His time with the broncos does not get enough hype. Dude was a complete and absolute ghost in the open field. I remember watching him run 10 yards in about 3 strides on a consistent basis. Scary speed.
It's really hard for running backs to do that now because teams throw the ball so much which gives RBs little chances to touch the ball and get yards. I mean, there's like 6 to 8 of the NFL's top 20 all time career passing yard leaders still playing right now.
Running the ball was more of a focal point because QBs and Receivers weren't coddled as much as today, and defenders had alot more liberty to headhunt and didn't get a flag. Runningbacks were true workhorses.
Jsn highlights ✊✊✊✊ When Portis played for Denver he played like a hof at running back. He was a favorite of mine to watch. Every time he touched the football you felt that he was always going to score. Can't wait for the Redskins highlights of Portis. Btw, the trade of him for the great Champ Bailey didn't workout for either team as far as getting their respective teams to the superbowl goes.
@@MuneyJordan23 I believe they would've went a lot sooner if they kept Portis. They were headed in the right direction with him. Getting rid of Clinton Portis was like if the Superbowl Champion Broncos would've gotten rid of Terrell Davis.
The prototype. Second only to Jamal Lewis in my opinion. Lewis was 235 lbs. but a homerun hitter. Portis a homerun hitter, but with unbelievable moves, best cutbacks. Joy to watch.
Easily went to Washington wasn't the style of running back for there system and they made him gain weight was too much for his body type and power running wasn't him he was he was more of a quick twitch scatback
This dude would’ve been a monster in todays NFL, he was a monster in his era! True 3 down back. Receiving ability, agility, incredible cut and go skills, breakaway speed, and good contact balance. I’d compare him to Kamara for a reference in todays game.
Salute for putting these up, jsn!! Happy there's finally an extended highlight tape of Portis as a Bronco. As others have said, he could have been a HOFer had he stayed in Denver. Vision, acceleration and closing speed, he was a beast.
You made me do some research bro...the record is held by Billy Cannon for the oilers waaaayyy back in 1961 in the AFL. Playing against the Titans (Known today as my pitiful NY Jets) he had 25 rushes for 216 yards 3TD and 5 catches for 114 yards 2TD....Damn!!!
That was actually a different game against the Chiefs he set that record. The 4 td game was his rookie year. His second year he had like 218 yards and 5 tds for that record. He torched the Chiefs every time they played.
Denver felt as though they could put any RB in their system and have success which made Portis expendable. The Redskins made him pit on weight and ran a different system. He wasnt that syle of back Joe Gibbs scheme called for. He was a perfect fit in Denver, what a waste in Washington.
Howntf he fell to the 2nd round I'll never know . Remember telling my dad he was gunna be a top running back. Sucks he retired when he did. I read on ESPN once he said that every Monday morning his body hurt so bad and he was in so much pain he was almost in tears getting out of bed those mornings so he just retired
@@joshromero-burgan9860 I believe Frank Gore was the better RB, Gore had some injuries. But it’s like splitting hairs on who’s better. Just depends on style preference.
@@Mr813Fla I'm talking about in college. Portis best year he had 1200 yards 10 tds 125 receiving yards and 1 td ... Frank gores best year was 940 yards 8 tds and 110 receiving yards. Watching both imo portis was more of a game changer ar Miami. The best back on that roster college wise was mcgahee by far with 1700 yards in 02/03. They also had Reuben drouns on that roster too who was another 1k yard rusher in the nfl
Lol....u crazy...u obviously ain't seen Davis numbers...I'll give u a few..League MVP, SB MVP, 3 AFC rushing titles, 1 League rushing title, 2000 yard season and lowest rushing total in 8 playoff game player was 94 yards, 158 yes 3 tds in a lil over 3 quarters in SB...and should have run for 2500 as he missed the equivalent of 2 fulls games cause to getting pulled due to blowouts. Best 4 years of any RB in history and will never be repeated
#26 Had a nice little run as one of the top backs in the league! I use to love all those hilarious characters he made up for the media! C.P. was a true class act! The whole time #26 was suppose to sport a rb robot like his boy Willis M!
I always thought Le’veon Bell reminded me off Portis they way they run an how they’re versatile with catching passes out the back field an there body type
@@krb0123 I actually do kinda see the comparison if he's talking about how Portis played in Washington though. He bulked up quite a bit and became a more patient runner as he lost some speed.
@@michaelshields6326 Even when Portis gained weight and was on the Skins he still had way more speed than Leveon ever had. Portis was never "slow", Leveon was always slow
@@krb0123 I agree, I'm just saying more in a sense of their running style and their production. Portis's number of 40+ yard runs fell off a cliff after going to Washington. After his first carry that went for 64 yards, his longest carry over the next 5 years was 47 yards. He didn't have a single 40+ yard run besides that until 2009.
I love his rookie season he had such a hungry spirit he was fast and strong and he only weighed 195 lb I compare him to Reggie Bush who did very poorly in the NFL he didn't want it as much
Wouldn't say all that... Just a better pure rb. Portis stayed healthy early on, blocked, good natural running sense, but great coaching and run scheme. Davis, Portis, Gary, Anderson, droughs... Portis and Davis were special but these things I mentioned mattered. Reggie was q gadget dude from the gate...he could've don't better with a good scheme and coach to coach him up...what we saw from Reggie was phenomenal college...not bad in the league either when he got a chance and was healthy.. But Portis just was a better pure runner..but I aint questioning Reggie heart or "want it"...just not better
I'm sorry, but Denver's run blocking O-line was unmatched in NFL history. I could've gained 1000 yards running behind them. Once Portis left.... well, we saw the real player
You know soon as he left he rushed for 15 hundred yds in his 1st season with the skins right? The he had 13 hundreds yds followed up with a 14 hundred yds season. You making it seem like he fell off the face of the earth but the only difference he put on more weight in Washington & he didn't have as many long runs as he had in Denver and Shanahan didn't run him in the ground like Gibbs.
@@Tone22845 Yeah, but you are deliberately omitting the telling statistic: Portis's per carry avg fell into threes and low fours (5.5 w/Den), and his TDs cratered. That's how you know it was Denver's line that made all the difference. Also, I'm looking at it now -- Portis rushed for 1315 yards his 1st year with Washington. You're just wrong about everything
@@flutebasket4294 I was maybe wrong about the yr he rushed 15 hundred yds but how was I wrong about everything else? You went and doubled checked because you didn't know he was that productive in washington because you thought he fell off the map. And I did say he didn't have the long run he had in Denver because he put on weight and he was utilized differently. If any other RB played in Shanahan zone blocking scheme they're stats would also look a little better. You made seem like he became a scrub in washington & you got corrected
@@Tone22845 Again, you're intentionally ignoring his average per carry in Washington and his touchdowns dropping. His productivity fell off big time -- and if you're not willing to admit that, you have blinders on to reality, and I'll no longer waste my time talking to you
@@flutebasket4294 you must be slow. Didn't I say he put on more weight so he wasn't explosive as he was in Denver. And don't you see his rushing attempts went way up so he was definitely fresher in Denver. Gibbs utilize him differently can't you see that Shanahan used him on the outside more & Gibbs used him more in between the tackles. You definitely have comprehension issues. Like I said any rb production would go up if they played in Shanahan system
