In this video I show you the process I use to replace the front lower ball joints in a Jeep Liberty. It's a pretty straight forward process if you have the proper tools. -Enjoy!

Going nuts trying to find out the OTC kit number, the snap on kit is like $800, I have the older OTC kit and it still works great but I would love a kit that the adapters stay in place

I always put ball joints in freezer for couple hours so they slip right in . Same with bearing races and bearings

Down in Australia I saw on TV that they actually take the bearing races and use liquid nitrogen in a tool built for that and then use a torch on the hubs. This is for the huge as mining equipment of course. That's how they get it done with no presses and they use a torch for removing the old races, sleeves, etc....

Money does talk, while driving a F-600 concrete pump rig I blew a engine at around 3am, had it towed to a Really small dealership in Monticello Fl. The owner told me it would take at least 2 weeks to put another engine into it, said plenty of farm trucks ahead of me and that was his bread an butter. I totally understood, but my boss didnt. He told me to hand the phone to the owner, the job was done in 2 days. I asked him how he got them to repair so quick, he said well to start with I offered him 3 times the estimate, plus we overnight him a brand new engine. Plus the owner gave me a huge watermelon to take home with me. It was maybe the best watermelon I ever tasted ( 1971 ). Money dosent Talk, it Screams.

Back in my dealership days, there was a recall for 02-06 Liberty lower ball joints. Water could get into the ball joint and cause it to fail. So a new ball joint that had a bead of silicone around the top was installed. Book time was 1.1 hours for a 4x4 and 1 hour for a 4x2. After a little practice, both sides could be done in 15 minutes.

We did so many of these lower ball joints back when the recall was new we could do both front lowers in 20 to 25 minutes. My personal record was 18 minutes but everything went perfectly smooth which is unusual for a Jeep or a Chrysler in general.

Do my mechanics (both dealership and independent) go to the trouble to clean up the mating surfaces like Eric does?? Somehow, I doubt it...... Still trying to figure out why the ball joints weren't replaced when they replaced those tie rod ends..................................

Only speaking for myself, I do clean the surfaces as well, and good point on the ball joints. Had a '00 F250 4x4 come in for MVI. Whole front end had been redone INCLUDING new u-joints in the front 4x4 axles....BUT they didn't replace the stupid ball joints, and guess what it failed inspection for?

I’m a retired Jeep tech. Next time you try to remove lower joint, just use you air chisel with round blunt tip about the size of your little finger. I just flip the stud over to one side and hammer on it. I never used a joint press. I still have the cup I used to press it back in with. Used short blunt tip to buzz it back in with. Jeep had a recall on these. I could do them in my sleep. 😁

to clean the flat of knuckle/bore a few cup wire wheels with diameter close and oversize works well. put in small drill/right angle cordless, whichever fits best.

The extra nuts in the ball joint kit are part of the break plan. The gal packing the parts in the box puts in extra nuts so that she will run out sooner, causing the supervisor to pull out his hair and giving the gal some break time while he goes in search of more nuts and berates the supply guy for miscounting.

This is exactly what I needed, I’m about to do this job on my ‘09, I think it’s pretty similar. Every other video shows them disassembling down to the knuckle. Awesome video sir Liked and Subbed, I'm getting ready to replacing upper control arms, lower ball joints, swaybar links and probably the tie rods on a 05 liberty and this helped alot. I probably will have to remove the whole knuckle for that. Not sure if I should just change out the struts while I'm at it.

Chrysler got those nuts from AMC, because my 87 XJ still has half of them. (Uses a chisel to remove those caps off.)

If you were sending it into space then you would probably install the pin the same way you did in the video. At least in military aviation this is known as the "Preferred Method" and going around the sides is considered the "Alternate Method". You only use the alternate method when the bolt's position or shape does not allow the primary method.

Eric: According to my wife, it's your fault that I'm slowly expanding the collection of tools in my home shop/garage. I have not previously had air tools but the prior owner of our new house left behind an 80 gallon MADE IN USA air compressor. (Yes, intentionally. He did not want to move it.) Using air tools can be addictive !! EDIT: I forgot to mention, I got a "whizzie wheel" yesterday. I'm assuming it's "whizzie" and not "wizzie", which suggests "wizzing" which is probably not good for a family-friendly channel, even if it makes you pee a little.

