I can relate. I used to wear it when I was 14 too, I’m 49 now and can’t find it in Europe 😩 so I got my hands on the ELF Back Cherry Sheer Stick, which Amanda Z had in her dupe video
I'm 41 and Black Honey was the first non drugstore lip product for the majority of girls in my high school, me included. The Almost Lipstick in Black Honey and the ubiquitous green pressed powder compact was in many girls' purses because a trip to the Clinique counter at the mall was a 15th/16th bday gift for most of us.
I got the Clinique Black Honey at Sephora about a year ago I haven’t worn it though but I started thing about it for a while and here your video. The funny thing is I have a few of your other dupes but I bought them for a nice berry color for summer for a bit of color without wear so much makeup during the sweltering heat
Right?? I've been wearing it since high school in the mid 90s and this is the first time I haven't been able to repurchase it. I can't wait for its popularity to end!
Black Honey is what Liv Tyler wore as Arwen in the Lord of the Rings series! I had a tube a long time ago and due to its resurgence in popularity, I have been trying to get my hands on it again. A sheer layer of Glossier Leo is a nice matte shade if you want to “dupe the vibes,” as Hannah Louise Poston would say!
@@matildaonvideo Yes I bought it due to Liv Tyler in the early 2000s, too. Who does not want to look like a mysterious Elv. Also: I am in general very drawn to colours like it, Red Dahlia by Burt's Bees is my favourite lazy lip products.
Although I am interested about the range of brown lipsticks here, I am really fascinated by everyone’s stories and experiences with the Black Honey lipstick! It’s so interesting to read their stories from the time I was still little!
I remember getting this for Christmas when I was 16 and I was extremely unimpressed. I was into thick frosty lipgloss or juicy tubes. Its kind of funny to see people going crazy over it 15 years later. I may have to try it again!
I'm 41 and have been wearing Black Honey for 20+ yrs, since high school in the mid 90s. I can't wait for its popularity to fade again because this is the first time I haven't been able to repurchase it!
@@loriegabidel Well, that’s not a great attitude to have. You’d be in a tight spot if Clinique decided to discontinue the shade. New generations discovering old reliable makeup is a good thing for everyone ❤
My grandma gave me a sample of this when I first started getting interested in wearing lipstick as a teen. My mom noticed it and asked what I was wearing and I showed her the sample tube. She laughed and said that she wore this exact shade when she was a teen and thought it was fitting that I discovered the same shade!
What a lovely shared lipstick experience Lia! A really special makeup connection to those family members forevermore. Thank you for sharing this with us ☺️🖤 x
Black Honey is the only lipstick I have repurchased multiple times. It has been in my collection since I started wearing makeup and I always made sure to purchase a backup before opening a new tube. My lips are more of a deep pigment and it was difficult to dip my toe into lipstick when I wanted something easy, light, for everyday use and this was on product. Especially when at the time I was living on a humid, summer all the time, island; I didn't want something I was worried about smudging with sweat.
I'm 56. I used to babysit when I was 14/15 so I could buy the Clinique lip gloss pots, my favorite was Black Honey. I used to have a cool aunt who bought me the pot gloss as well. They were $5 back then. Also Revlon Blackberry is iconic. My sister wore it in her wedding in 1998 but it was around long before then. I have a few of those in my bag as well. It's amazing what remains iconic. Thank you, Matilda.
I’m an old fart (58) and started wearing Black Honey in 1980 when it was a pot gloss. I currently have 3 tubes, 1 in my purse, 1 in my makeup collection at home, and 1 for a backup. Just love it!
Growing up (during my teens) my grandma would give me lipsticks to try out. I’ll never forget this shade. 10 years later here we are! Lovely to see another generation enjoying (and ensuring it stays on the shelves!) 🥰
I'm 66 and started with Black Honey when I was in college, and the product came in a little jar called a pot. Now I have it in the silver twist-up stick like she shows.
I have both a pot and a tube of Clinique Black Honey. Not sure what the hype is about, because I never loved the shade or the formulas. I always found Clinique's glosses in general to be too sticky for my taste, and they used to give Black Honey away with purchase all the time. I just don't get it. Can someone enlighten me, please? Prescriptives formulas were a different story: perfect in every way.
I had the original black honey in the early 90’s used it to the end .. then fashion changed & it was abandoned in my drawer. I can’t believe it’s made such a huge comeback after decades .. 💋 I think the secret of its appeal is it suits all skin colours and all natural lip pigmentations .. effortlessly glides on & enhances your natural beauty
I've heard people rave about black honey for years and haven't tried it myself. I HAVE tried the Nivea Blackberry and LOVE IT! And, after watching your review I think the fact that it is less brown it would suit my completion better. Sooo soothing on the lips... it's even replaced my Fresh Sugar Tint (I know it's a different colour) Poppy as my current go to lip.
