Some of you said I was damaging the plant, some of you said it was going to be fine... judge for yourself!
Finding this honeysuckle plant in the clearance pile at Lowes for $5 was definitely one of my luckiest moments as a gardener, I love this plant so much and I will do everything in my power to keep it healthy.

Hey Roxanna, the best natural method against aphids are ladybugs! They can be purchased at a Home Depot or online. They will devour those aphids like crazy. Plants with umbel flowers will also attract ladybugs. Hope that helps.

It’s not Kintzley’s Ghost! Kintzley’s Ghost foliage is blue almost Eucalyptus like! Flowers are pale yellow with almost no fragrance at all, and it has red fruit in fall! Love your garden!❤

I hate to be the barer of bad tidings but I think you are going to continue having issues with the honeysuckle. I had one also and it twined along the railing up to a two story deck. The first three or four years it was great, with lovely flowers every year. Then it got attacked by aphids and they came back worse and worse every year. Spraying with a hose did not work because there were just too many. The flowers and new growth looked horrible. After several more years I gave up and cut the whole thing back and dug out the roots (quite a chore). I know you like how it looks, but you may need to rethink based on what happens next year. Honeysuckle puts on a lot of new growth in the spring, along with the flowers. The aphids will continue to be attracted to it. I'm an organic gardener so don't have any recommendations on sprays that will not harm pollinators. Aphids were really bad last year and this year. I'm having lots of issues with my ornamental cherry and crabapple in Illinois zone 5B. Also, I think what you have is what I had and it's a common honeysuckle. It can get huge and is considered invasive.

In my area aphids are very common. They appear every year, on many flowers and vegetables. For me, the best natural way to inactivate them is to use a mixture of oil and water. I use Camelina Oil, but you can use another type of oil if this one is not available in your area, it can be linseed oil (the ratio of oil to water is about 1:10 - or more if you are desperate☺)

The leaves are wrong for your honeysuckle to be kintzley's ghost. It might be a “Mandarin” variety. Yours appears to be a very light yellow orange. Your vine has standard leaves while “kintzley's ghost” has distinctive round leaves and a bush like habit as well. So, that being said I would say you have a Mandarin honeysuckle 🧡💛🧡

I’ll have to look into the mandarin one.

Honeysuckle has taken over…..my husband is ill with lymphoma. The honeysuckle took over my yard….it’s killed azaleas and anything in it’s path. He wants to trim them down, dig them up and I agree….plant small ones in the front of the house and use the place where they have been killed for garden use. I’m in central Virginia and honeysuckle just takes over! We will make sure they don’t come back! Beautiful….sweet smelling, and medicinal but not for my yard! I didn’t have time to harvest the blooms with him ill but I’m not sure I would want to after it killed large gorgeous azaleas! Completely strangled them out. 😢😢😢

Aphids - UGH! I have them this year on my Mandeville plant, I’ll be interested in what you learn on treating them. I started with the hose and squishing them off of my plant then went to Neem oil and I still have them and I’m at a lose on how to get rid of them so I can bring my plant in to over winter it.

Thank you for this video. Our honeysuckle needs trimming desperately. We live in Missouri . Found the trellis on Amazon and hubby gave it a thumbs up 👍. Right now the honeysuckle is planted with a bamboo teepee that has weathered . So….. it is time to move and update. Again thank you.

I had the same exact thing happen to my John Clayton honeysuckle. My plan is to prune hard in late winter and spray the vines with dormant horticultural oil to smother any overwintering eggs. My hummers rely so much on this vine and this summer was a disaster for the blooms! My vine is about 5 years old and never had issues until this past spring. Like you, by the time I realized something was wrong, their numbers were way out of control. I had lots of ladybugs and larve to help out but it did take a very long time and she didn't rebloom very well at all. I hope to combat this with the early oil treatment. Good luck to you and your beautiful honeysuckle!

I broadcast diatomaceous earth in my beds as well as in the chicken yard and coup. This does help keep the pests away and also helps the chickens with internal parasites. Neem oil is effective with the pests as well but can hurt pollinators so timing of application is critical. I have also made the tobacco garlic tea and yeah it smells about as bad as it sounds lol I used to use joy dish soap in the sprayer - 💛🌟💛

Tobacco garlic 🙈😩 I’m still researching for what to use that won’t harm the bees

You have a lovely garden.❤ I've heard of gardeners spraying with diluted peppermint castle soap, might help with pests. Also, may ask where you got the metal trellis your honeysuckle is on? Thank you.

Wonder if it's not Hall's Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica 'Halliana') 🤔 I've noticed that after fertilizing(organic) I tend to get lots of aphids on new growth. Wonder if the fertilizer from surrounding plantings isn't leaching on your honeysuckle.
@SoilandMargaritas
@SoilandMargaritas 9 месяцев назад
Which is weird because from what I read plants who are “lacking” on nutrients tend to be spotted by the aphids… so 🤷🏻‍♀️
