Thanks 😀 👍. Yes, I hope to do the mainspring at some point though probably next year now when the weather is better. My workshop is so clogged up with stuff now, I can barely move! Wasn't really planning on touching the motor at all now, but curiosity (and the availability of decent degreaser) got the better of me so I had a go. Shame about the governor springs and I do need to find a source of decent oil for it. I used sewing machine oil on the governor but I think it is too thin for the rest of the motor 🤔

@@mrrgstuff I understand with regard to the space issues. I have never had so much space and I've never been in such a mess. I have made up new Governor springs from the spring mech in a tape measure and clock springs . Happy to take you through my method ( a bit rough and ready) should the need arise.cheers, D

Thanks 😀 👍. Yes. It may run better with oil rather than grease. I may change that in the future. I don't think there is much in the way to adjust the motor, though I think the lower end of the governor may be in a mount which can be moved slightly. I did wonder if the spare washer underneath the mounting post was some sort of 'adjustment', but it seems unlikely. If its been moved by accident then I might need to see if an extra washer underneath one of the other gears might help

@@mrrgstuff Gramophone motors from rhe 1910,s make unfortanly a lot of noise compard to gramophone motors from the 1920,s and 30,s. That is becaus e the 1910 motor have a fast rotating gear by the speed regulator. Oil or WD40 made it a littel less noisier. The made the same noise when the where new. the speed regulator gear is mostly made of celluloid plastic and is broken or wil brake. because the aged and wear. the good part is that you can make one on a lathe with a drillhead inplace of a chissel. You turn the lathe with your hand and turn the gear in the plastic bar and you get a plastic gear with theets like the original one if the zise is good, I will make a video about it. the 1920 en 30,s gramophone motors have slower rotating gears and a wormwheel by the speed regulator. I have 4 gramophones from the 1910,s en repaird 3 of theme and 2 of the had a noisie motor en broking plastic gears. wich is turnd on the lathe. and the other one had slower rotating metal gears. he is from germany and the 2 noisie once are from germany and england. i also have 5 working suitcase gramophones from 1927 till 1938 from England,Russia,Japan,Germany. And they dident make a lot of noise. The Russain and Japanese ones where in the timet half the price of a German or English one in the Netherlands.

I have another motor from about the same time (not Thorens I have already shown) and will see if that has a celluloid gear also. 😀👍

I just bent them back with pliers. I've not done them any good, and they may need replacing at some point, but the governor does keep reasonable speed so they will do for now. Thanks 😀 👍

Thanks 😀 👍. Glad you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately I have very little information on the 87. They were apparently made from 1937 to 1941, for export only. The motors used were apparently the 794B, 27040C and in the 87A (I don't know what the A refers to), the 26590B. Columbia also did the very similar model 205 which also used the 794B. Obviously, if you are looking to get the spring changed, this can be a dangerous operation if not done properly so best to get someone experienced to do it, if you don't have the experience yourself. Hope that helps.

More to stop the crack from growing. I applied glue to the crack several times, letting it dry in-between. The glue is usually stronger than the wood so should seal the crack up. Thanks 😀 👍

It may be that the governor weights are hitting something. As the governor spins faster, the weights fly out more due to centripetal force. If the speed control is poorly adjusted the governor can spin too fast and hit other motor parts. You really need to see the motor running to diagnose and adjust better.

@mrrgstuff after some research I was beginning to think it had to do with the governor. I don't trust myself with repairs unfortunately. Too afraid to break something. I'll have to find a local Enthusiast

The motor certainly wasn't silent when I got it and it was mentioned to me at that time that these earlier motors can be quite noisy. When I tested the governor the mechanism was running without lubricant. All the parts have been cleaned and relubricated so although I agree the noise isn't ideal, at least I know the motor is clean and has fresh lubricant. There wasn't any obvious shake in the bearings, but if they wear I can insert brass bushes. There was some wear on the teeth of some of the gears, but that is not unexpected. I may strip it down again in the future and do the main spring. This was just a little service for now. Thanks 😀 👍

@@mrrgstuff It doesn't sound like a gear problem though. It sounds like metal on metal contact, like it's rubbing somewhere. You mentioned that mystery washer in a reply to a different comment I made. Perhaps that's it. perhaps it's not square without that washer and it's causing metal on metal contact somewhere? I am definitely not saying you caused it. I figured it was possibly making the noise even before the tear down.

Yes, I didn't measure the noise level before cleaning it, though it had been mentioned to me that the motor was a bit noisy, but no more so than expected of a machine of its type. I will need to do the mainspring at some point, so I may then go through it in much more detail and see if I can find anything. Thanks 😀 👍
