to give it a try over the sandpaper method.
I also like to take the edge off the metal surfaces with a file. Details.
