Welcome to the Scrapyard. Space Engineers where what you can't build, you must find.
Curious about the audio? We've been utilising Remaarn's Teamspeak plugin for Space Engineers to communicate with each other while getting positional audio without the glitching that is common with the inbuilt system :)
You can find it here github.com/mmu...

Just wanted to let you know, this series is my current favorite thing on this platform. I’m not even a Space Engineers player, but my day brightens up every time I see you upload another episode of this. The mix of building, problem solving, mechanics, combat (albeit minor), and multiplayer is truly magical.

I tried to get into space engineers years ago, but I just couldn't get hooked. There didn't seem to be a point to anything. It was, in other words, "too" sandbox-y in its vanilla state imo. But this scrapyard playstyle is the first thing I've seen that makes me want to try the game again. This seems like the element that the game was missing for me.

Personally I liked the look of broken vehicles on the plates outside. Really gave it that scrapper feel. Even if they only remained as yard art, it gave the place some character.

Palets: single connector in the middle, because what's the use of two of them, and pushed back into the palet so it won't stick out. And on the telehandler, put the connector above or even behind the magplate for dualpurpose use.

An idea for a competition, which requires teamwork. You have a bridge that has segments missing, all team members need to cross along with a small buggy. The missing segments of the bridge are lying around and need to be moved and held in position via cranes built into the bridge (no welding or building allowed). The team members need to organise and pass things to each other in order to get across.... Fastest group to have all members across wins.

For scrapping large vehicles, it would have been great to see a "Car crusher" style machine for after you picked them clean. This would keep the scrap yard theme and save you the time of grinding it down manually.

That would be perfect thematically but I don't know how stable a grinder wall would be in this environment (or if they can actually place grid-based tools, given the drills need to be salvaged). Hope he considers it.

"Fun In The Sand" activity suggestions 1) Manipulating large & heavy components with a crane/forklift and locking it down with merge blocks. (because, those critters are annoying) 2) Stacking (maybe with using mag plates) into 'impossible' shapes? Then see Suggestion #1. 3) ***Dangerous Cargo*** Manipulating 'compromised' components (large batteries or tanks). Also, see Suggestion #1. 4) Finally, 'How much can you lift, Bro?' Without counterweights, 'how heavy' & 'how high' can contestants move cargo. Also...well, you know.

Very nice series, and very fun to watch too! Also, when you make the little pallet grabber bit for your telehandler maybe make it on a 'yaw' hinge so you can rotate it left and right for picking up pallets or dropping them off more easily and that way you can also grab them with less space if you aren't aligned properly.

What about recreating Thunderbird Two which lifts its body to reveal a vehicle platform? I think you should upgrade the trailer-truck to the same scale as the crane hauler. I don't think the scrap vehicles are untidy, they give the site character.

Challenge ideas, have a large grid block with a merge block on it, you need to insert it into a structure and merge it. The challenge is getting it through the entry hole, then probably rotate through at least 2 degrees of freedom to get it to lock? EDIT: Typo, as usual

One simple way of wrangling the heavier items onto the pallets could be to simply grind off one of the concrete slopes so you have a clear drop-down step. With the pallet sat on the voxel ground up against the new cut-out, and the desired components up on the "concrete" floor, you can then simply roll them down onto the pallet instead of trying to drag them up-hill. So basically a loading dock. In the long run though; it might be best to always bring a pallet out to the flatbed when you offload and just drop the item straight onto it without having to mess around too much. Oh and one other use for your solar panels you might want to consider is to have them linked up to an event controller that switches off the exterior lights in the daylight, and turns them on when it gets dark. Not that you have to worry about the power too much, but it might be a neat aesthetic effect. Make the place feel a little more alive. As for competition events; how about a scrap & salvage race or time-trial? As in you drag in a bunch of wrecks from the wasteland, spit people up into teams and have them race to see who can tear down a wreck the fastest, while pulling out the valuable blocks, merging them onto a designated pallet, and all components deposited into a similarly designated cargo container. Bonus points for each valuable block salvaged (maybe number of points based on it's relative value?) Penalty points for accidental grinds, loose sub-grids, other mishaps, and loose components not cleaned up? Of course this requires however many wrecks you need for the event to have the same equivalent point value in the interest of fairness, but it should be too hard to wrangle that, even if you have to do a little "editing" of them ahead of time. Other than that; I guess if you're feeling especially sadistic you could build a towers of hanoi puzzle from armoured half-blocks merge blocks, then see who can complete the puzzle in the quickest time. Call it a test of crane dexterity and speed?

