It should make anyone who has a heart cry, not just Yankee fans (of which I also am one). Even if you were just a fan of the innate goodness of spirit that exudes from certain individuals (Lou was one) or if you you were simply a fan of great movies --- heck, even if were a Red Sox fan who wore his heart on his sleeve this would make you cry! No disrespect to Yankee fans or Red Sox fans, or fans of anything on this planet, we must all remember that the most important thing in life is to be a fan of goodness and sincerity --- be a decent human being, that should always come first --- not partisanship or flag waving or political party. Yeah, sorry, I can get a bit syrupy sometimes --- but I am a believer in humanity.

Can you imagine for a second being Babe Ruth in this scene...having done this for real with Lou Gehrig and then doing it again with Gary Cooper who is almost a spitting image of the Iron Horse...that must have been the most incredible feeling across the board I cannot imagine.

A favorite bio film. The ending is very moving. I have to point out the brief, moving performance of the young actor, David Holt, who plays the, now older boy, Billy, that Gehrig had promised several homeruns earlier in the film. It's brief but very moving, well played. [ 0:26 ]

The look on the boy's face as Lou walks away one of the most beautiful and emotional scenes in any movie. Makes me cry my eyes out.

This should make you cry because this poor man was reduced from healthy pro athlete to likely a 75 lb wheelchair bound man before his death from a disgusting disease. Had a friend many years ago pass from ALS. Think he lasted 20 months after diagnosis. Now THAT is sad.

Shh...don't say anything, but I am a Red Sox fan and this is my #1 favorite movie! I cry each time I see this beautiful biopic. Those years seemed like simpler times.

Lou Gehrig was a fearsome left handed hitter but Gary Cooper was a terrible hitter and right handed! That "minor" detail was overcome through special effects, with the movie’s editors flipping the film strip over for production and then reversing it back again when the scenes were stitched together. That meant that Gary Cooper still batted right-handed, with the Yankee logo reversed and on the opposite side of his jersey.Upon hitting a home run, for example, Cooper then ran directly to third base, making his way back to home plate in the opposite direction!