Thank you, thank you. Was able to do myself once proper tools were gathered. My comments: Things wear out if not serviced or worst yet, not serviceable. I am 2nd owner of 05 Limited with 132k. There was a recall for lower ball joints in 07. After giving the vin to 2 different local dealerships, they said recall was shown to have been performed June 11 2017, however I was not told where. Yes I asked, "My computer does not say". Nice answer. Computer speaker maybe turned off. Neither of my "recalled" ball joints had a grease nipple in them. Yes, after cleaning them there are exposed threads on the TOP. BOTH SIDES NO grease nipple. Open. No wonder the computer can't say what dealership service employee idiot replaced them. Entire service department not knowing or caring. OK, not all of you guys. Not much money coming in from vehicle owners for recall work. Some service departments just have no conscience. Now have replaced both sides with MOOG units with accessible grease fittings as shown in this video. Will be replacing more front non-serviceable and rear suspension parts soon. THANK YOU to ALL RU-vidrs who make watching so rewarding for us who just need a little guidance. Thanks Eric.

probably schmutz in the control arm bore and stud not fully seated or the nut wrongly sized instead of the stud drilled wrong. the rubber boots are another story.... one never knows though, as I don't replace ball-joints on a daily basis. so no offset holes yet. nothing would surprise me though, probably long sold to china by the demonrats

Looks like that liberty hasnt had the recall to install a heat shield for the lower balljoint... That was Jeeps way of fixing crappy lower balljoints. Those are good ol Jeeps. Easy to work on, last along time if you take care of them, and no abs or any crap to mess up.

Best bolt breaker juice 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF or automatic transmission fluid. Make sure to do it in a sealable metal or glass container as the acetone is prone to evaporation and eating at plastic containers.

I see the steering tie rod end was also new. Makes me wonder why we don't R&R the upper ball joint at the same time and be done with it. Do these not fail as often, perhaps because the boot lasts better up there, out of harm's way?

Slip an oversize socket over the stud and driver as a sleeve to keep the stud from slipping off the press cap. time stamp 4:54

@@throttlebottle5906 it had absolutely no oil when I went to pick it up. But I got if right after about $250. Valve cover gaskets are a must on the 04 liberty with 3.7..

Great video the socket pound out no glasses professional, like the cut off wheel idea, I think the zerk fitting should have been in front for easy access in greasing and not to be interfered by the caliper. All good though.

Be careful how you align the grease fitting, it could end up behind the steering stop and you won't get the grease gun to connect, like mine. I would just align them to the front and not worry about the boot orientation.

Too bad it's necessary to issue disclaimers - double-clicked torque wrench, cotter key bent the "wrong" way, Using the cutoff wheel "improperly." I know these are for the armchair mechanics who've never worked on a vehicle up here in NY state (I'm near Syracuse) to short-circuit their objections. There's the "book" way of doing things, and there's the way that works, which may or may not include some of the "book" procedures. It's even more important when you are doing it as quickly and efficiently as possible because you have dollar bills sitting in your parking lot waiting to be deposited in the bank. And you military helicopter mechanics, it's a Jeep being driven in a foot of salty slush half the year. You get paid by the hour or by the week. Eric is paid by the job. Big difference.

You would be a great automotive vo tech teacher, I'm 74 and I still remember my auto class (thats when they had that class in High School) Of course you would probably go broke. But after all these years I still remember Mr Stellatella my teacher. Learn a lot from that man

Do you need an alignment after ball joint replacement? Can you get a good alignment at a tire store?

HARRISBURG HAWK, yes! An alignment is only as good as the tech and equipment that do it and whether he takes the time to make it right. Anybody (almost anybody) can speed through one and make it “within spec”.

Love your videos man. just curious of your opinion of your new 2 post lifts you have after you have used the for a while. I have older Atlas 10,000lb lift and am considering upgrading . I have found that with the 2 piece arms i am having more difficulty safely lifting some cars do to needing perfect vehicle placement in order to reach all lift points at same time. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same jeep and same year. My oil pan gasket is leaking. Is it possible to fix it without removing the engine? Is possible to remove the motor mounts and lift up the engine?