just a thought on the warehouse lighting (maybe someone mentioned it but if so i missed it) if you use the corner lights you can use offset to move the light itself down, if you like the light panels but they're just a bit too much you could use half-armor panels to build a faux reflector around them

Splitsie, You are probably doing this for a nicer looking video but I just wanted to make sure you know when using "grabby hands" you can move, lift and position many of the items you are moving with your crane. Just mouse wheel it away and look up to lift stuff onto your truck. I use my crane as little as possible. The only blocks heavy enough to struggle with are the large batteries and small grid large atmo thrusters. P.S. I also built a fold up ramp on the side of my truck with a mag plate that allows me to load heavy blocks I can slide but not lift. Thanks for another entertaining and enlightening episode, can't wait for another episode. Cheers.

I was creating pallets of goods to begin with, mixed electronics, mixed thrusters, and the like. But then I realised I was making everything too complicated when all I really wanted to do was have the items secure and able to be locked down. So, as I have a large collection of small batteries I'm not doing much with, I use a small battery, with a mag plate on the bottom and a keypad placed on the front of the battery for grid access as my 'pallet'. I then build off of this base with an armour block and attach my items to that, so for example I have a bunch of gyroscopes with blocks attached to the base, locked together and mag locked to the floor of my hanger. I have a stack of small hydrogen tanks welded together, a stack of solar panels welded together with blocks, and various other things tidied up but I try to be as minimalist as possible, but keeping in mind that I might need those items at some point soon. I've also gotten into a habit of grinding EVERYTHING down for parts. At a point early on in my playthrough I was grinding some things down, and then deleting the unwanted entities so that it would clear the area for more spawns and get rid of the trash, but after searching for a looooooong time, I promised myself that when I found a top tier grinder, that I'd clear up all the POI's, whether it was small grid or large. And I found a tier 4 (3 chervons) grinder last week, so I've been amassing a LOT of steel plates, so many that I think I'll build myself a fully complete office block next to my base. [edit] Oh! I've also been merge blocking stuff like crazy, so much so that I keep it on my main hotbar, and I've noticed that error with the merge blocks staying yellow happening quite a lot, usually when the merge blocks are welded up closely but off kilter to each other. The only way I've been able to solve it, is as soon as I noticed the lights staying yellow I just grind one down and rebuild it, as Splitsie does here. [/edit]

I’ve never played Space Engineers but now I’m seriously considering building another computer just to play this. BTW, Assertive Acquisitions is a great series also. Been watching episodes whilst waiting for another Scrapyard Survival episode to drop. Still think merging the trucks side by side is a good idea, a wider wheel base will lessen the chance of it rolling over or tipping when loaded up.

A suggestion for your competition would be: Connect a smallblock small cargo to an "output" by using your crane to manipulate and connect several oddly shaped conveyor lines in like a 3D puzzle fashion. It could be a timed job or even a "are you able to manage this puzzle" kind of thing.

Do an APC with sliding doors (or whichever door was so good) as armor. Should beat even heavy armor protection. Alternatively: Flyer Ferrying Service to carry passengers for scrapping: the passenger flier drops down scrappers at promising locations to do the salvaging and keep the loot from despawning, and the trucks/cranes come and pick them up after.

