Today I review the Clew Freedom 1.0 (22/23) binding. Please note that I am in no way sponsored or affiliated with clew- I had to pay full price and this is an unbiased review.

Before dropping $500+ for these bindings, I would recommend watching Avran's unpaid, unbiased, review over at The Angry Snowboarder. He bring up some very interesting points...

Saying Avran unbiased is wild as he already hates Buckhouse to begin with. Not that Buckhouse represents clew but we all can see the co-relation

Tbh, I found Avren's review a lot more detailed than this one. I'm glad there's another unpaid review out, but Avren and TC really know their stuff. I was subbed to Buckhouse and ProCamp for a little bit, but didn't stay long as I got sick of how blatant they both are with "give me your money so I can be a snow bum"; they're both clearly sell-outs trying to live the dream while everyone else watches in envy. While there are other channels that do this to an extent they at least offer something of substance (Tommie Bennet has great instructional vids). Both of these channels basically do shallow, useless, lifestyle vlogging and promote products with little to no useful info on them.

Not a fan of the angry snowboarder. He reviewed the Burton step on. And really trashed them. Pointing out it's hard to get in and out. And you aren't faster than regular bindings. I have the Genesis reflex and I have to say that they are great and your at least 5x faster than a regular binding for stepping in, and just as fast for stepping out.

what a great and comprehensive review!! your description of shallow step in system makes perfect sense to me! It seems like with e.g. Supermatics you need to pull front of your boot up for over at least 10 inches above the board to be able to step in. What size of boots you use? I have K2s to in 10 and they seem to be right on the spot between Clews M and L...

Finally a non biased review! Seems like a neat concept but this just doesn't cut it for $500 USD in my opinion. A chattery baseplate at that price even with a decent boot would turn me off for sure. It will be really cool to see step on/in tech improve going forward. Agree with the weird marketing strategies. While busting into the snowboarding industry is very difficult for a new brand, they're not doing themselves any favours with mass social marketing and promoting their product with social media riders. Doesn't make me auto hate the product but it's tough to take seriously. Really appreciate your review, man!

I loved my first run in them (indoor slope so short run) there are a few issues with them but on the whole they're great. Though I only paid around USD$200 -- not sure they are worth the $500 or whatever retail is, but at the price they were a huge upgrade over my old bindings AND had fast step in goodness.

I am an intermediate middle aged snowboarder. I only snowbosrd 10 max 14 days a year. On piste only. No park, no tricks. My clew came several days ago and i like it so far. I dont like the screw strap adjustment and the front strap unlock in finicky as in i have to remove my gloves to unstrap the front strap as the latch is not pronounced enough. Removing the boot from the base plate takes some getting used to. I also have step ons. I like both. We will have to see how long the clew lasts. My step on boot sole front side detached from the boot after 2 heavy seasons.

I also have a pair of them and after 4 days of use I gotta agree. There are some downsides. But the benefits defiantly outweigh them. I had some issues with locking in one my right side of the back foot and it would pop out a little during very cold days. Felt like the ice was blocking the receiving teeth. But all it took was one or two aggressive jumps and pounds and I was locked it. Nothing beats not having to sit down or bend over every single run. Cheers for the honest review as a regular consumer.

@twocatssnowboarding
@twocatssnowboarding Год назад
It's vibration from your snowboard that is transferred to your bindings/boot during moderate-high speed turns. A high-end binding will generally have a base plate that greatly reduces or eliminates the transfer of that chatter to your foot. These base plates are about 10 years behind in that regard. It's not an end all be all though, a good boot and orthopedic foot insert can also absorb a lot of the experienced chatter. To me, it feels like someone tickling your foot. Not the worst sensation, but not particularly pleasant either. Really doesn't effect too much riding-wise, but something that should be flushed out for a binding this expensive! Hope this helps! Think you'll love them.

