Hello again, today we are looking at the huge amounts of copium taken every day by conservatives in the UK & the US as they talk about climate change. This includes denying it exists, denying it is caused by humans, and denying government regulation will fix anything.
We will be tearing apart a terrible Ben Shapiro take, looking at the UK's Tory pundits and analysing the way Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain have been approaching the issue by blocking streets in protest and generally holding street parties that look like Burning Man.
I'll also be critising the way the media has been participating in false balance by platforming denial, and pushing the blame onto the consumer with 'carbon footprint' propaganda, all of it funded by right-wing libertarian think-tanks, and the Koch Brothers among other oil barons, of course.
And then, we shall be asking, well, how do we fix this? Is there a solution? Has neoliberalism doomed us all, or is there hope? Does Jeffrey Bezos have the answer?

First of all I just want to thank everyone for the lovely comments. I’m so lucky to have been able to build a 100k strong community on this platform this year - you've all helped me be able to leave my day job and talk about politics and scams and make dick jokes full time which is absolute madness. Thank you. Clarifications, comments & corrections: There have been a few comments questioning my decision to criticise Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain, but then call on people to join them later on in the video. I understand where the concern comes from so I just wanted to address why I made the video in this way. XR and IB are basing their current actions on the belief that civil disobedience will work. No doubt this has worked in the past. When Emily Davison threw herself in front of that horse in 1913, we understand why she did that now. Back then, all anyone probably cared about was their precious horse race that got ruined. But in 2021 we’re playing an entirely different game. Capitalism is stronger than its ever been. We’re up against billions and billions of dollars of corporate lobbying. This is why I believe it’s only people in their millions who can beat this system. A few people blocking roads are too easy to ignore (and the UK government have already passed new laws recently which allow them to legally arrest you even if you LOOK a little “protesty” in response to IB's actions). The relatively small amount of people I might be able to convince to join XR/IB by pretending that I think they’ve been doing a good job up until now will barely make a dent. This is why I wanted to use this small platform I have to add something different to the conversation - that I believe movements like XR need to heavily rethink the way they market themselves. And this isn’t just the climate movement. This is all leftist movements. Appearing overly emotional on TV does not get you the millions you need. Appearing on TV as a character a reactionary can easily call a ‘crusty’ will not get you the millions you need. Yes, they’ve also done some other protests that did not appear this way, but the media doesn’t care about those ones because there’s not enough people who care *in general* yet. The first thing people think now when they think of XR is dancing hippies in the street and people crying or storming off on TV. XR groups will consistently ‘disown’ certain actions of their fellow members in other splinter groups. This should never have happened from the beginning. The right are consistently winning the culture war because their messaging is strong, simple and appears united. The left needs to really take this into consideration if they ever want to get anywhere. Re: Australia's Carbon Tax - a few people from Aus have pointed out that rather than the rise in bills it was the demonisation of the carbon tax in the Murdoch owned press that successfully killed it off in the end. I guess my original point that it didn't work in the end still stands, but my Aussie viewers pointed that out so I stand corrected there thank you. Re: voting green - I understand this will not be plausible in many places in the world, that's why I said 'if you can'. Where I live Labour have a very strong hold on the constituency so I can safely give the greens a vote. Not that I love Labour, but the Tories are not getting in. Many people see this as 'throwing your vote away' but it can actually go towards pressuring the 2 main parties to be more 'green' if they see they're losing votes to the green party. And even if you don't intend on voting green, you can say so in the polls if you want to pressure parties to become more green. There's also a lot of 'voting won't work' and very pessimistic energy, and I get it, honestly I feel the same way a lot of the time. But I'd rather die knowing that I at least did something, than watched the world burn down around me.