I absolutely love seeing Clinique get more recognition for their lip products. They used to make long lasting formulas for both lipstick and lip gloss but but both were discontinued several years ago :( Their lip products are definitely among the most comfortable ones available on the market. I also adore their Chubby Stick cream blushes, which I definitely think you should try out.
Yes!!! Finally Matilda addressing this trending topic hahaha i love your videos!!! Black Honey has been a very popular shade for a lipgloss and in my country is non existing so I'm glad to see various brands with a variety of options, thank you Matida!
I used to wear Black Honey back in the early 2000s after hearing it was Cameron Diaz's go to shade. Was a total staple until it got overshadowed by newer purchases. Just ordered it again recently and can't wait to try it out again 20 years later. I love the natural depth tot adds to my lip color without feeling excessive..
Everything old is new again. I’ve been wearing Clinique Black Honey since high school. It’s the quintessential “my lips but better” shade. I’ve repurchased so many times over the past 30 years, and will always have a tube in my collection. Black Honey is a true makeup classic that can never go out of style.
I've bought black honey recently and i FELL in love. I have read many negative reviews about it not lasting long, not coloring people's lips well etc. But honestly, it works like a charm for me. I have never been able to wear a lipstick before because i never liked the way they looked on me so lip balms were always my go-to. Black honey is my favorite one so far. I am using it literally every day if i have to go out. It makes me feel so natural, it looks natural but it doesn't make me look like i didn't put any thought into my looks like some other lip balms, and it lasts just fine. %100 recommended if you like the natural look!
Finallyyyyyyyy I live in India and cannot get black honey here unless we order via sephora usa and it gets super expensive due to customs. But we do have nivea, burts bees and clinique chubby stick so I will the this
I feel like black honey had a youtube resurgence a few years ago because I remember buying it on recommendation from someone online and since then it has been my #1 fav! I've been through 3 tubes and I normally never go through lipstick. So happy to see more people trying this awesome shade.
This was in my recommendation and IT IS PERFECT. I also loovee sheer lipstick, they are perfect for teens like me as they look natural. I also love brown/ nude/ mauve shades because they look flattering for my skin tone. Def. going to subscribe! ❤️
i love clinique's richer raisin!! i had gotten a full sample set of all the chubby sticks two christmases ago and realized that a more gentle, rosewood color worked best on me instead of the lively pinks. i got the full size richer raisin a year ago and i swear by it. i'd love to try black honey someday :) p.s. richer raisin really works well as a base. it feels great under lip glosses, lipsticks, or just on its own!
Black honey always felt so personal to me, at a very young age falling in love with ads for it in a vogue or instyle magazine when I first loved lipstick at about 13 . Later loving it again when I found out it’s what Liv Tyler wore, always seeing Arwen as a symbol of beauty. I never forgot it and always went back to it. My heart sank a little when I saw it trend on tik tok but remembered this revival will keep it produced much longer
I used to wear the mascara, eyeliner, lipstick, nail polish …of course the lip color. Never got so many compliments. This color makes my green eyes look like they could glow in the dark.
I always love Matilda's recommendations since I love makeup but I'm not always keen on makeup that can come across as quite heavy. Definitely found some of my favourites through her. ♥
This brings me back to the 90s! I was born in 1990 and my first type of makeup I ever owned as a kid was that bullet style balm same as the black honey! The berry-purples was so popular and some of them even had scents!
The Pacifica lip oil stick in crimson crush is a super good dupe for black honey. Clinique has been my moms go to makeup brand since her young adulthood so their products have always been a staple for me. I have gone through a couple different lip products that I hoped would be similar and this is the best one I have found
I’m so happy I watched this video. I’ve always wanted Black Honey but this type of “berry-adjacent” (I’m sorry I’m terrible with colours) stained sheer lipsticks always look fuchsia on me and this particular one is outrageously prized in my country (for being a tiny thin bullet of sheer colour I mean) so I just didn’t dare. I made do dabbing a smidge of opaque matte vampy lipstick like Velvet Midnight on and then sometimes using some lip balm on top, looks very nice yes, but sometimes I don’t want to fuss so much. I honestly had no idea that Lisa Eldridge Painterly, which I own and adore and doesn’t go fuchsia bright on me would swatch so similarly, it isn’t the same magical effect when the bullet looks almost black, and I still want one that has more purple because why not look like I’ve been eating poisonous berries if I can, but I’m so glad! … I might also have just put an order for thr VBB Bisou stain.
