In this video we replace a faulty CV shaft in this 2012 Honda Odyssey. After we replace it, we tear apart the old one and have a look inside to see what is making the "clicking." -Enjoy!

I replaced my CV shaft about two years ago, got it all put together and noticed a 1 mm cut in the boot near the band, thank you A1 Cardone. I was hoping it would be OK but now two years later I’ve got the click of death. Off to O’Reilly for warranty replacement.

I remember when mineral spirits for a 55 gallon was less than 50 buck's. Last time which was about 7 years ago it was over 300.00. With all the overhead of ownership of a garage I don't know how you stay in business today. And as you get older or any health issues has to be really extra hard. Kudos to you Eric. Around here most are going under because of the cost of doing business. Just what the car manufacturers want to. Make you go to a dealership. Just like your carb on your chainsaw. A few gaskets which don't even include the whole rebuild kit like they did 30 years ago was less than 3 buck's it's cheaper to buy the whole thing on eBay like you did. Buy it from dealership my as well buy a new saw. I used to be a small engine dealership years 30 years ago and a diy guy back then. Did car repairs till it just was not worth it anymore even back then. I saw the handwriting on the wall back there even. We just becoming a throw away economy now. It will bite us all in a few years .

True story, I once paid $27 for a regular bolt like 5/8 x 2in(albeit "case hardened"), it was for an early 90's Buick caliper housing. Actually I would have NEVER done it, it was for my cuz & he was in a hurry & believes in "the right one"(lol). It couldn't have cost over a dollar to manufacture. What they get away with is something else, they might as well just have added another zero, seemed to me like it should have been front page news. F'n Dealers !

It's now 2022 and Arthur's predictions have come true. I just waited 24 days for a genuine Honda power steering reservoir which is basically a little plastic bottle with a couple of barbed connectors. The handwriting was on the wall for a very long time but denial and a refusal to do anything about it have caught up to us. I hope all independent mechanics find a way to not only survive but thrive in this cowardly new world.

Great footage my man! And please keep up the symptoms coverage. Putting videos of sounds and demonstrations of problems really helps build a knowledgebase for car trouble we can all tap into. Great video Eric, I'm a certified mechanic in Nova Scotia (super rust belt). I had a 2007 Honda odessey touring in on Friday with a clicking right front CV. Over 300,000km so they decided to go with aftermarket. Low and behold axle clicks into the half shaft no problem but will not go into the bearing splines, the teeth on the splines were too wide or "square". This was a brand new aftermarket as well not a reman. You'd almost think dorman made it.....yup we see that garbage too! Keep up the great work, love the channel !

We had the same experience with the rear hub bearing on a 4x4 Nissan the splines weren't cut properly, on examination it was obvious the teeth on the tool used to cut the splines at factor (the tool is called a "broach") were worn out.

Great video; interesting to see the "meat and potatoes" of the CV joint. Interesting comments re: OEM vs aftermarket. Friends of mine commented on why I threw OEM pads & discs on my car, they were a little more expensive (less than 1/3rd) but the others had covered some 80k miles, so viewed it as a good investment for not much extra ££.

Great video, very helpful, had the same situation just not as bad. Which left me wondering if it was the axle or not. Seeing what you showed, I went ahead and replaced the axle and that was the problem. The bonus here was pulling it apart to see the scoring on the races. And just that little bit would cause the noise.

Just by coincidence, I had to do this exact thing to the passenger side CV of my Focus almost a year ago to this day. Due to the snow then, I hit a deep pothole and over extended the CV joint. This ripped the boot and popped the joint out. I was lucky that the CV joint was the only thing damaged, but it wasn't fun changing it in an unheated garage on axle stands.
@burgegerm7878
@burgegerm7878 6 лет назад
That seems pretty serious, I don't think that should happen from a pot hole. Was there any other issue, or was it an aftermarket part? I have a 2007 ford focus, I hit potholes quite often, and I am pretty sure I have had the front go airborne over the speed bumps and humps they are putting up all over the place. I can hear the thud when the suspension maxes out in extension. My fear is that this can eventually cause the relatively tiny strut mount studs to fail, I never thought a CV axle could come apart from that, unless something else fails first.

I don't think a CV axle should extend that much normally. The axle is designed with the suspension limits in mind. The only time I saw complete joint separation was when a ball joint broke on a Scooby Doo and ripped that sucker apart. Maybe your boot was really hardened and not as flexible as required at full travel. Strange. :/

Had the same problem on my Mazda Premacy diesel, however the boot was not ripped. Both axles had failed, but my mechanic thinks it's because the car had 400k kilometers, and it had original joints and boots, so it's just normal wear and tear. I had strange vibrations when accelerating, which i thought was an engine misfire, later on joints started clicking when turning, and we got used axles, because you cannot get new aftermarket units, only new joints, so I got used ones with both good joints.

Nice! I've changed many of these over the years and always wondered what is actually going on in bad CV joints. I guess I lacked the patience to get the darned things open. Thanks for tearing it down and showing us what's in there and how it's failing! Any ideas how to prevent these failures? Maybe pull 'em, re-pack with grease, and re-boot them every 50k miles or so? I know tight turns, especially where you need to apply power like U-turns, seem to be worth avoiding.

We see similar on RWD Honda S2000 models, they vibrate under power. First quick way out is to swap the left and right Inner CV joint assemblies (yes the inners wear on these) around, this now puts the loaded worn side on the decel side. Other way is to put CV Spacers in, moves the balls into the unworn part of the CV. As usual another great informative clip from South Main Auto....

I also had a 89 Honda Civic Wagon who had CV Joint problems. Had to replace both of them separated by 20,000 miles around 100,000 miles. Honda design flaw. Great Video explaining the guts of a CV joint.

It's also called peening. When the grease is lost it allows the ball bearings under different velocities of the CV shaft rotation, during speeding up and slowing down, the ball bearings start to vibrate which peens or dimples the surface of the races, which in turn allows more movement, and becomes more excessive until movement makes the clicking noise. That and the introduction of road grit. The grease not only lubricates, but also keeps the bearings within a tolerance of movement . Of course you knew this. Great video.

love the music for the replacement! i'm sure you probably know this but if you have a person to sit in the car while its on the hoist, you can have them turn the wheel all the way and have them press the brake lightly while accelerating to create a loaded condition

South Main Auto Repair: So that’s what happened! First time I put someone on the lift in a Mercedes 4matic to do this, the guy gave it the beans and the wheels were jerking all over the place and he said the speedometer didn’t go more than about 5 miles an hour. It never hit me that the ABS was the problem, I thought it was something in the AWD. Chris

If you do not have an option to turn it off just unplug a wheel speed sensor to set a code and disable it. Then she will give all the beans! Of course reset the code when you are done.

Man, you have answered one of my questions stemming back almost 3 decades. I've always wondered what it looked like inside a CV shaft. Thx! Great vid.

And I learned there's another style than the joints in my old Saab 96.
