Clive James always said he was first and foremost a writer, and there is no question he was prolific. His work included TV reviews; several autobiographies, starting with the famous 'Unreliable Memoirs'; poetry and the scripts for his many TV shows.
The Australian-born raconteur, who remained the kid from Kogarah despite spending most of his life in the UK, has died at the age of 80.

So hard to lose two such brilliant and talented greats as Clive James and Jonathan Miller at the same time. Overnight, the world has become a more dull and gray place.

I love listening to Clive talk. I have often been wondering how he is traveling with his health knowing that this day would come. A life well lived and ended with great stoicism. R.I.P. Clive 🤩

Wonderful man with great wit & humanity, Loved watching all his TV shows back in the day with my dad, we would laugh with tears in our eyes! The best sort of laugh there is... I miss my dad and I will miss Clive James and his observations of our crazy goofy and sometimes terrible world, He really was Australia's best ambassador of fun, Sweet guy, Rest in peace mate 🙏

Didn't know he passed until just now. He was a great influence on me, as a teenager, in the 1990s, especially with, "Postcards. " he freed me. I love him. And I'll be thinking of him.

if you are of the right age, every now and then an announced death of a celebrity really hits you. For me its been Neil Armstrong, David Bowie and now Clive James. I really miss the humour he delivered in his show. My sympathy to all his family and friends. Cheers Clive.

He was a big part of my life in my later teens, his books, television shows and had a knack always to bring me out of however down in the dumps I may have gotten. I was fortunate to see his one man show at the Millfield Theatre in North London in 2006 and I wanted to ask him the real name of Delmer Dynamo, in which I have an image burned into my memory of an intellectual Humpty Dumpty with a monocle! Rest in peace and thank you for giving me the laughter through the years.

When I left Africa , my comfort and my cradle, my harsh love, to move to New Zealand and Australia I felt very melancholy, but it was Clive James who entertained, humored and seduced me with his Unreliable Memoirs which I read during the flight that eased the journey, I felt disappointed that he was not there to greet me somehow. RIP you fabulous fellow, I pre-loved all of you downunder because of you.

I didn't know that Clive was gone until about five minutes ago. And in the last few seconds I found that Jonathan Miller is gone too. I know we all have to go, but I hate it when it is people like these. That was a fitting tribute. Thank you.

At the risk of seeming to be a vindictive brooder I'm provoked by the welter of accolades feting the man since his passing to relate another very different , unpleasant side to his character. In the early 90's I was a commissionaire/ security officer working for ABC radio station 3LO . Clive James arrived to do an interview with presenter Terry Laidler , and whilst waiting in the studio lobby prior to being interviewed I respectfully asked him about his familiarity with the Sydney suburb where he had been reared , as I too had spent my formative years in that same area. With unexpected gruffness , he exclaimed that it was none of my business and that I should listen to the interview. This public belittling was humiliating . More revealingly however , was upon recounting this episode to a few broadcasters, they averred that in the journalistic fraternity he had notoriety for arrogance. With all the current tributes and plaudits I think some more fuller perspective is warranted. Image and reality.....

The ABC is invaluable. Clive James is the best of us. Germaine Greer isn't far behind. Compared to peanuts like Scomo the contrast is starker than night and day.

Miss. Clive on TV and in the paper...I hope the last volume of his memoirs is released soon..I think he said he'd written 10,000 words of them in one of his later interviews.

The World's collective IQ took a beating ths week as both Clive James and Jonathan Miller died. In the current intelectual climate it's a fair question to ask as to whether we will see their like again.

One of my mothers generation of reverse emigrants from Oz. Only the tip of the James intellectberg got onto tv. His writing is a true legacy. A sad day. I will go and read Falling towards England and laugh myself sick.