@bogdanmarkovic

Btw on the topic of harder step out...someone on yt mentioned that before pulling the lever you need to exert pressure on that foot and once lever is pulled only then lift the foot, not before. If you look at the latching mechanism you will see its slightly at an angle so the harder you pull the foot up the harder it is for the mechanism to overcome that slight angle in latch.
@TygerTygerBrnigBrght

hey, I was wondering how you were able to stack the pre-order pricing with a coupon. I tried a variety of coupons for the pre-order this year and none of them worked. If I recall correctly, the early bird pre-order pricing for last year was $370 and it was stackable with coupon codes as well. I actually have the majority of quick entry bindings (Burton Step-On, Flow NX-2, and Nidecker Supermatic), so was hoping to test these as well. Undecided whether to buy but much less tempting at $400+ price point, so may just wait for a version 2.0.
@twocatssnowboarding
@twocatssnowboarding Год назад
It looks like they may have disabled stackable codes this year. That is a bummer. Getting an extra 10% off that pre-order price makes these a really good deal- I suppose that's why they're not doing it anymore. How do you like the supermatics? I enjoyed them when I tried them, but don't think they're too much worse than clews to justify buying another pair of bindings.
@djow4725
@djow4725 Год назад
@@twocatssnowboarding I really like the Supermatics! They are a great pair of quick entry bindings if wanting traditional strap experience and good performance while using any boot. I haven't learned to step-in while riding yet, will need to practice that next time I go out. The Clew bindings look much easier to step-in while moving. I don't think I would mind the highback on boot deal and I would be really interested in getting a 2nd base-plate portion to be able to easily swap and step-in my park board. I am happy with the Supermatics but just really interested in quick entry bindings in general and would love to try all of them (only missing K2 and Clew)! hahah. I've owned Burton Step-On which I thought was really well-made and great performance, but personally had comfort issues with pinky toe hotspot pain and the Burton and D/C boots did not work that well for me. Thought about getting K2 clickers, but the propriety boot required is a big turn-off for me. I rode Flow NX-2 for almost 2 seasons and really liked them but they are wore looser than my strap bindings with a different feel, so wanted to try something new. I was actually going to pre-order the Clews for this season, but then they announced the Supermatics so ended up pre-ordering the Supermatics instead. Definitely bummed that the Clew preorder pricing is higher and no longer can combine coupons for next season. If I was able to get them for the same early bird pricing as last season, I could definitely talk myself into getting them to try out. Probably wait for a 2.0 version now as want to see how they improve these bindings in the future. Out of all the quick entry bindings I see on the mountain, Burton is definitely the most popular followed by Flows. I've only seen Clew bindings three times in the past 2 seasons and was only able to chat with one person last season about them. I've seen three other Supermatics already this season. Always great to hear what real owners think of these interesting new binding designs. I do want to thank you for taking the time to put out this type of review. One of the reasons I hesitated on purchasing the Clew bindings was that all the reviews I saw on the bindings were by people receiving free bindings and giving out promo codes, and that is definitely not really trust-worthy reviews. Very happy to see a review by someone without any affiliations with the company who who paid for the bindings themselves put out some content about these bindings. I really appreciate the content and thank you for your feedback on the bindings! Very helpful :)
@TygerTygerBrnigBrght
@TygerTygerBrnigBrght Год назад
Had some trouble clicking in properly with warm weather out east here, the snow packed in and was more like ice clumps. This made one side of a binding not lock in properly and not capable of being locked in, which isnt apparent till I started riding, so Id say def do a quick check that youre properly locked in each time. Im also getting red marks on my ladders from the red bushings at the ankle, but not a big deal. The paint on some areas of the "lever handle" is chipping off too from whatever Im hitting them on, hoping they used stainless steel for it. Otherwise, same sentiment as you, rough around the edges, but decent quality for the 22/23 model.

I have the Supermatics and like them so far. I occasionally don't get my foot lined up when sliding into the bindings which is annoying but I'm still getting use to them. I have yet to sit down to take my bindings off, so the highback thing you mentioned hasn't even been an issue, but I can see where that concern comes from. They are super easy to get out of so I am usually pulling my foot out while I'm still moving at the end of a run. At the end of the day for me, it was Supermatics vs Clew. Burtons were out the door because I didn't want to be locked into their boots. Flows were thrown off the list because I didn't want to bend over to step in every time. Supermatics were $100 cheaper and in-stock for this season and I got them. If Clews were the same price and in stock, I may have went with the Clews. Don't know haha. I think they are both great bindings and do a good job at what they are intended to do though.