I owned Black Honey for the longest time and decluttered it last year - my natural lip colour is quite deep. So I opted for the Clinique Chubby stick in Raisin instead and ELF, surprisingly. I also found that NARS Afterglow lip balm in Wicked Ways and Milani's Black Cherry is quite nice. Thank you, as always, for your comprehensive and well-researched videos !
Omg, i had the clinique black honey almost 10 years ago. And now became a hipe. How crazy. Is good, but at the time i didn't wanted to buy it again cause i had tried the Nivea one , wich is similar/identical. And I liked nivea better. Now I don't care much... prefer other products. Its insane how its show this kind of video to me all the time, just because i like makeup videos.
You’re the best person to do that kind of video! I stopped myself from buying the Dior lip glow in mahogany during the Sephora sale but you make it very hard to resist any longer! Might be a gift from me to me for Christmas…
i’m have very fair skin and don’t wear super heavy make up just bold ish eyeliner, but OMG i found the last one hidden in the back of the rack in the biggest ‘boots’ store in my area and it was so worth it!!! It’s helped me dive into bolder lip shades with its build ability that really suit me and it has such a lovely consistency
A sheer lipstick I bought recently which I think has some similarities (though may be slightly more purple) is the Origins sheer lipstick in Night Bloom. It’s a new favourite of mine
No the way they used to give these in those free makeup bag w purchase and now cause of fucking TikTok I can’t find this shit anywhere this has been my go to since middle school, thanks for the dupes 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I've been using Black Honey since the 80's, but am always looking for a similar color thats more moisturizing for my dry lips ( the Almost Lipstick has none!) So far the ELF cosmetics color mentioned has my vote, but I look forward to trying the Dior Mahogany.
New subscriber! I have pale skin with undertones just off of cool olive and finding lipsticks without a white base is the base of my existence. Sheer berries and chocolates suit me much better and I am so excited to dive into your other content!
Loved the comprehensive review! And your beautifully lush descriptions of shades were amazing as usual - made me a little hungry this time with all the mentions of honey, berry and chocolate haha 😊😂
My all time favorite lipstick. I have been wearing this for over 20 years and always have three tubes. One for my vanity , one for my purse and one in my vanity drawer as a back up. I had no idea there was a shortage! I have a tiny lipstick brush that I use to get down into the tube to get every last bit left when it's worn down. And it truly looks good on every skin tone.
I love Black Honey but hate that it's not cruelty free so finding a good dupe was important but difficult!! I do really like Honest beauty tinted balm in plum drop.
I bought my first Black Honey three years ago, after watched Lisa Eldridge’s dark lipstick tutorial which was filmed 11 years ago😳! She recommended Black Honey as an option for someone who really wants to wear dark colored lipsticks but a bit afraid of the strong statement. That was exactly me! So I bought it, and have been wearing it religiously every winter😃
I have always loved that sort of black honey color. Back in high school 1988 my Mom used to buy me an Avon lip product named Slick Tints. They were thin and balmy and had beautiful deep colors very similar to back honey. This was before back honey even came out but my Mom loved them. I have bought so many similar products through the years.
Would love to see more of this Black Honey family videos! I personally find a lot of good skincare & makeup dupes in K-beauty. So far I've seen a few repeatedly mentioned as possible dupes, but there are barely any swatch comparisons. I hope you can get a chance to review even 1 of these in the future: - Palladio Herbal Tinted Balm (Brownie) = this one's not from a Korean brand tho 😅 - Amuse Dew Tint (Sunday) - CLIO Melting Sheer Lip (Brick Ride) - I'm MEME I'm Mystery Volume Tint (Mystery Fig) - Espoir NoWear Glow Lip Balm (Cranberry) - Rom&nd Glasting Gloss (Night Marine) Thank you so much for this review, Matilda! I've asked for Black Honey for Christmas, but I'm not getting my hopes up as it's sold out pretty much everywhere 😟. I might ask for the Undone Beauty or the Glossier one as an alternative instead 💛
I love black honey… I bought it on a whim over 10 years ago when I was about 15/16 (one of my first ever expensive lipsticks and I saved up for ages to try it). Immediately I noticed it made me look simultaneously healthier while also giving off a slightly gothic and punk vibe that I loved at the time and still do. I always keep a spare of BH for sentimental reasons but this inspired me to wear it more!