For the larger small grid blocks, you could set up a shelf along the back wall that _is_ a small grid, and has those items individually locked to it with magplates. Or a limpet-style pallet, that's maybe a 3x3 or 2x2 that holds the larger blocks one-to-one - though if you were to follow that to its final scaled-down form you end up with a grid that's literally two magplates back-to-back and at that point the things should just have one on the grid and be locked individually to the shelf - which is, admittedly, how such items would probably realistically be stored, being just put on the shelves alongside the pallets of smaller items; and in turn that is just an alternative to the small grid shelf. As a trading hub, you definitely need something for large grid blocks, notably because not only will you be finding and giving them to people, but you may also recieve them in turn. An outdoor yard would probably be best for that unless you want to either uproot and transport an entire second warehouse or build another from scratch. At the very least you can keep a stock of batteries, cargo containers and wind turbines, and perhaps even the large grid cockpits from the cranes which I believe could be a bottleneck for others' rovers (I can't remember if you can place control stations or need to salvage them). It's good to have a stockpile of 'early-game' blocks like those for if someone has an accident that ruins their power supply or desperately needs to quickly build something, particularly once the war for the pole gets going (On that note, can you place gatling guns and turrets? It might be worth salvaging those, as a trader). I appreciate that the insurance spam group at the very least took the effort to travel across the planet to reach your base, and build you a mailbox out of their own pocket, just to get their warranty message to you. Aside from the obvious lifting competition, your arena could also host dexterity and stability tests. Slotting large pieces of metal into matching holes in a high wall, balancing a stack of weights (many vehicle weight-lifting competitions sometimes work by piling additional sheets or block of material onto a platform, but in SE that is less effective than merging them or filling a container - however, it's very much going to pose a challenge keeping them from sliding off, thus that could _be_ the challenge), perhaps the admittedly somewhat unfair concept of a reach contest - perhaps base that one on ratio of minimum to maximum range if it's done at all, but it would at least be a fun statistic to put alongside the vehicle's unladen weight and so forth on an intro card if you make graphics for the contest. I'm fascinated to see if anyone else enters a cargo flier into it, and how such a craft will perform in relation to the ground-based cranes.

17:42 at this point why not just do ONLY connectors and magplates on top? Merging blocks are just a pain to merge everything with at this point. Or grab pallets with connector so you can magplate them to wall and leave be? This way you wont even need shelves and could place them anywhere with energy, even on your trucks if need be of transport? And by the way. If you expand your trailer it will be way more stabile than it is now

For larger blocks, you should just use rack shelfing. The handler will only pick a drill up one at a time, so just hold them on a rack instead of pallet. (unless you want to RP moving pallets around)

Regarding the difficulty in loading thrusters or other objects onto pallets, consider building a loading dock section by the warehouse. Instead of the ramp down, have it be a regular 90 degree straight drop. you can place the pallet beneath the lip and slide the objects from the higher (or level) point onto the pallet. Think like a regular loading/unloading dock at a grocer.

Clearly not a forkie. Always place the load at a 90° as its quick and easy to move around Sub grid wheels with a remote control. Fly mode/drive mode. Problem is wheels are heavy and rarely look good on fliers in se

17:50 As a forklift operator, you never want to get off the forklift. Anyone who designs something that requires the forklift op to get off to secure/remove the load needs to be slapped with a wet lake trout. The goal is to move objects from A to B with efficiency. Getting on and off is not efficient, it is slow, very slow. You should always be moving freight, if you aren’t, you aren’t.

Many times, when merging with small grid, once you get the yellow light on you just need to walk away for a moment for it to lock. I think it's them not wanting to be seen working their merge magic. (Maybe so KC Lang doesn't get jealous)?

For the inside of your base for the politics, could you add pistons to go and get the pallets, Like a vending machine. B2. Palate of batteries. Then you can add or subtract as necessary. Then hit return can I go inputs it back in a smile.

A thing you could do for the weeks on flying vehicle thing, is keep a cargo or series of small cargos with the parts. 4 sets of weeks, 1-2 pistons and a magplate. No issues while flying, and if your low on power weld the wheels up.

Could you crank up the interior lighting a little more? It's still pretty dark on RU-vid. I think you overdid it a little with the falloff adjustment.