For shorter runs, I liked the supermatics too. Very convenient to ride right up to the lift line and be out without stopping. I'm not in the best of shape though, so when I'm at the bottom of these 3 mile CO runs I tend to gracefully fall over and sit down for a minute and let my breathing and feet recover before getting back in line. It is totally a user specific issue though, haha. Very fun to see the step in/on innovation, though. Now we've got a solid 5 options (flow, supermatic, clew, buron, k2) that will only keep advancing in the next few years!

I have ridden these at WP during the pow days you also rode (NYE time). Pretty cold those days, and tons of snow. I ended up returning my Clew's (still waiting on the refund). Unfortunately I was not able to latch in my back foot on the outter latch all the way in the second latch. Just the 1st/fail-safe latch. Even after some strong stomps...It drove me nuts as I had some heel lift on toe-side turns. Not sure if this was because I was running max lean on the highback or if the -9 angle made it difficult to get in all the way. Needless to say, I love the concept. Just didn't work out for me.

In first review I watched, when I saw the screws I was concerned about the long term durability. Yesterday, I watched Angry Smowboarder. He validated the cheap screws and the underfoot chatter you mentioned. These shouldn’t be overlooked for the convenience of step-in. For the price, Clew needs to cover the fundamental features of a binding, rather than create a trade off on quality just for an exciting feature. So even your recommendation is puzzling. Why would you accept a lower quality ride with underfoot chatter and a weak toe strap? Your conclusion surprised and disappointed me. The ride and the fundamental binding comes first.
@WeTryMotorsports
@WeTryMotorsports 4 месяца назад
i take what angry snowboarder says with a grain of salt honestly. he's WAY too biased to care about innovation. HOWEVER, he does make good points about the cheap material for the cost of the binding. $500 for a binding that feels like its from 2002 is unacceptable. I understand they're trying to make money but come ON. These should be $250 maximum. i feel like these are OK if you're not a professional rider and require some form of accessibility to ride. i also demoed Nidecker bindings and absolutely hated them. I have not demoed Clew yet, but would like to wait to see what else they come up with. i'm rolling regular bindings until they can close the gap between the two. my primary binding is burton freestyle and secondary is k2 formula bindings. i've been riding for almost 30 years now.

Personal opinion, but those look super cheap. For $500 I expect quality in appearance and function, and every time I’ve seen them on the mountain I thought they were some random budget bindings, not one of the most expensive options out there

I can assure you that they do not feel cheap. They are super sturdy, I'm 230lbs and they have been holding up great for me.

Also, on the lack of shock absorption, if you think from an engineering standpoint you will quickly come up to the conclusion that between your bare foot and board there is about 3-4cm of material out of which great part is your boot and socks. So, if your boot is stiff AF and you wear cheap thin socks then you are screwed. Generally the the more expensive boots give better comfort. As far as socks are concerned you cant beat genuine wool socks. Drop some 50-60$ on a pair and you will see the difference both in terms of thickness and in warmth. Lastly, it all depends on how you ride. If you like carving its more important for you to not lose any energy in edge-to-edge movements, however, if you like to break a lot and plow pistes then its understandable that you would like a lot of dampening.

You're confusing cost with function. Quality socks don't necessarily mean thicker. I wear the thinnest 100% Merino wool socks from top brand Icebreaker. Also, stiffer boots generally ARE the more expensive ones because they are meant for advanced riders. Soft boots are usually for beginners and are not usually great quality.

@@treehugger420wow, to me nothing like that happened. with even my traditional burton and bent metal bindings i had issues with broken straps etc. just unlucky. adn all bindings i believe sometimes have rare issues like that. but i agree, not everrybody needs step on bindings. there are advantages and disadvantages
