In this video, I'm looking into the Clear Lake Trail and trying to figure out whether or not it's a lack of horse power or skills involved in my defeat. I'm also trying to get a better understanding of what I could have have done better.

Hey, it’s Roger down in Salida. Since you mentioned me in the video I thought I would comment. It is really hard to tell by watching any video just how steep and rocky something is and the camera will always flatten out the grade. While I watch that and think to myself that my Himalayan with a 14 tooth has climbed steeper; I really don’t know, but the best way to find out is to get them out side by side this summer! I recently got some new Bridgestone AX41 tires so maybe I’ll go find a gnarly steep trail tomorrow for a test!

Thanks Alex! 4 tries was good for sure. Although I would say “well, we live at altitude”, I’d be lying if I did not reduce my heavy breathing so it didn’t sound like a freight train on the video. Thanks for the comments!

Absolutely amazing ride on the Himalayan! Definitely jealous of those Colorado mountains! We have "mountains" out here in Virginia, but they are little baby hills compared to those suckers haha. Thanks for sharing the adventure as always - Shane

@@swcoloradoadventures Oh for sure we have plenty haha. Working on my next video right now actually of a fun little back road. No gravel involved this time, but still a fun little overlook. The Himalayan makes it that much more fun!

Great video. I wish I could get out there to ride some day. I know the go-pro doesn't do the terrain justice but I think the Himi should be able to handle it. I used to ride Moto-x, Hare scrambles and a little vintage trials, I went to schools and camps which would be my suggestion. Riding alone you did the right thing. Be careful and Best of luck.

Thanks! Yeah, that is on the agenda soon. Nothing beats real training. Gonna put on a 14 t sprocket. Likely need tougher clutch springs as well. Definitely need skills! Thanks

Rode my Harley up to silverton a few years ago. Beautiful country. I’m from the mid west and I also have a RE himalayan. Really cool bike. Great job on the video. Thanks.

Thank you Ron for bringing us along on your trek. Videography is spot on as always. Area for riding is Breathtaking. I have to wonder if you made it around and up that last hair pin at the miniature glacier...what was up ahead, and you had to come back down. Sometimes fate steps in and takes the wheel so to speak. I hold on to the sides of the arm chair viewing some hair raising situations. Keep em coming. Great Work! Have you been using the ABS coming down and have we found that it works? Stay Healthy! Ride Safe!

True Edward! Maybe this was a save. And a lesson to practice more first. The abs hasn’t been an issue for me so far. Even when I’m coming down hard, I haven’t felt out of control or surprised. Thanks again!

Just subscribed. Love your content! You’ve been on some awesome adventures with the Himalayan so far. I just watched your Himalayan review. That’s how I found your channel. I have been researching if I should buy the Himalayan; it’s an unbelievable price. I’m 6 foot 200 pounds and would have to commute on highways to get to the adventures I would want to go on. The power and top speed in the highway is a major concern for me. Has your opinion changed since your review? I remember you noted it was a con, and I see other reviewers note it is difficult to maintain 75mph in ideal conditions.

Hey thanks for that! I’m 6’ 220. If it was a flat road, it may work. Unfortunately, there’s nothing flat that I’ve really tried. I think it would be a stretch. Maybe that will be a good test ride video while there is still snow on the mountains. I could head to Arizona just south of me. Never even thought about that. Thanks!

Stunning scenery, it's hard to tell how steep the road was but with loose gravel you made the right decision by turning back. Great video as always.

Firstly I'd to say you a lucky chap to have such a beautiful part of the world to ride around. Second. I can't help noticing you dropped the Himalayan a couple of times, now if you were on a BMW/ ktm/ Honda 1000cc plus bike you probably be walking home.. thirdly you got your bike upright and carried on ( big up to durability of royal Enfield Himalayan) . Number four . Search the internet for a good old dirty smelly two stroke light as a flies fart old school Yamaha dt 175.. 👍🇬🇧🇺🇸 .

Thanks for that! I think I’ve dropped it 6 or 8 times so far. Only once did I actually have anyone with me. And you’re totally correct. The bike just keeps going. Even when I had quite a few things bent and broken with I lost it on ice. I’m also casually looking at dual sports that will satisfy my high mountain pass dreams. Probably keep both long term. Never know. It’s all part of the fun of motorcycles and finding new adventures. Thanks!