So first off love this series and I'm always waiting for the next one! But I have an idea for more cargo, so you can put one or 2 small large grid cargo containers and put them on the back of the flatbed truck and keep them locked down, just an idea but keep up the amazing work and can't wait for the next one

Too late on this no doubt. But why not have a connector or two side by side with your telehandler with the magplate in the middle. It allows you to connect to your pallet connector, allows you to use the magplate at the same time. Failing that, you can always have the current 5 wide connector setup be 90 degrees offset from your magplate on the telehandler so you just need to pivot the head slightly. Failing all that if you want to keep the changeable head setup. You could put the connectors on the wall at a set height (can use a script to automatically set the boom to the right angle etc), use a connector to connect the heads, that way you can put the magplate head on the wall at a set location, quick disconnect. Then can do the same with the connector head. If I'm not making enough sense I'm happy to find your discord and draw up a design or push through some pain and make an example and share pictures with you. This way you can also make different heads for it, like a cherry picker head with a cockpit or something and a large platform. Finally why not make the spine of the telehandler small batteries, starting with the back, if you lift the telehandler you should be able to replace a block at a time. Also your current setup can also magplate to the wall now that your using connectors to lift them. For big blocks just have them take a singular pallet, stand them vertical, or add a connector on one side, and magplate on the bottom. Edit: final option for pallets, have preset locations with 1 or more connectors built into the floor or wall (can have let's say a "beam" 3 tall, 1 wide or 2, running along the wall with connectors at set locations), then have a connector in the middle of the pallet on the bottom that you can secure the pellet with, can easily connect and disconnect, they always align to the grind, always end up in the same location etc. If you use 2 connectors they should mostly avoid rotation issues, if just 1 you can make it look more like they are haphazardly thrown about by an apprentice.

re lighting: it's a junkyard . . . there should be, at least, two different types of light fixtures in the building . . . and probably as many mounting types. edit: i've seen a lot of scrap yards . . . yours is the first that looks like it has a maid staff and possibly a butler . . . things get thrown on pallets in whatever order they arrive unless particularly valuable . . . what to do with a drill - lean it up against a wall somewhere . . . put a transmission tower out back (you never know what might sell!)

How about a 5x10 for larger items. Anything bigger outside in the yard.
@cv368

With bigger stuff like those drills, irl you would probably see them just lying somewhere near the entrance, on enough pallets for their footprint. But you could also make a bit of a heavy load shelf looking array in the back where you can stack them and other large stuff vertically. A bit like the small grid solar panels you found on a truck some time back

I like the idea of a shot put competition. Build some sort of vehicle to accelerate and launch a dense sphere as far as possible, using a limited run up space. Hydraulics optional, catapults frowned on. Though maybe some sort of javelin toss could use that sort of design?

just realized this is a new series because of the upload so i binged all episodes real quick and i am liking this series a lot, i always love to think along with creative decisions and think "yeah that looks pretty good" even tho i did nothing xD PS. For the car park i'd suggest maybe corner edge blocks along the sides or something to resembles rails along the mag plates to make them look more like they belong instead of stand out on there own. oh and also you should totally set up a sound block to make a truck engine sound when turning on the truck, i know... i just love needlessly useless aesthetics :P

For the pallets, I used a 6*6 size using 4 small grid conveyor converters as the base. that way I can connect the H2 tanks to it and either transfer the hydrogen from tank to tank or add an O2 generator to it to fill them all. Also what mod gives the local time on the compass like that?

It was 3 am when this came out. So you should put the big batteries in the floor as the floor or in the corner stacking them up. Also why not have all 3 crane flyer and big bed but add more storage for components to bring back 😂.

Highly recommend making your ramps longer for a shallower approach going in and out of the warehouse with the tele-handler. Will definitely make things easier with navigation while heavily loaded.

25:22 - still watching, but I feel like the drill and similar sized items make sense to just each have their own pallet. Like, in an IRL warehouse, I'd expect to see a car engine on its own pallet to be moved around where it's needed.

You're good not using batteries and buttons on the pallets. Buttons consume a surprisingly large amount of power. I ran into that while designing some road barricades that could be stuck to the ground. Their batteries would be drained while just sitting there doing nothing, and then I couldn't detach them from the ground.

Why not make a drone with a welder, a grinder and a connector on the bottom so you can fly it from your rover then go weld a connector onto structures dock up, check what’s in then grid it back off when you leave, dock up and offload back int the rover Is this fully possible?

I know this was a long time ago. But for the competitions, you could play the game where you have the wiggly wire, and the loop on a stick, you then have to move the loop along the wire without it touching. Would be a good test of peoples crane manipulation skills.