You mentioned that the Carbon Tax was unpopular because it caused electricity bills to rise in australia, but it was actually because of an enormous scare campaign by the Australian media which is almost entirely owned by one billionaire who has an outsized influence on Australian elections. When the carbon tax was repealed, my electricity bills didn't drop at all, they actually continued to rise, but it wasn't an issue any more because every channel wasn't blaming it on the carbon tax any more.
@cynicalpenguin
@cynicalpenguin Год назад
Even if it was unpopular because people's bills were going up it's like, yeah that's the point? It's like adding a carbon tax to international flights and people getting upset because it's now more expensive than getting the train. I heard that some Aussie companies actually wanted to keep the carbon tax because it forced them to make changes to their electricity usage and ended up saving them money, which is exactly the way it's supposed to work, for consumers you just have to balance it in such a way that people only need to eliminate their frivolous energy use, like turning the thermostat down a couple of degrees, switching the lights off and so on. Perhaps after that you incrementally raise the threshold to incentivise people to change their habits but give them time, with the caveat that you need investments in the alternatives. You can't carbon tax people for driving instead of getting the train if their town doesn't have a railway, for example.

Well, it's still the correct thing to do. Because meaningful climate change (when it's done correctly aka collectively via governments imposing rules on corporations) will, ultimately lead to the same thing. I think something some leftist activists tend to be willfully ignorant of is that, yes, it's a systemic problem and the burden should be on governments and corporations, *but also* when that's being done correctly, it will mean the same or similar sorts of societal changes that you can already do right now, on an individual level. It will mean that governments will restrict car driving and disincentivise suburban single-family homes, it will mean shipping unnessecary stuff all across the world will have much higher tariffs on it, it will mean rules restricting the amounts of new products a company can come up with. From a consumer perspective, right now people say "don't drive so much", "by seasonal and local products", "don't buy every new iPhone that's released". What many leftists will have to come to terms with is that their idea, to put the burden of all of that on governments and companies, is correct, but that this will _not_ prevent these large changes in our lives, it will only mean it will be the governments' job to provide the framework for it.

The people she talks about in the beginning are funded by fossil fuel industry interests to sour public opinion of climate activism. But you'd also think that legitimate climate activists would have learned that catastrophizing doesn't work on the general public and just makes them look like insane doomsayers and give Ben shabipo free talking points. Even under the worst estimates the world isn't going to end, humanity won't die out, everything will be... relatively okay. But the thing about climate change is that it's already made things *unpleasant* and they'll only get more *unpleasant* every year. You could get more traction with pointing out "this year we had five days in a row over 100°F. Next year it might be six. Year after that, seven or eight." Instead of doomsaying about things people literally can't imagine or have no knowledge of, you need to address their lived experience and use the data to inform them what they're already experiencing is only going to get worse.

This was written by a UC Berkley Physcist (whose name I've unfortunately forgotten) and he said the main reason as to why so many people don't believe the climate science anymore, is because they have been bombarded by decades of "doom and gloom" climate predictions. These alarmist headlines generate clicks, but obviously, if they don't come to fruition, then people see it as "boy who cried wolf". A couple of incidences that comes to mind. The first is the Glacier National Park in America, where there were signs saying the Glaciers would disappear by 2020. It's 2022, and the Glaciers are still there. In 1967, there was hysteria surrounding a famine that would arrive by 1975. In 1970, there was a prediction the world would enter a new ice age by the 21st century. In fact, I remember that being the dominant narrative until "An Inconvenient Truth" rolled around. Suddenly talk of a new ice age was replaced by global warming. So when you have all these catastrophes being spouted everywhere, but don't come true, obviously the public's trust in the science (even if the science didn't produce such predictions) will fall. The next part is the IPCC being a government funded organisation. It's no secret that most organisations that receive funding, will try to undertake work that guarantees future funding. So conspiracy theorists will use this as justification that the IPCC and similar organisations are biased towards a certain angle to ensure they get future funding. Note: I'm not debating about climate change itself, I'm merely offering my two cents as to why there are people who think there's some kind of conspiracy theory going on.

Small correction on Australia's carbon price. It was repealed by a change to a conservative government and was lobbied against HEAVILY with expensive commercials by the fossil fuel industry and miners. Two subsequent reports on energy prices revealed the price hikes were the distribution industry and energy retailers were "gold-plating" the infrastructure (ie building substations and powerlines that weren't actually needed) in order to get government approval to increase prices. Those same industries are now highly SUPPORTIVE of a carbon price as it will encourage some certainty with investment on a global scale.