That is spectacular scenery to ride through. Unlike anything I see here in Pennsylvania. Here the forests are so dense that even at the top of mountains you seldom have a view unless someone cuts down all the trees. You're getting your bike practice in. So far I've only had to do it once in a thicket of Mountain Laurel. And a friend was riding with me so it was an easy job. But as I ride more and more by myself I wonder what I may be able to do... I'm planning to purchase a Garmin InReach Mini 2 so I can message for help should I need it. So many of the areas I ride in have no cell coverage and as a heart attack survivor I think my wife would feel more comfortable knowing that I could reach out for help if necessary. I was wondering if you carry any such SOS device? And finally, that steep part. Is your regearing that you've already done reduced the low speed climbing power? I've ridden my Himalayan up over some really steep dirt and shale banks and it seems to go even with the stock CEAT tires. The road you were attempting must be really, really steep. Or loose. Or both? Another fine adventure video. Thanks for sharing it.

Hey Steve! Absolutely have to get above timberline for those views. I suspect theres not much opportunity for that in your area. The In-Reach or other PLB is a must for sure. It's just good to be prepared just in case. I am looking at a GPS/messenger combo like the Garmin Montana 700i or the new 750i since I need a better GPS as well. Until then, my iphone has basic PLB satellite SOS communication without the messaging option. Some are unaware that is a feature. The steep part did not look steep until I was there an not getting up it. I am back to the stock 15 tooth sprocket for these trails and ordered a 14. I agree it sure looked doable. It was steep and loose and the approach made it hard to get momentum. Plus, I was tired from the lift just a bit earlier I reckon. I may need heavier clutch springs as well. It had very little tractability. It was disappointing. All things considered, I have only been riding off road a few months, so, skill is likely more the culprit here. Depending upon your footing, would you have been able to walk it up? Then again, probably not. Steep, loose gravel... 😞 But what fun getting there.😊

Heck yeah. I could have. A bunch of vehicles went straight up. Though it was much steeper than I originally thought. After the other bike lift, I may have been just a bit too pooped out to make it happen effectively. Thanks!

YOO, RON... ONE QUESTION FOR YOU MOUNTAIN NERD- AS YOU KNOW, I HAVE A HIMMY, ALSO. NOW, SINCE YOU LAID DOWN YOUR BIKE A COUPLE OF TIMES, DOES THE BIKE AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF- BY ITSELF? I HAVE NOT LAID MINE DOWN AND ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL IT HAS AN AUTO SHUT DOWN SYSTEM WHEN IT GOES ON ITS SIDE... THANKS, JOHN IN NORWOOD...

Haha! Hey John. Now, this is a question I am an expert at! No, the Himy does not have a cuto-off switch. Generally, it stalls in first when it goes down, but the last slip out on the steep bit, then engine kept running. Thats why I put it into neutral before the lift with my hand. I wanted to keep it running cause you never know after a spill if it will start again. IMO. To the Himy's credit, it has not failed to start right up and keep going no matter how hard we landed. it did shut off when I tipped over when it was upside down and downhill. But still cranked back up without a thought. Pretty amazing I think. Thanks!

First all the way. Also I put the 15 tooth sprocket back in since my ohv Trail fail. I have a 14 tooth now to try as soon as my leg is good to go (torn muscle not from a wreck). I am beginning to think I’m wanting more true dual sport performance which is not fair to the Himy. We’ll see though. Thanks!

@@swcoloradoadventures Might just need more practice. Everide had a video where he and his buddy got lost on their bikes, lots of technical riding. But I am in the same boat as you it's hard to get practice in on such a large bike. I'd love to get a little klx, xt250, or something similar.

Absolutely no shame in trying and not making it. The only ones who failed are the ones watching this and putting you down for not making the hill. Off road riding is a lifelong learning experience, the more you do it the more skills you will aquire.

Thanks for that. Also, thankfully, no one is giving me grief but myself. I do agree with you that you learn til it’s over and I just started. Never been super patient though. I just got a new neighbor that rode Moto x for a long time. I’m looking forward to having a good example to learn from. Off-road. Videos only go so far. Thanks for the support!

@swcoloradoadventures I do not know your experience level, background or aspirations but a larger bike like an adventure bike is definitely a steeper learning curve as compared to a lightweight dirtbike. In my way too many years the single greatest learning tool I've ever come across is a trials bike, with a regular dirtbike in second. You certainly seem to be enjoying yourself and I look forward to enjoying your content, thank you for taking us all along for the ride!
