Building a climbing gym has its own challenges, like installing 8000+ T-Nuts on a budget. I will show you 3 different ways to install the 4 prong t-nut and how to make them last longer.

I have one kid already and another on the way. How many do you recommend in order to build a home wall efficiently? Zero?
@climberdad

Ideally you would place them on a 6" grid pattern so it just depends on size of the wall.

Just wondering what type of glue you used? And do you have idea how long the screws for the screw-in t-nuts. Just wanna know if they really can bite to my 18mm plywood. Thank you.

Polyurethane construction adhesive. #6 1/2" pan head screw.

what board panel are you using mike for the wall climbing? im thinking bout plywood 3/4 or 5/8 thickness or osb board but worried with its chemical gasses if using it indoors/small room..
@climberdad
@climberdad 4 года назад
OSB quality depends heavily on the glue used, the cheap stuff isn't worth the problems, I would stay away from it. Use 3/4" plywood, the more plys the better. This gym was built with 13ply 3/4" birch and 7 ply 3/4" pine on the low sections.

how have you installed the plywood on the metal frame? looks to me they are some sort of screws. is that 3/16 thick metal angle bar?
@climberdad
@climberdad 3 года назад
2" angle iron 1/8" - 3/16" thick. Subframe is 2" square tubing 1/8" wall. I used self taping wood to metal screws.
@gvanaco-fantasy

I have used the methode with the glue. It's working very good. But use some more glue. When you hammering the nut inside, the glue must come under from the nut.

I have a project that I want to use Tee nuts on but I don't want a hole drilled all the way through. Is it possible to drill a countersink hole just on the side the tee nut will be installed on?
@climberdad
@climberdad 3 года назад
No. The flange needs to be on the opposite side of where you are putting the bolt/screw in. There are threaded inserts to accomplish what you are talking about.

Nice one. My local wall puts a couple of little screws on each T Nut. But glue seems more cost effective. I’m building a home wall. Can you advise how to install the frame to the exterior of my garage wall?

How deep should the t-nuts be to be properly seated? Should they be lying flat on top of the ply or once I’ve got them flat (like I do now), should I use the drill/setter’s wrench to pull the tnut into the board so it is flush?
@climberdad
@climberdad 3 года назад
No gap between the flange and the plywood. The tops don't need to be flush with the top of the plywood.

Curious- i have 19 feet wide by 8 feet tall wall- Im thinking a 12 inch grid. Would love to know your thoughts on grid spacing as well as how many holds i should buy for that space. Is 50 too many? Too few? Awesome content! Buying from escape per your recommendation!
@climberdad
@climberdad 3 года назад
For holds I would start out with 1 hold for every 2 sq Ft and add more with time. 12" spacing is not enough unless you plan on substituting with alot of screw-on holds. 6" spacing is the best IMHO

What size drill bit did you use? I’ve heard 1/2” and 7/16”
@climberdad
@climberdad 4 года назад
It depends on the t-nut. Most require a 7/16". But, for example, the Escape climbing industrials t-nut requires a 1/2" drill

Glue seems like a good idea but I'd imagine it would be a hassle to replace destroyed tnuts.

It takes a little bit more to pound them out but you can. We are planning on replacing them with the Escape industrial t-nut when/ if they need replacing which also requires a larger diameter hole in the panel.

The glue is for the threaded insert (tnut) that you attach the holds to, not for holds or the inside of the tnut. Hope that helps 😀