The had a couple of not so inspiring spokespeople, the whole glueing yourself to art didn't really work either and now they have stopped blocking random crossings in Amsterdam, but they havent stopped road sit-ins altogether. As a matter of fact their most successful demonstration is one which has become reoccurring and growing in size everytime: blocking the A12 highway in The Hague that runs right past parliament to ask for the end to subsidies to the fossil industry. This started with about 10 protestors on the road and has now grown to thousands the last time out. Really shows how having a clear goal and message, good spokespeople and a nice backdrop can help garner support for this cause, which is needed of you want the general public to not completely despise you because your being an inconvenience to them.

Recently that same group went out as just over 1000 strong and marched until arrest to stop the government green lighting new fossil fuel projects. Each protester was arrested on average about 7 times and in the end there were about 9000 arrests made. It completely gummed up the legal system and now the Netherlands have completed stopped all new oil, gas and coal projects going forward.

Everyone criticises XR for their civil disobedience action, and completely ignores the fact that it works. 600 brave protesters decided to march to arrest and this lead to their demand being met. The demand was for the government to officially declare a climate emergency. This was ignored for years before the lock on strategies were used. I went on Fridays for Future marches and they did absolutely fuck all because we walked a preplanned route that was easily ignored. Even walking with that march at the age of 15 I knew that it was a completely useless thing to do. Insulate Britain didn't work because it didn't target the mechanisms of the state. This is where JSO will differ. In the Netherlands, climate activists marched until arrest for 2 weeks. They were only just over 1000 strong, but got about 9000 arrests due to people being arrested multiple times. The Netherlands have now agreed to not fund any new fossil fuel projects going forward. The nonviolent disobedience worked. It actually worked. Just Stop Oil has the same goal, and marching in London to arrest this November to overwhelm the police will force a government reaction. It worked for XR, and it's already forced banks to divest from oil projects and already meant that all political parties (except the Tories) to agree to the demands. Waiting for the next general election to "tell the polls you're voting green" is going to do absolutely nothing.

@@keirfarnum6811 CEOs are as likely to take responsibility as "the little people". Which is to say, neither generally does. I've always found the notion that there's some big divide between the rich/poor in terms of moral character to be rather silly. Give most poor people money and they'd behave exactly like the rich do now and vice versa. Obviously the person at top has more power and influence but that doesn't mean the guy at the bottom should have free reign to be a bad person. The CHAZ is the perfect of that. All the people in the CHAZ talked all that stuff about how cops are so horrible and corrupt but when the CHAZ was established and cops were pushed out what you got was some of the righteous citizens of the CHAZ filling the void left by the police and behaving EXACTLY like the corrupt police they so hate. I guess my tl;dr being: The world is screwed. Everything is hopeless. There's nothing anyone can actually do on a macro scale because there's no way to rid the world of corruption. So give up on the macro and focus on the micro. What you and I and everyone can do is try to be a good person on an individual level. That's why "personal responsibility" isn't a bad thing. This is of course it. In the last thirty years we have managed to bring the number of people in abject poverty from two billion to a bit above five hundred million. Now as they enter the world economy (we are moving from a world of about two americas to twenty americas in only a few years), they will each start to need about fifty times as much energy as they did before. So as with the refrigerators installed all having freons, it seemed insurmountable, and yet the ozone layer is recovering nicely. These new people coming onto the scene will need to solve many problems, among them how to join the world energy econonomy, when the wealthy nations are removing the easy sources of energy those countries used to industrialise. So there will be an incredible amount of knowhow needed throughout the world to make this possible. If we do our bit, we will need to release an unimaginable amount of creative energy to solve these problems locally, as the impact of the climate change will always be needed to be managed locally. But yes, I believe the analogy will hold.

