Cleaning up the Burnt C6 + Body Damage

While we wait for things to get inspected, rebuilt or shipped in ... we focus on repairing the body work damaged from the fire first. The C6 needed a good scrub down to see what we're actually working with. Definitely going to be a lot more involved for the engine bay prep given we can't use paint remover or traditional media blasting material on fiberglass. Let's see what works!

You should make the inner fender removable like on T Ray's car. Better servicability, great for a drift car.

@Jack Hoffman i dont understand you remark. First look at the remark to R4Race. Secondly she did not only put nice paint on the car but made everything up to spec. Being the first to do this youre the one to find the flaws. She went to a steep ,,learning curve,, to find it out. Hope your sence of humor (luckely i learnt how to paint) keeps you going. About the space on the compound. I rebuilt a car myself. It takes the space of 3/4 cars to have one shell and all the loose parts stored.

@@henkoosterhof5947 nope, Z06 with it's full fiberglass chassis might be different though. but with the time crunch and wait times on parts/panels/etc it likely wasn't an option at the time.

Talk to Taylor ray... he can show you how he made the front inner fender arches fully removable. then you can swap out the complete damaged passenger side vs trying to do a spot fix.

I have been involved in several Corvette Restorations. Stripper is the best way to remove paint. Stripper won't hurt it. The paste works best. After it bubbles up just scrape it off with a plastic Bondo spreader. Once the paint is off use lacquer thinner and red Scotch-Brite to get what's left of the primer and it cleans up nicely.

Collette..... easiest way to repair the burnt fibreglass: get some resin and put a little less harder in it so it doesn't set as quick, then as long as the matting is dry, you can stipple the resin on to it and let it soak in to the dry matting. It's the resin that burns away not the glass matting 😉 If it still has some shape to it, reapply the resin, let it dry and then prep the surface with a high build primer and nobody will ever know! Well, apart from the people who might have seen the fire vid 😉 we've repaired a couple of fire damaged boats using this method and never had a problem afterwards!!

Funtion first cosmetics later Cosmetics should be last on the list . Get it running get used to it in competition . Then tear down and do paint and any changes after the season. Firewalls and tunnels should always be completely sealed. All this stuff should be picked up on by tech inspection.

Start over with new fender wells They remove easy I just did a 2010 And yes make them removable Check out Taylor rays oil sump as well it’s in a way better location easier to plumb as well You should do a colab with Taylor have him help with making some parts

The broken/damaged fiberglas can be cut to remove as needed and made up with fiberglas matte resined on to fill the space( sorta like repairing a boat but not for floating!)

Robert Rohr depends how the surface looks when lightly sanded. If its just topcoat damage a new topcoat(ps 60) might be enough. If its cracked you are right. It looks like just the topcoat is damaged.

Fire extinguishers are usually packed with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) it is a basic chemical that will corrode similar to acidic compounds. It is really important to clean it off as soon as you can if you are planning on repairing a car.

Collette. A company i worked for made test units. These had a fiberglass cover. One was to close to a paint job and got spickles all over it. We used clay because that was the only treatment that smoothed the surface.

I pressed play on this video and at 0:06 pressed pause again. I need to say so badly… I was so expecting this video. I felt it deep seeing the car in flames after following all the build series, the overnights, the effort and the wait. And here y’all are back again with the same excitement and even stronger than before. That’s why I keep coming back and don’t miss a vIdeo. Lowe’s sells a fire rated caulking for homes that might work as a gasket, worth looking into at least. It’s used to seal holes in 2x4 studs and other lumber to slow fire down between floors so firefighters have more time to get there and put it out, many places it’s code now to use it.

Maybe move the colour shift a long the spectrum for a pheonix reborn type design, mainly oranges to reds and using the neon yellow you love for highlights and the interior. Best of luck with the work, I hope it all goes smoothly!

Soda blasting or walnut shells or glass beads. Less media blasting damage. Don't know if I wouldn't just section the worst of the burnt fender.

You should look for an FE-36 fire suppression system. It's a very clean system.

Yall should still do wiring harness pass throughs on the firewall. Then if the engine has to come out its one connector and the harness stays on the motor. Plus it's the last thing that needs to be sealed on the firewall

Hope you incorporate heat management wrap on your headers and exhaust, as well as do a smoke test into the cab to prevent fire from coming in.

I know you’re tired of hearing comparisons to Taylor’s build, but he removed the inner fenders and used rivnuts to bolt them back on. Makes repairs and working on the engine easier. Might make fixing the fire damage easier, maybe. Hopefully Crispy is up and competing soon. You know, Adam has a 4 rotor that would fit nicely in the C6.😉

Try a heavy duty dry ice blaster. Had one at 250 psi that would remove paint. Or go ductless media blaster.

Hey Collette, glad to see you getting after it and getting it rebuilt quick, but is there anyway you can turn the F/stop on the camera up a tiny little bit so it doesnt focus on the closet thing to it? It should help with it unfocusing and refocusing as often when youre doing up close talking:)

You might want to look into Industrial Hi Temperature silicone or JB Weld 31314 Red High Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket maker and sealant for the plates where you might expect a gap. . . O_o ?

Just thinking about it, anywhere smoke can get into the cabin is a place fuel vapour can get in, followed by a flame to ignite it. It seems like even just rubber gaskets around those holes in the 'tunnel' would have done the job. Arguably if you cut a flat perimeter flange out of reasonably thick & rigid plate you can weld _that_ to your hole in the tunnel & then the thing that comes through the tunnel (hydro handbrake, gear shift assembly) can bolt down to that with a sealed gasket. Also, testing the car with a smoke machine looking for hidden holes in the firewall seems like a good idea... While you are there, how about a motorsport style external kill switch so that first responders can cut the power (& the fuel flow) externally? Also an external control for the fire suppression system...
