Come along with Eric O at SMA as we have a look at this 2004 Honda Civic that was dropped off at the shop and the customer told us "I think it needs a clutch." A quick inspection shows that the right front axle shaft was SNAPPED IN HALF! Was this do to rust or the fact he was just learning how to drive standard!? -Enjoy!

When I was 5 years old, I can remember hanging over my father’s shoulder watching him doing brake jobs or hanging out under the grease rack watching oil changes and grease jobs. I once remember when my father had replaced the front wheel bearings and delivered a car to one of my friends dad. My friend and I went out to the car and I took the hubcap off and the bearing grease cap off and I was showing my friend what my dad had done. When the 2 men came out, my dad seemed embarrassed and put everything back but he wasn’t mad at me. I think he was actually proud that I was really paying attention. I’ve been working on cars for 55 years since. I sure miss him.

Such a shame. My father wasn’t around much so I had to learn by reading shop manuals and trial and error-plus hard knocks. I would have loved teaching what I learned to a son, but only have girls who are like their mother. But I have tried to help other guys learn and show them things the books don’t teach. Probably if I had a son he would be as stubborn and argumentative as I am-but it would have been fun for me.

My old man worked on a Bedford cf campervan when I was younger, the engine was in the cab and he left some sort of insulation on the manifold. We took it for a spin few miles later the cab was up in smoke "we laugh about it now" his face that day was memorable. Its them little things that make good memorys.

My father didn't teach me shit and he's useless. I just turned 19 and he's in his 70s. If you say something about a car hell say it sounds like this and it will be 300% wrong. My ass works at a dealership and I've already gotten an engine ready to take out and they guy took it out while I wasn't there. I'm going to do an engine swap on my neon at his house once I get the money.

In my 40 years as a Honda dealer tech I of course had many driveshafts to remove/replace. One hint I can offer is if you're going to use a tool like the one shown, put the ball joint nut back on upside down (or a regular nut) and flush with the end of the stud or slightly more. On a tough one it can prevent the end of the stud from being crushed where it is cross drilled for the cotter pin. Also, some silicone spray on the ball joint boot helps the tool slide past without damaging the boot and you should do your best to adjust the tool to contact the end of the stud as squarely as possible for the least chance of damage to it.

@@bertgrau9246 On 1960-70s Renaults the wheel were mounted with 3 lug nuts and the hub cap had retained bolt with a head size the same as the lug nuts. The full-size spare of the R16 with mounted under the hood in front of the engine over its transmission. The engine was mounted the reverse of the way we do it the most FWD cars. Easiest 4 cylinder engine I ever needed to work on.

Had a hondoo two weeks ago that came in, another shop diagnosed a transmission... Broken axle exactly like that. Here in Arizona! Though it was a Wisconsin vehicle. Sure had to give it the beans to get it unseized from the hub! And whatdya know! New axle packaging smelled the same!

Seem common with the original axle with the piece in the middle, that the reason why mechanics in my area would recommend an aftermarket axle over original if the it has that piece in the middle

@@goodguy3803 it was a seat of the pants diagnosis. They were probably just finding a way to ship it, because they had a peek and saw the rust. Which some shops around here turn people away for. Since it isn't common.

Tell 'Ole girl' , be glad your in SMA instead of Davalos Plumbing. Our stuff never smells good. My wife is just like the Mrs O , always finding ways to go to the job instead of the office. She likes the work enough that we had to get her registered as a plumbers apprentice , so much so our local inspectors stop at our jobs to chat with her . Born & Raised in NY City, later moved to "the island" left when I was 20 to serve in US Navy Nuc Sub Force & never came back....but I remember the rusty cars but dont remember axles rusting in half....maybe the steel was better in '76 when I left.....or has the salt gotten that much better?????????? Glad Im here with my happy non rusted car in Sunny Morgan Hill, CA.

Advance is probably smuggling weed in the boxes as they go out to the stores. They are probably trying to make enough money to cover there warranty exchanges on rebuilt starters and alternators.

My dad is a OTR Owner operator truck driver, you wouldn't belive the Big name company's that either someone high up in the company was into drug smuggling or the owners of the companys themselves where into it. I can name 5 - 10 company's that I know for a Fact atleast USED TO at one time move serious weight it would drop your jaw, OFC I'm not going to name drop but yeah, Its crazy

Eric: Section of a smaller diameter on a CV joint is meant to minimize Torque Steer during acceleration and steering under Dynamic load....yes...even on a 100hp Civic.

I've been seeing a ton of these at my shop lately. Civics, Accords, Fits, and Acura TL. They rust out under the rubber vibration dampener, and then all of a sudden SNAP!!! Now customer has activated "pedestrian mode"!

Civics and fits do it the most lo in fact , 2 customers of mine , a husband and wife BOTH drive Fits , and BOTH axles snapped in my parking lot in the SAME place when they were each in for the SAME service 5 months apart . lol I had to call the customer and say hey , you won't believe this but ...

Mystery solved, I found out through research that in china they substitute other products in making cardboard. One of the ingredients is hemp, which is a close relative of the Ganja!! Love your show!! I wish more shops had the term "Cut No Corners, to get around the block!!

Eric O. I am so glad you said the wheel shimmy was slow speed. I had a Plymouth Voyager that did that and I thought someone had slid on ice into the curb bending the wheel. I couldn't figure out which wheel because none of them wobbled making me puzzled. Other than the transmission going out every other year was really a good van. Now I know thanks Eric.

Chinesium is a disgusting stink of the shit plastics they use and trapped smog, the reasons cv axels smell like weed is because brand new axel grease smells like a metric shit ton of damp weed.