@@martinmuller3244 the reason the Montréal agreement worked, was because it had very good mechanisms built into it: 1) the treaty itself would not go into effect unless a certain percentage threshold of governments ratifying it, as well as certain large world actors. 2) the tools used to enforce the treaty were very effective. Banning the sale/trade of fridges using CFC gasses makes it so the demand for these types of fridges diminish almost instantly at a macro level. So, over time as old fridges get replaced, less CFC gass enters the atmosphere. As long as the Ozone layer could handle that transition, it would be fine. When it comes to Climate Change, the rules of the game changes significantly. Climate security is a global public good. Fridges are not. You can't use the same simple tools as in the Montréal agreement (or the agreement that forbade ships from using fuel compartments as ballast chambers). We don't have a way to enforce agreements about climate change at a supranational level, and the nature of Climate Security as a global public good makes it very unattractive to produce for nation states.

One thing I'd add, that's critical to the denialist comments on Chinese, Russian, Indian, etc. pollution, is that the United States has signed massive economic agreements with these groups, which work to essentially outsource our industry. So, we can claim we've actually been reducing emissions, while conveniently ignoring all the emissions generated on our behalf. Otherwise, great video.

Last week I was reading an academic journal article from the 70s about responses too climate change for a seminar in one of my renewable energy modules. It was so depressing reading it, the author was very optimistic showing how easy it would be (with even 70s technology and with their Conservative predictions for energy efficiency improvements) too reduce our carbon footprint to managable levels, they thought it would just be cleared up like the ozone layer, DDT etc. It's so disheartening that we are 40 years later and have not even completed stage one of their recommendations, which was literally just fixing infrastructure and refurbishing power plants including adding recapture technology. I.e. a wind turbine or Stirling engine in an industrial chimney. They thought that would be naturally just done. Obviously we are not too late we have time but we do need to act quickly.

People still denying what's happening is so massively frustrating when it's so extremely obvious if you just look. You don't need to go to Bangladesh either; I'm a farmer in Sweden, and we're suffering the consequences all the time. Draughts used to be something that happened a couple of times a century here, but recently, that has changed: we've had draughts in 2018, 2022 and it's shaping up to happen again now in 2023, with harvests being 1/3 of normal at best. Not only that, when it's not extremely dry it's the opposite, and extreme rains makes farming more difficult or in some places impossible. Southern Europe have had extreme draughts this spring, with farmers going out of business at express rate, and now suddenly there have been rains at the levels of tropical monsoons washing away both crops and soil. In the US there has been draughts, storms, extreme cold and so on that has also hit agricultural severely. And this is the effect of half of the projected temperature change, when we see the full effects food issues will not only be an issue in the developing world, we will have issues feeding the population of Europe and the US as well. We really need to focus all our efforts on mitigating further effects and to develop farming methods that will work in the future, radically different climate and we need to do so starting years ago, and still people deny this is happening. We as farmers are doing what we can to adapt, but farming wasn't something you got rich from before, so our financial ability to deal with these changes are limited and we all need to eat even in the future.

As a Swede I can only echo your observations. We had a very hot summer at the beginning but it's been constant rain on the west coast with low temperatures since the end of June. There have also been regular floods around large rivers. I'm so fucking angry over the election results with people voting on the basis of empty promises for a government that's piling back on sustainability. You'd think covid and now the war in Ukraine would finally make people realize that the way we've been living is not going to contact forever, and the only way to create change is to vote for people that want to push for it. I think it's so sickening how so much responsibility for sustainability has been pushed onto the individual and while we must certainly change the way we live, individual contribution is so dwarfed compared to the effects of global industries have, especially the fossil fuels industry. These industries even think the melting of the ice cap is good because they can exploit hidden shores underneath the caps. I don't know what we can do because it's very apparent that the ones who could have had the most impact are not interested in making the necessary changes simply because it ruins their ability to run their business. The oil industry knew about anthropogenic climate change during the 70s already. Imagine if we had acted then, and violently so. It would still be bad but nowhere near what we are about to face now.
@Volkbrecht
@Volkbrecht 10 месяцев назад
Not a lot of people are actually denying climate change, not when they are honest to themselves. The real question is: why should I be the one to give something up? Can I even contribute in any meaningful way, or will I just increase my personal misery while my neighbors, who don't care, keep going as they always have? The issue is that all of us, especially in the developed world, would have to restrict ourselves. Basically burn half of our paychecks. Who is going to do that? Of course, nobody is going to admit that. It's not generally socially acceptable to admit that you'd rather let the world burn instead of decreasing your personal comfort. Much easier to ridicule science. The problem I have with all of that: human nature has been researched at least as well as climate change, if not better. If we were honest, we could have admitted to ourselves decades ago that stopping climate change by getting people to voluntarily consume less is not a realistic option. Unfortunately, long term strategies to cope with that knowledge were not implemented enough. Germany for instance has implemented regulations for building insulation in the 1990s, but we forgot about the heating until last year, and we never made any attempt to touch the german holy grail: cars. There is an EU wide exhaust reduction legislation in place which will make combustion engines technically impossible to sell even without the 2035 ban, but not a lot of european countries have improved on public transport or cycling infrastructure in a way that would set incentives to no want to own and drive cars. Even with "green" electricity, the carbon footprint of electric cars will be outragous as long as everyone feels they need to have one, just to park it somewhere for on average 23 hours per day.

