Join me as I take my 2020 Mercedes 4x4 Sprinter-my home on wheels-up the challenging Mineral Creek route from Ouray to the summit of Engineer Pass, one of Colorado’s most rugged and scenic mountain roads. Living the van life means bringing your home wherever the road takes you, and this path really pushed both me and the Sprinter to the limit with steep climbs, tight switchbacks, and rocky terrain. But the reward? Epic views at over 12,000 feet and the freedom to camp out anywhere. This video is the kind that I like the best: 1. Go to the wilderness, 2. Cook in the field, 3. Stay in the wilderness overnight... Watching such a video is the best for most city people, since most of us couldn't do it in person for all kinds of reasons.

I was stationed in Alaska. A buddy and myself took my 4X4 GMC over 40 miles behind in the roughest terrain I've ever seen. We dealt with everything possible. We get about 35 miles back and there was a guy in a Station Wagon!!! It was like, WHAT!!!!! I couldn't believe it, we finally made it back to where you could not absolutely go any further. Guess who comes pulling up in his station wagon? Unbelievable!!!

Having done these trails and passes in my beautiful State of Colorado, I can tell you that Engineer Pass in that Sprinter Van was unrefu..... real man. I have rolled a SxS on Red Elephant Hill off I70 and done Red Cone Pass and sh** my pants. No way in a Sprinter Van. Cheers my friend and what an accomplishment! Try Rollins Pass either side, nothing technical but very beautiful. They were the old train routes before the Moffat Tunnel was built.

Great video, I love Engineer Past! My wife and youngest son drove to the top and down the other side and out through Mineral Creek Road to US 550 in our new stock 1994 GMC Extended Cab Diesel 4x4 Dually on all terrains in the fall of 1994. The few jeep drivers we encountered were curious and friendly, many gave us thumbs up and we had no problems negotiating any of the trail. I probably wouldn’t try to drive it today in the dually, though we still own it, as these trails have been become so popular and congested I would have difficulty making room for oncoming traffic. But back in 1994 we saw only about three jeeps or so. No traffic and no stress.

Aah!!! My favorite Mountains!! I grew up about an hour and a half from Ouray! To the south, at the Colorado/NM line. I have driven a pickup loaded with a big camper over that pass. A few times. I won’t say more but will let you/everyone remain amazed as you go over the pass.

In 2009, as a solo traveler, I took a Chevy van with an after-market 4x4 and a 3" lift up the same trail, and Jeep drivers told me the same: "[Probably not a good idea]." While the vehicle is a variable, the greater variable is driver experience. As an HMMWV and track vehicle trainer, I had plenty of experience taking vehicles to their maximum capabilities. The best part is that I, too, camped at the top of Engineer Pass and took a picture of watching President Obama address the nation on TracVision satellite TV. Thanks for sharing.

Another Chad classic. Loved every second. Honestly the best vehicle for that toughest section of trail is probably a mule. Would not be near as comfortable in the overnight rain mind you. Continued safe travels...looking forward to the next one.
