Climbing Cerro Pedernal, Georgia O’Keeffe’s Mountain (and New Mexico’s Most Famous Peak?)

Cerro Pedernal (9,862') is a prominent peak (No. 105 with 1,362' of prominence) in the Jemez Mountains in Northern New Mexico. There are few mountains that capture the spirit of New Mexico more than Cerro Pedernal. At nearly ten thousand feet high, Pedernal stands alone far from the main mass of the volcanic Jemez Mountains. While there is no official trail to the summit, the path is well-worn, and several summit registers’ worth of names suggest it is one of the more popular peaks in the region, despite a Class 3+ crux that must be climbed.
It is most famous for being Georgia O’Keeffe’s favorite mountain, and she painted it many times. The first time I saw this mountain was in painting form at the Georgia O’Keeffee Museum in Santa Fe, and I thought it was haunting, so I’m glad that I got to summit the peak!

I climbed Mt.Baldy up near Cimarron in thick clouds and it was amazing! The enchanting quality of that country comes alive in such conditions..Thanks for taking us along!

I should note that in order to avoid the threat of thunder storms at over 12,000ft, I started out in the late afternoon with the goal of spending a solo night at the summit. What a sunset that was!

I assume you're referring to the one on Philmont? That is a gorgeous mountain, with a beautiful view. I think the hike I did pairing it with Touch-Me-Not is my favorite hike I've ever done in New Mexico. Unfortunately, I did not film it apart from a beer review on the summits. It was a good move to avoid thunderstorms, though sometimes they can linger into the evening, but it sounds like it worked out for you! I have another video where I climb Wheeler Peak early in the morning (it is admittedly terrible quality because I made some mistakes mixing frame rates with awful results), but that was a really magical experience where, due to rain the evening before, the entire Moreno Valley was a low-lying sea of clouds. I'd recommend watching that just to see that scene. Thanks for watching!

Yes, Philmont's crown jewel and a fairly gentle climb for a mountain that's over 12,000ft. My dream is to paraglide from there down to Eagle Nest lake..

Thank you! We are grateful to have a healthy baby girl, and, aside from being small (6 lb 5 oz), she has no adverse health affects from being born 3.5 weeks early.

Wow, incredible section of New Mexico.The views you had despite some of it being limited by clouds is super incredible. Georgia O' Keeffe's art of this area is truly magical to New Mexican's. That was awesome. I definitely gotta try it one of these days. The crux didn't look that bad. I followed this up with a video of a kid and his dad climbing the shield in the Sandias. OMG!!! Better than a scary movie, hahaha. It's something I probably would have tried in my 20s; but that was a long time ago. Congrats on the new family member!

How you can tell if its an old Georgia O'keeffe painting is if you can see the burn mark from a plane crash ...it is the burn mark that is the antelope ...congratulations on the summit..there is also a cave where the lave meets the uprise.