@@Volkbrecht You're talking about solutions, which is great and I do agree there is a great challenge in getting people to accept the changes to their lives that are necessary to meaningfully alter the downward trajectory. But, there is still a not insignificant number of people who are vocal in the discourse that reject the very existence of man made climate change, and that's what I'm expressing frustration with. As for the issue you're describing, sadly there's only three ways this can unfold: either we voluntarily change our lifestyles drastically, possibly with reinforcement by government incentives for positive actions and consequences for negative ones; or we don't change and suffer the consequence, which will be the largest and most transformative event in human history or lastly, governments will be forced to turn to authoritarian methods to enforce change. There's this kind of mediocre movie with Keanu Reeves from like 15 years ago called "The Day the Earth Stood Still" that has a scene I come to think of often when talking about this: The aliens who have determined mankind needs to go away to save the planet have had a (that we get to know of) spy planted here for a long time and he has observed that mankind is amazingly inventive, creative, energetic, loving and ambitious, but somehow, despite all our abilities and virtues and despite knowing perfectly well what is going to happen, and having the option to make changes to avoid it we are still somehow incapable of doing what's necessary and this is incomprehensible to him.
@bewing77
@bewing77 10 месяцев назад
@@Kamishi845 The pushing of responsibility to individuals are in line with the neo-liberal mindset that still rules the world, which is a very over-optimistic belief in the ability of markets and capitalism to solve any issue where the hypothesis when it comes to climate change is that as people wants what's good for the climate they will only purchase goods and services from corporations that care for the climate. The issue of course is that it's impossible for each individual to understand what the corporations are actually doing, especially since being "climate friendly" has become a marketable virtue and businesses thus are incentivized to exaggerate what they do for the climate and to hide away the less positive aspects. In many ways it's identical to the mythology among right wing libertarians that so called "voting with our wallet" is a better way to implement democracy than electoral democracy. This of course ignores the enormous imbalances in resources, information access, public influence, dependency on essential goods and so on that exists between the individual and large corporations. Some of the proponents of the current system believe that we shouldn't worry, because free market capitalism always leads to optimization of resource use, which includes time and they argue that the market will act once it becomes absolutely necessary to act, and once it does it will be very effective in solving the issue. This of course ignores the fact that individual corporations may very well continue to make profit well after a total climate catastrophe has begun, that those that has to act will act only to the extent absolutely necessary for themselves to prevail and, most importantly, that the longer we wait, the worse it will get: both in the sense that it will be a much worse experience to live through the changes necessary happening over an extremely compressed time period, but also because more drastic measures will be necessary. Like you said, if we had started to act 50 years ago this wouldn't have been such an insurmountable obstacle.

@@bewing77 It's actually fairly simple to grasp, when you thing about it evolutionary terms. In our modern societies, we practice female sexual choice, motivated in large parts by socio-economic status of the males. People might claim that they care about the planet, but what they mostly care about is getting laid, and once they grow up, getting married and starting a family. The rest follows logically. The only way to change that dynamic would be to tie status to environmental achievements. But I'm not so sure that is even possible. Because for that to work, the rewards would still have to be tied to percievable differences in personal wealth to make the strife for them worthwile. Failing that you'd get just another variant of communism, which, as we know, cannot work exactly because of the disconnection between personal achievement and material status. But achieving that would mean that we're back in the material status race, which is where we started. Not sure how to solve that, to be honest.

