My review of the Clinch Engineer Boot after 9 months of wear (received April 2022)
Brass Shoe Co. Tokyo
Clinch
9 months of wear
9” Engineer Boot
CN Last
Size 10US/11 Clinch (for 10.5C Brannock US)
Maryam Horsebutt
Hand finished black teacore
Reproduction O’Sullivan half sole
Black edge dressing
Black thread
Brass roller buckles
Flat welt
Hand welt
Pull tab
Unstructured toe
Unlined
Sizing advice: most D width should go TTS. Narrow width and low volume should go 1/2 down like me. High volume D or low volume E might be able to make 1/2 up work.

Thanks for the in-depth review. Both on how the last fits, the leather, your overall experience is always very appreciated! On a side note, I've yet to find an Engineer that fits. I have narrow heels but hate my toes crammed. You're a C where as I am a D but the way that you talk about your toes being longer and overall fit reminds me of myself a lot. I've been very tempted to just pull the trigger on Kreosote's Engineers and call it one and done for bespoke Engineers. Nothing is more frustrating than having about $5,000-10,000 in footwear that hates your feet. Like yourself I like a smaller rotation, so wanting to dump the closet of excess is tempting. I currently have an Engineer that ran me $800+ and is a nice paperweight. I get that is chump change to some, but it's expensive enough it really makes me wonder if I am not better off spending my money and time on something not an Engineer. 😅 Trying to figure out what to do with it? It has probably 2 days of wear and tear. I have no friends it fits unfortunately. I would love a video of how to effectively sell your boots to someone who usually just gives them away. I've had a couple of trades here and there but definitely wish I could dump my closet full of what doesn't fit. It would make a pretty cool video topic and maybe more than just myself might be interested. Now I am curious to see your collection of 7 boots and get your take on them though. It makes me wonder what has made the cut and what hasn't?

Hey! Yeah, sounds like we are in the same boat. 😂 I probably should have talked up the MTM feature of the Role Clubs a bit more. For people with feet like ours, that’s totally the ticket. You should TOTALLY buy Kreosote; JD Gabbard’s work is the absolute best IMHO (for engineers). They will fit you, and you won’t regret it. Worth the wait. Role Club is a good route too, but my experience was a bit shaky at times, so you would just have to communicate clearly what you want for the fit. I do still trust Brian a lot, but communication is key. Also, perhaps I’ll do a video someday about my whole collection. It’s basically that I know what I like and don’t like now haha

Beautiful boots.How did you get the toes so flat? Did they just go down with wear? Great review by the way
@thevintagefuture6567

Thanks! Yeah they just flattened naturally with wear.

That was a very good review. The sizing is a bit confusing, as on Standardandstrange it states go 0.5 down from Brannock, which would mean a size 10D for me, being a 10.5D on Brannock, however that doesn't make sense, as i follow the TTS for Brannock most of the time, or at least for the ball/arch length measurements. Example, my Red Wings are 10.5D, 8 Last, 23 Last, so that should mean i am 11.5D in Clinch, if it's a whole size too big compared to US measurements. Did that make sense?

Glad you found the review helpful! For the sizing, the first thing that throws people off is, Clinch has two sizes labeled on the box: Clinch/Japan size, and US size. The Clinch/Japan size is always one number above the US size. For instance, I’m a 10.5C/D Brannock US and in Clinch boots take a 10US / 11Japan. I have a narrow foot, so I go 1/2 down. Most people should just buy TTS…..The second thing is, all my Clinch boots are CN last or CN-S last. Standard and Strange often sells Clinch on the CN-WIDE last, which has totally different sizing than CN or CN-S. Perhaps that explains why the sizing info is confusing.

Such cool boots. Had a quick question on these. Have you ever found yourself out in wet weather while wearing these? If so, when they were rained on did it have any real detrimental effect on the leather? Thank you!
@thevintagefuture6567
@thevintagefuture6567 3 месяца назад
Yes they've been wet plenty of times, and it's fine. Leather is very resilient. It's not as ideal as rain boots for a true squall, but walking through the rain for a few minutes, even stepping in a few puddles, is no big deal at all. You just condition them from time to time and they're fine.

If I’m a 9.5D in Wesco ML, what size you think I’d be in these same Clinch boots?

Off topic but what are your thoughts on wearing black shoes with your silver belly open road? Debating if I should get a black hat or use my silver belly for everything.

@@thevintagefuture6567 Thank you for the vote of confidence! I am coming from the more traditional cowboy hat world were you wear black boots with black hats and brown boots with silver belly. I've just recently switched to an open road as I'm over the inconvenience of a big ol' hate.

ill never understand, as someone who owns high end boots from clinche to Edward Green to viberg, how people like you (which make up the majority of people buying these boots) take great pride in beating up their fashion boots.

I hear you- what you say makes sense. I think it’s just the appeal of having a boot that looks old and vintage.

guy b*tching about boots costing over 500 bucks. ill pay a grand for good leather boots. bet u them same jokers spend 250 to 300 on crap sneakers two to three times a year. had a pair of those boots when i was in my 20s. i don't like how the toe looks at the end, the wrinkle looks nerdy, only a nerd will be ok on how the toe looks. so soon has my boots started to look nerdy i stopped wearing them NEVER to buy them again. love ur vides
