In 2021 I was definitely guilty of becoming a bit of a hermit, even though I could sort of get out and travel I didn’t do that much of it. So that’s gonna change and that’s only going to happen if I get off my backside and get to it. So I got some friends together and found a mountain or hill, I’m not really sure whatever it was, I decided to climb it
So asking each other whether we fancied climbing a mountain is sort of where the planning began and finished, to be honest. Of course, we had clothes snacks and a bit of beer to get us to the top but none of us had ever been here before
So where is here, well it’s Yorkshire, this part of Yorkshire and here you can find Pen-y-Ghent which is one of the highest peaks in the county. It’s actually one-third of the three peaks challenge which is sort of like a charity thing that people do. Climb the three peaks and get sponsored it’s sort of a baby version of the much more serious UK three peaks challenge.
Anyway from what I’ve heard Pen-y-Ghent is the easiest of the three peaks to get up so we weren’t really concerned about getting to the top
Now I’ve got this little thing called type one diabetes which is a lifelong health condition which can make doing things like climbing a mountain just a little bit risky. However, my body is covered in tech to monitor and control the condition.
I’ve got an insulin pump which delivers the medication I need to stay alive and a blood glucose monitor which will tell me if my blood sugar is dangerously low or high.
Plus I’ve lived with this condition for over 6 years now and I don’t like to let a little thing like a chronic illness prevent me from having fun.
Still climbing up Pen-y-Ghent wasn’t easy, the part of the hill which I thought would lead me to the summit absolutely wasn’t. It was just the start of two very steep climbs covered in snow and ice.
Pen-y-Ghent or Penyghent is a fell in the Yorkshire Dales, England. It is the lowest of Yorkshire's Three Peaks at 2,277 feet (694 m). The other two being Ingleborough and Whernside.[2] It lies 1.9 miles (3 km) east of Horton in Ribblesdale.[3] It has a number of interesting geological features, such as Hunt Pot, and further down, Hull Pot. The waters that flow in have created an extensive cave system which rises at Brants Gill head.
The Pennine Way links the summit to the village; the route is around 3.1 miles (5 km) in length as the Way curves initially to the north before turning east to reach the summit. The more direct route that traverses the southern 'nose' of the hill is the route usually taken by those attempting the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, as the walk is usually (but not exclusively) done in an anti-clockwise direction starting and finishing in Horton in Ribblesdale. The other main hillwalking route on the hill heads north from the summit to reach Plover Hill before descending to join Foxup Road, a bridleway at the head of Littondale.