YAY!! So very happy to see another upload from you and especially because of the product it's centered on! I haven't started the video yet, but I see the probably deliberate thumbnail and how the BH lipstick is placed smack dab in the middle! And in between the words 'Black' and 'Honey' 🤩. Much love and warmth to you Matilda! 💖🌻
For the brits here, Primark have a really good dupe it’s bit more full coverage but the same shade, doesn’t have a name but one of their own brand lipsticks are long last and nice:)
I love this video! I tried the Clinique one loving the shade but couldn’t get on board with the formula (it looked patchy on my and felt too waxy). So I’ve been searching for the other family members 😆 I will add to the list the lip tint/oil from the Uoma By Sharon C line (the Walmart one) in the shade ‘Miss Chief’. 🥰
Eeeek I clicked so fast on this! One of my all-time favorite lipsticks, thank goodness I still have a ton left in my tube right now. It’s probably one of the only lipsticks I’ve completely used up and repurchased multiple times!
I worked for Clinique probably 20 years ago and remember it being a popular color back then. It used to be put in gift with purchases a lot. It is funny that it is making a come back. The thing that brings back those memories is the smell of their Happy perfume. Even today if I smell it in the mall it instantly transport me back to that Nordstrom counter. Funny so I guess scent memories are stronger with me.
I just barely know about Clinque's Black Honey from you mentioning it another video, but I can see why it's so popular! TikTok sure is a force to be reckoned with.
When i was much younger, probably around when black honey launched, my grandmother gave me some makeup to play with and one was a gloss called Moon Drops in Raisin. I was not into double digits yet but it’s the first time i felt beautiful. I’ve been looking for something similar ever since. Stila (Smashbox? I get them mixed up)used to have a line of lip stains (10 or 15 yrs ago?) and there was a shade that was close. Finding the black honey was the closest I ever found to the raisin and i love it. However, I wish they had a more pigmented version. I went to a perfume factory in the Cotswolds once and got to make my own perfume. Would love to have the same experience for lips. They should have a store where you can make your own make up. That way we don’t have to buy 20 dupes looking for one that is what we’re looking for
Black Honey has been a staple in my makeup bag for decades. In the 90’s many lip colours were drying and Black Honey was so comfortable. I have now been forced to use NARS Wicked Ways Afterglow since my old friend is in short supply.
Texture-wise, Surratt Lipslique is close to BH. I prefer Surratt as it lasts a bit longer and bit more pigmented. Pecadille and Au Courant have a similar vibe but my favorite shade is the lighter Eglantine, described as a berry beige.
I remember the hype about it from 15 years ago! I purchased it in a mini gift set with their Black Honey nail polish. :) Just like I saw the Elizabeth Arden mousse foundation go around a good while ago. So funny to see very old products get hyped up after so many years on the market.
Ahhh Matilda I remember watching you in middle school back when I was getting into makeup! I just re-found your channel and now i remember why i liked your Channel, simply but aesthetically pleasing keep up the amazing content :))
Yes! It's the best. My best dupes are Revlon's classic Black Cherry, but you have to put it on lightly with your finger, or -if you can find it- Revlon's Plum Velour. And the more people are looking for it, the more dupes will start showing up. Thanks for the great video.
Funny story. About 3 or 4 weeks ago i was close to being out of my favorite Burt's Bees, Red Dalia so when i was in Walgreens i was gonna pick some up. Nope. No worries. I popped into CVS, nope. Walmart?? Nope. What the hell. Have they discontinued my favorite tint? Nope. What is happening?! I mentioned to my teenager that it looks like i'm gonna have to find another lip balm and he suggested the Nivea Blackberry as he knows what looks good on me and what types of formulas i enjoy. Cool. I'll pick some up. Nope. Walgreens? Out. Walmart? Out. WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING??? Look, y'all need to just go buy the Black Honey so i can find my favorite lip balm again 🤣😂🤣
I've loved Black Honey since the late 80s. I remember it being in this slim silver tube since I originally fell in love with it. Black Honey and Clinique's (discontinued) Black Lily are the reasons I love a sheer, deep, berry shade for the lips. I have so many of these dupes in my collection. I really like the ELF Sheer Slick in Black Cherry. So close, and only $5 in the US. Black Honey really takes me back to my late teens and early college years when it was all I'd wear. It's such a nostalgic shade for me. I currently have a sample size of it in my collection, but have repurchased it for years.
@@matildaonvideo It was a bit more pigmented than black honey, but still sheer and balmy. It had more of a blackberry lean to it, than a warm brown lean to it. I feel like Clinique lipsticks are really beautiful, and underrated. Even though I have some very luxurious, expensive lipsticks in my collection, I always keep my favorite Clinique lipsticks in there.