The problem is that ideology and political identity are about personal ego rather than actual progress. You cannot solve global problems from within narrow tribalistic chambers - it will require COOPERATION AND COALITION with people who do not share your -isms. The people who actually do the policy work of reigning in corporations are not “socialists.” Neither are the engineers doing carbon capture and sustainable energy, or the regularity committees, or the urban planners. Neither are the unions, for that matter. It’s easy and fun to be oppositional to “the system” but it’s also pretty reductive and childish. As long as young people care more about wanky philosophy (and influence culture) than they do about actionable policy, nothing will change.
@amandap9332
@amandap9332 7 месяцев назад
@artlesscalamity348 that's on purpose. It's designed to make people THINK they are changing the world while generating no change at all. Adopting that group identity as our own is very human and predictable. My husband says "everything we need to know about the world is in our Miranda rights. Everything can and will be used against us" We have created a world designed to incentivize all of the worst aspects of human nature and suppresses the best ones. The monetary system rewards greed and cruelty and punishes altruism and honesty. (Despite this, most humans STILL behave with altruism and honesty most of the time. Even though the news wants us to believe otherwise) And then uses the incentive system we deliberately created to shame those that succumb to the temptation of the incentive system we intentionally created and simultaneously shame those that didn't for not succumbing and being poor. We created money, made people need money to survive, then shamed anyone that either didn't succeed enough or succeed too much. Just keeps us infighting and unable to collectively act. Because money makes us not a collective, it makes us individuals struggling to survive on our own within our larger society. Money hijacked our incentive system and created humans that would perpetuate its existence. I realize that sounds like it's an entity of it's own. I don't mean it that way. Really, it's us humans that treat money as supreme ruler of all, and therefore make that the reality we all live in. And now, the monetary economy doesn't serve humans. Humans serve the monetary economy. We live in service to an inhuman construct. And somehow expect it to behave humanely. It blew my mind the first time i saw it this way. And I still have a hard time realizing others don't. It's so painfully obvious to me. Anyway, I'm rambling now. I'll finish up by saying, end the monetary system entirely and permanently. Adopt a natural resource based economy instead. And finally move on to new and different problems to solve instead of fighting over the same things over and over and over again that we have been fighting over for more generations than I want to contemplate.

Is usually better to sidestep the argument and just go for the throat, I flatly stop the conversation and ask them why they need to lie to make an argument and make it personal with them as individuals. It isn't about the topic at hand when someone lies to make an argument, there's something else going on. Like the need to be right, or tribalism of some sort. Even if you proved them to be wrong they wouldn't change their overall stance and just move onto the next topic. Easier to just nail them down as being a liar.

If anything, the predictions have been less than the reality. Which is a sad fact because it's the result of climate scientists giving the most optimistic predictions they can because otherwise people just call them hysterical lunatics pushing an agenda. Not that it's made much difference on that front. The reality of the science is even worse than the predictions.