Sometimes certain rubber types smell of Mary J too. Maybe this is the reason along with the grease. Don't believe me? Head directly to the steering wheel covers and floor mats aisle of Walmart and auto stores

@@barc533 the axle was spanned in half, got it replaced and I've been driving the car for over 18 months now and it's been completely fine. The transmission is as smooth as it's ever been.

@@barc533 These cars are also known for snapping axles as I have come to find out. And I don't even drive it hard. It's just moisture that gets trapped under that rubber puck and rusts it through.

Chiming in, my 2012 Honda Fit snapped the drivers axle in half just like this. It amazed me, since 30 years in automotive repair I have never seen that happen. The rust under the dampener was about 2 milometers deep max, but that was enough. I thought for sure the transmission exploded when it happened. Easy fix, but jeeze it sounded horrible.

I understand this is an old video, but I'd never seen that happen either until a few months ago. '06 Accord snapped its half-shaft right at the damper. I kinda live in snow 'n' salt country as well, but not as severe as your location. Took it 15 years to rot in two. Driver happened to hit the throttle just as she bounced over some railroad tracks, so that somehow provided the right shock and torque to finish it off.

Rubber boot polyethylene off-gassing, during the vulcanization process. When those were made in the U.S. an oxidizer was applied to the boot afterwards processing which would neutralize much of the odor, the Chinese stuff though, I think they skip the oxidizer all together, probably .02 cents more profit lol. But yeah the odor can be pretty intense, you might notice it anywhere there is a lot of new, small power equipment that has Chinese tires mounted on them as well.

Nice to see an honest car mechanic that actually knows what he is doing. I’m no pro, but can fix most electrical issues with the schematics and a voltmeter. I have what I think is an ok diagnostic analyzer. A Zurich Pro. Does ok. Love the apparent patience! Funny how any electrical problems seem so basic. Once you find the proble. Lol

I've only seen this happen once before, and it was on a similar vintage Acura TL. Rusted out under the dampener until the axle was less than 1/2" and it snapped. I don't live in the rust belt, so we don't see things like that very often, but I currently work in a pretty affluent area where lots of people from out of state that move here to work for Intel, Nike, Google, etc move to. Sso even though we don't salt the roads here, there seem to be a lot of rusty cars in this particular area.

It makes me cry when I see this. I did my 88 Toyota Corolla axle. I finished the job. I drove it almost a year. Then one day I could hear crackling and grinding. 10 minutes later the car came to a halt. I thought back to when I did the shaft. When you get over confident you tend to forget things like a transmission seal. That was WAS the best car I ever owned until I ran it to zero transmission fluid. I can say one thing; that transmission must of run dry many months before failure.

Cv axles tend to smell that way because of the rubber materials used on the boot itself .

Just replaced a CV axle on a CR-V on Sunday from the same company and I agree that it did have a happy grass smell.

That's hilarious. I had a similar event happen while driving my 79 Dodge Omni, only the halfshaft didn't break - it just fell completely out of the transaxle.

I work in a large manufacturing company's warehouse and I receive the cardboard packing materials all the time right off the cardboard company's trucks. The units always smell like weed and not just a light smell. It's pungent. I think it has something to do with the corrugated cardboard manufacturing process or something.

First time I used that ball separator joint was on a 03 Mercedes benz E320 lower ball joint. I used a air gun and reefed on it not paying attention. it just kept tightening until BOOM!!!!!!!!!! I thought someone fired a gun. Almost shat myself.

HAHAHA! Nice axle! I've only seen that happen at the drag strip, and NONE of them were a stock Honda, lol. LOL! I think you're smelling chinese rubber. There's certain types of rubber from china that have a skunky smell to them. I bought a cart kit for my Yamaha generator (gen set had fixed casters that made it tough to maneuver around). The tires on it had more of a burnt skunky stink to 'em. Don't know what they're putting in their rubber over there ... :D Don't sweat it man - I grew up in the 70's & 80's - I think everyone from that era knows the smell! :D Nice Town Car there at the end! Are we gonna see a vid on that one soon?

Our belt rack area for our diesel buses smells just like weed too. Must be the EPDM rubber .

yeah also posted a simmaler comment, often its the recycled rubber/plastic, a few things i have gotten direct from mfgs in china also has an ionized smell (rain smell) mixed in with it.

Aside from being a "pothead" myself, I would consider that a good thing as hemps a fantastic renewable plant, and hemp paper is still very much at the top of the list as quality paper goes. I would personally consider this a good achievement that a big manufacturer has considered a good renewable source for their paper/card products :)

I know what smell you are referring to. The belts we buy for our Bridgeports always smell that way. I believe it is an additive in the rubber. Not sure what additive...

Edward Hugus Scotty’s fine. Is he nearby enough for her to drive in? I stopped watching ETCG after watching him do a bunch of improper procedures including setting up an axle wrong. You have to know enough to know what you don’t know how to do so I figured I couldn’t learn anything at that point.

I snapped both my CV shafts on my 2007 honda accord. I think salt gets lodged in those rubber boots and it eats the metal away. The new CV's do not have boots and have not given me any issues since. I also had a manual transmission and assumed the transmission died when it happened but quickly found out otherwise when I looked.

It happened to my 2009 Honda Element EX (AWD). Front CV snapped in half but because Element is AWD was able to get home (less than 2 miles). I was able to fix it right in the driveway the next day. It's possible to get it done without having to get it aligned afterward too. I think the design which was the issue. The oil leak under is probably the VTEC gasket.