Here are some black honey look-Similars from the NYX butter glosses lineup…they are affordable and are really soothing on the lips! I am quite pale and very cool-toned, so Cranberry Pie (BL641) gives me the best beautiful black-honey feel. If your coloring is more neutral, Rocky Road (BLG39) or the bolder Devil’s Food Cake (BL622) might be better choices. (I still wear them , but it depends on the rest of my look.). I enjoy them all!
So good to see Black Honey make a comeback! Great comparisons and suggestions, Matilda! Clinique is a little underrated imo 🥺 Have you tried Pink Honey? 👄
Hi Matlida. I love your vidoes! I had a suggestion for the product pile series. Maybe you could do a collection of your caramel/brown lipsticks? - thanks!
I remember sneaking applications of this from my mother and older sister as a kid haha! Sometime in middle school I went to the pharmacy and that's when I discovered the tinted Nivea lip balm. I had to have it! Eventually all my school friends bought it too and I remember that excitement of it being our first "lipstick" item. At least I was definitely inspired by seeing Black Honey on the women around me. You can still find one floating around in a bag of theirs somewhere to date haha.
I would like to add one, Gucci sheer Marguerite Jade. Its got more brown than berry but still reminds me of it and is one of my favorite lipsticks. Its stunning... I agree with you because I have Dior Mahogany, Clinique Raisin, Bobbi Brown Blackberry, Victoria Beckham Bisou, And Fresh Sugar Plum and they're the closest to me, with Glossier Ember being a more pigmented version... I love Black Honey
I would like to add that Colourpop's Cherry Pickin lip tint can also look like a dupe if it's applied lighter and blended since it's a more pigmented shade. I bought it before the whole hype and now I feel blessed for at least having something similar. I love these types of lipsticks because they're nice when you don't feel like having full makeup and I hate pink lipsticks.
I appreciate your assessment, I love black Honey, I have worn it on and off for years, again now I am older! I don’t see the point of a dupe unless it is a cheaper price than the original!
I love seeing all the comments of people wearing this back in the 90s because I was one of them too! I was also 14 and Clinique was my first non-drugstore makeup my mom let me use in high school. (my favorite combo back then was Clinique butterscotch lipstick with their mahogany liner because brown lips were all the rage in 1995) I’ve come back to this lipstick over the years and I’m shocked that the younger generation is now going crazy for this shade. I will confess that I was doing a major makeup purge last year before moving and I did throw out a tube of black honey. It was still pretty full too and I regret it since it’s been sold out for a while!
I first got Black Honey as a Christmas gift from my mom while I was in highschool. It was my favorite between 1994-1996. I used the whole tube and as a college student, could not afford to buy a new one. I still love this shade, but a used Burt's Bees lip balm in pomegrante as a near black honey shade, with a more sheer, pinky undertone.
For those with access to Japanese brands, ettusais' lip tint rouge in color 07 chocolate brown works as a slightly less berry, more brown dupe. Very moisturizing on the lips and easily buildable to a bold dark color. I've been using it for a few months now and very happy with it!
I have black honey at home. I wear it now and then...who knew it was trendy. I also the Nivea blackberry and Burts bees Love lip tints. I think it looks more natural than gloss or regular lipstick.
I remember when my mom took me and my sister too the Clinique counter for the first time, she was quite adamant we both got a tube of black honey as an essential. At first I was kinda meh about it (like most tweens are about anything their parents recommend), but dang, I'm glad she was so persistent about getting it for me, cause I still have some she gave me as a gift a while ago, and I've become absolutely obsessed with it
My favourite of these types of shades is actually the Romand Glasting Water Tint in Dark Coconut as I tend to prefer a more deep rose-brown shade, but Dark Coconut surprised me by being less exclusively brown than expected, still letting a hint of rose come through.
Black honey sort of always interested me, but never enough to take the plunge and buy it. But after watching this video, the thing I really want now is Painterly.
just bought black honey and it's so gorgeous. Pinkish lip products always look weird on me and I don't feel like enough of a makeup person to wear deep or dark lip products that are really obvious. Black honey works just right
I'm 61 and I went through many tubes of Black Honey in my 20's and 30's and I still have 2 old bullets left from the 1990s or even the early noughties but there is not enough to wear, unfortunately! I remember when Clinique tried to expand the range in? the early noughties and brought out 'Black Raspberry' and another Berry which I cannot remember the name of but were a total flop! Nothing could compare to the original, which I can't buy currently and now I know why, thanks tik tock, lol Would love to see more of these videos, please x
Loved reading about your history with Black Honey, thank you for sharing Janet! I'll definitely be working on a part two (or three or four) in the new year 😄🖤 x
