Ascending Sangre de Cristo 14er Crestone Needle via the south face on August 11, 2022 from the Upper South Colony Trailhead. Standing just east of Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle is a dramatic, steep, triangular-looking pinnacle that rises to an impressive 14,196 feet. Climbing it reflects this, but it's on pretty solid rock for the most part. It was actually the very last Colorado 14er to be climbed. On this occasion, just a week shy of the date I climbed Crestone Peak last year, I ascend and descend via the Needle's easiest route, which is the class 3 south face. The upper part of the route ascends steep gullies and inclines, and presents route variations. One of these, though more complicated, keeps the difficulty at class 3 and crosses from the east to the west gully. The other remains in the east gully but involves class 4 rock. Here, I took the first option. The view clarity at the top was terrific, and afforded probably the best vista I have experienced so far in the Sangre de Cristo Range. In this video I provide maps, and detailed route description of the upper part of the climb from Broken Hand Pass at ~12,900 feet to the top. For more detail and footage of the approach hike below the Pass, as well as more information about the history of the Crestones and the Sangre de Cristo Range overall, and the nearby towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff, see my video on climbing Crestone Peak: • Crestone Peak - Climb ... . Making it up and down this spectacular peak presents quite a challenge in terms of climbing and route-finding, and should be approached with preparation and knowledge. That being said, enjoy the footage! For my climb of the highest Sangre de Cristo 14er, Blanca Peak, go here: • Blanca Peak - Summit c... . Here is the table of contents for this video:

This peak might be considered one of those quintessential 14er experiences: a not-too-daunting approach hike through idyllic environs (provided you are able to start at the upper TH), followed up by an engaging & exhilarating climb to the top, with spectacular vistas. The overall character reminds me of Wetterhorn Peak, in the San Juans. Also, congrats to Hiking 121 for being the first to correctly guess the mystery peak, Ellingwood Point. 🏆🏆🏆. Thanks for watching, and happy trails!! For the Wetterhorn video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1QlBLQp_K2c.html

I remember that west gully fondly, I felt very secure climbing in there. My partner and I brought wands to temporarily mark our path up and that definitely made the return go quickly without need for route finding back.

The west gully stretch is definitely less precarious than the east gully stretch. And the route-finding is fairly complicated, especially if you switch gullies to minimize the technical difficulty. For sure, returning therefore presents the challenge of remembering those key points. Apparently, above the cross-over point, the east gully becomes harder but is still solid. If I ever go back, I will have to try the east gully all the way up. Thanks for watching!

Thanks, great shots of the gully, especially the traverse, which I couldn't figure out last time before a storm blew in. Awkward angles.

Crossing over from the east gully to the west gully was the most challenging part of the route-finding on this mtn, and also a climbing challenge, both ascending and descending. I am given to understand that one can just continue up the east gully, which becomes class 4 a bit higher up, but is solid rock, and doesn't involve the confusing switch. If I go on this route again, I will probably give that a try. And this mtn definitely provides some amazing footage. Thanks for watching!

Well done as always, really enjoy your videos. Never climbed out there but did bag a few peaks in the Tetons years ago. Was going to ask if traverse was on your agenda, but you brought it up in the last minute. lol That final wall on the traverse looks pretty intense. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for watching another one. As far as I understand, the traverse involves a class 5 sequence, but the crux is the final class 4 stretch up to the top of the Needle on very steep but largely solid rock, where falling would kill you and optimal conditions are necessary. I would try it, if the idea were to ever particularly strike my appeal. 😎

Thank you, and I don't have any specific plans for that, even though every year I tell myself this will be the year I get into doing winter high mtn hikes. Maybe eventually.

I appreciate you saying so. I am charmed by the notion that my accounts of these places might instill a bit of awe & wonder in anyone else....(not to mention, that's great if it's helpful as well!)

(Mystery peak guess - Ellingwood Point?) Nice job summiting the Needle CT!! I had plans to do that one this past year but weather prevented me and then it was too late in the year to try again. Shooting for next year for sure! I really appreciate your thorough content as it helps me mentally prepare for this one. The Crestones are a bit intimidating. Since you’ve done both the Peak and Needle, do you think it’s feasible to do both in one day if I start from South Colony Lakes? Would appreciate your perspective.

Thank you - again I am glad if this can be of help. And yes! The peak in question is Ellingwood Point, just to the right of Blanca. 👏👏🏆🏆 The Crestones are indeed intimidating, and for good reason. As for the question, it would be totally feasible to climb both in a day from Lower South Colony Lake - (if in fact you mean the lake itself and not either of the South Colony trailheads). It seems you would basically have 2 options. #1 would be to climb both via their standard routes. It would probably be better to do the Peak first. From the lake at ~11,700', you would first go up to Broken Hand Pass at ~12,900', descend to Cottonwood Lake near 12,300', and ascend via the gully to the top at ~14,300'. Then you would descend back to ~12,300', go back up to the pass at ~12,900', then (the weather and oneself permitting) take the South Face route up the Needle to ~14,200'. Then all the way back down to ~11,700. I come up with ~5,100+ feet of total gain for this combo, and I'd put it at only about 6 to 7 total miles, mostly on fairly difficult terrain. A very challenging day even starting that high, but doable. #2 would be to do the traverse from the Peak to the Needle, which I myself have not yet done. This would subtract hundreds of feet from the total gain for the day, and significant distance as well, but you might not save much (or any) time since it is more technical and slower. I understand the class 5 move isn't all that exposed, but the class 4 stretch up the Needle poses high exposure and danger. Again quite challenging but doable. I would imagine that overall, #2 is the slightly harder option given its greater technicality, danger, and commitment. A tough - but correspondingly rewarding - day either way.

Thanks so much for your input! Yes I would definitely be choosing your option 1. That Crestone traverse you described in option 2 greatly concerns me. I’ll take my chances on the higher amount of elevation gain.

What a thrilling climb! You had me on pins and needles from crux to summit. Very impressive! By the way, have you hiked all the 14ers in CO by now?
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks Год назад
It was - thanks for going along once more. This mountain group is one of the most dramatic I've been to, maybe the most so. The number of 14ers in the state depends on who you ask. I believe currently 58 is the most prominently cited number. I have managed to make it up 37 so far I think, but there are a bunch that I have gone up multiple times. This summer I was fortunate enough to make it up a couple of the most challenging ones, including this peak.

@@CentennialTreks This is definitely a cool group. And only 21 left? You should be able to knock those out by next summer eh? :D
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks Год назад
Well, if I'm going for that goal, then realistically, maybe in say 5 years or so. The thing is, all the 14ers I haven't climbed are the farthest ones from where I live, so they all involve mini-road-trips - especially the San Juan Range, in southwest CO.
@OutdoorExistential

@@CentennialTreks you only live once CT. Mini road trips sound pretty nice. Could be a cool video commemorating your list completion. :D