@@christopherjohnson9167 Do you often tell people to read 1300 page reports? Or are you talking about the 150 page technical summary? Here's an extract from the technical summary: "For global climate indicators, evidence for abrupt change is limited, but deep ocean warming, acidification and sea level rise are committed to ongoing change for millennia after global surface temperatures initially stabilize and are irreversible on human time scales (very high confidence). At the regional scale, abrupt responses, tipping points and even reversals in the direction of change cannot be excluded (high confidence). Some regional abrupt changes and tipping points could have severe local impacts, such as unprecedented weather, extreme temperatures and increased frequency of droughts and forest fires. Models that exhibit such tipping points are characterised by abrupt changes once the threshold is crossed, and even a return to pre-threshold surface temperatures or to atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, does not guarantee that the tipping elements return to their pre-threshold state." That doesn't sound like it's not that bad. We can't even deal with financial crises, how are we going to contend with things like mass migration?
@christopherjohnson9167
@christopherjohnson9167 2 года назад
@@sb_dunk exactly the technical summary which is what Ive read as well. Yeah of course that sounds pretty bad, my point is that it’s not apocalyptic as many seem to think. In fact with technological innovations most peoples quality of lives will continue to improve as time goes on. Now we’ve dealt with some events of mass migration before that were far more abrupt, while climate is something that is changing slowly each year, so it’s less pressure all at once compared to when we had the refugee crises from Syria. I would suggest that Canada and Russia begin increasing immigration rates substantially. Canada and Russia are the two countries with by far the most landmass, they’re also very northern countries meaning a large portion of the land has been too cold for most people to live in. With the warming climate far more of this land will become viable for living in and farming. This is the innovative practical thinking we should employ to solve this issue, not the climate doom hysteria of people wanting to tear down the system.
@sb_dunk
@sb_dunk 2 года назад
@@christopherjohnson9167 The extract I pasted says that models show that events like droughts and forest fires will change abruptly, so I don't see how migration there will be gradual. We haven't dealt with the Syria crisis very well and it's resulted in a lot of xenophobia and a rise of nationalist and isolationist politics, and I think migration from one country compared to all populations at certain latitudes don't compare.

@a_8764
@a_8764 2 года назад
The comments shifting blame to China and India completely rely on those countries having absolutely massive populations. They conveniently focus on total emissions instead of emissions per capita. If China split into five independent republics, then each of those new countries would have total emissions similar to the rest of the world's countries, despite nothing having actually changed. It's silly to compare Britain's and China's emissions and conclude "look China is much worse" when that's simply a function of being a larger country. If country A's population is four times larger than that of country B, then each citizen of A should only be allowed to produce one fourth the emissions of a citizen of country B (according to this line of reasoning). It's absolutely stupid. And of course, it also ignores the fact that much of western industrial capital has been outsourced to those countries, and that their production is to a large extent driven by consumerism in developed nations. It makes no sense, it's just racist mental gymnastics in order to shift the blame onto the "Asiatic hordes".

The issue with plastic is that the very property of being an almost unperishable material is it's major function, that's why it's so hard to recycle, we want a material that can last an eternity in stock and keeps whatever is inside untouched, in food to prevent spoilage in other products just so they can remain in stock for ages. So when we talk about making a plastic substitute that is recyclables, or bio degradable, it contradicts the very purpose of plastic, but I do believe we should forego commodity in favor of these more degradable plastic substitutes, wherever possible, specially in the case of single use plastics.
@freaki0734
@freaki0734 2 года назад
well another fundamental property of at least half the plastics (thermoplastic's) is how easily moldable they are so recycling them could actually be easier than recycling rather complex natural materials like paper. There are of course quite a few difficulties to recycling none of which really have anything to do with you putting something in the wrong bin at times, and actually almost all of which can be broken down to the profit motive and the infinite growth fewer dreams capitalism entails

It's a bit like asbestos: the pros of which are that when used as insulation it's fireproof, resists chemical degredation, and easily breaks down to be able to fit in any little place you could stuff it. Once it enters your body, it's the exact same list... Biodegradable plastics are becoming more commonplace in niche businesses, but it's an arduous process and mostly food business-oriented. And it still feels like for every place that will give you your to-go meal in a compostable box, two will give it to you in a polystyrene tomb, which must be cheap for them to buy as they don't even do the job well while being totally unrecyclable.

Insulate Britain was so obviously an astroturfing operation just ahead of legislation to curb protest rights. Whilst other campaign groups are led by people with the title "Dr.", Insulate Britain was headed up by an incoherent thicko. The costs would have been relatively low but the results were significant. Insulate Britain did more to discredit environmental protest than any other group or action. Give an award to the people (big PR/lobbying firm funded by a Tufton St. think tank?) who pulled that one off. I'd say that Mr. Broccoli is also funded by big meat and dairy in order to discredit veganism. When broccoli or avocado are mentioned in relation to plant based diets we can be absolutely sure, immediately, that the message will be anti. Cheap "guerilla marketing" and astroturfing operations of this type can be way more effective than massive advertising campaigns. If I were representing fossil fuel or meat and dairy clients as a PR agent, it's exactly what I'd be suggesting.
