I picked up two different models from from Cloner Alliance just last week and I have to say I am really impressed with the results. I've only done old VHS and standard 8mm so far and it really does a great job. I'm very much a geek for all sorts of AV/radio/computer equipment but I don't have the electronics knowledge to do repairs. Started briefly many years ago but got sidetracked by life, lol.

In my review of it I did a side-by-side comparison with using an old DV Handycam to do video capture, and the Handycam totally blows it away in image quality. Also my Cloner Alliance box glitched out when using bitrates above 10 Mbps and had weird audio compression artifacts (like the treble abruptly cutting in and out).
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Год назад
First of all using your handicam to digitize is a totally different animal. DV is 5:1 fix compression MJ peg and requires 25 megabits per second so about 12 GB per hour to store footage. Unless you have unlimited hard drive space this is really not that practical because you're going to burn up a lot of real estate real quick for standard definition video. I always offer DV capture as an option to my customers and when they find out that the files take 12 gigs per hour they always want them as an mp4 file because everybody wants to upload stuff to the cloud or to share with family. What I did find is that saving to a USB stick playing it back on the device itself there was some glitching due to the USB stick not being fast enough however most of the shots you saw on the video were actually captured to the USB stick. silly me when I did the initial capture to the hard drive and neglected to check whether it was in 1080 or 720 and everything was captured at 7:20 so I went back and redid the shots at 1080 saving them to the USB stick I just dumping that over to the computer to edit and as you can see there was no problem with the footage done on the USB stick. I did test it extensively although I didn't show the shots from Jurassic Park but I did capture the tape and played it back both on my TV and through computer and it played fine. I didn't use the highest bit rate I use mid, we'll probably go back and turn the bit rate up and see if I noticed any noticeable difference but for capturing VHS tapes it looked good and it was a hell of a lot faster than doing it with a DV camera. To capture a 2-hour analog tape on this device takes 2 hours and you have a very acceptable mp4 file that nobody is going to complain about. To do the same thing using DV would take 2 hours to capture if not longer because gaps in the tape where people didn't record something for several seconds quite often cause capture cards to bomb out and then you got to start again but in addition to that if someone wants it in MP4 you then have to compress it and that's going to take another 30 minutes or so to take it 2 hour avi file and turn it into an mp4. So from a business perspective this is a no-brainer this allows real-time capture and the quality is more than acceptable. If you don't find the quality coming off this box acceptable then that's a you problem because I looked at it very closely and I think I have a pretty good eye for quality and I found the quality to be more than acceptable especially considering that is coming off of a VHS tape which was crap to begin with. Half the time when I get tapes to digitize for clients they're not even the original tape, the people shot their original home videos on an 8mm camcorder then they copied it to VHS in the EP speed, and then possibly made another copy of that. You know the saying garbage and garbage out. I did do a comparison at the end but you may not have seen yet because the video hasn't been up that long or I took footage from an hdv tape and I captured it using analog and HDMI and took the direct data dump over firewire and compared all three if I didn't tell you which one was which you wouldn't know other than the fact that the firewire transfer had a drop out which caused a nice big red flash on the screen which didn't happen using the video out from the dv player because the dv player has memory and it buffered the data loss which wasn't buffered when it was transferred by firewire so the lost data caused a glitch in the video. I might do another demo or I capture some hdv tapes using firewire complete with all the glitches and then go back and play the same tape and use the HDMI or component out and captured on the cloner box and run the two of them split screen see if you can spot the difference between the two. They should both be pretty close and you will spot the difference when glitches show up dropouts on the firewire transfer because there's no dropout compensation. When you play a DV or hdv tape any dropouts just show up as lost data on the firewire as there's no compensation made. At least going through the video circuits of the camera or the playback machine in this case it has memory so if there's a dropout it retains the data from the prior frame and you generally don't even notice it.

Can this capture audio in LPCM like my DVD recorder? This is important for many of my old vids as the audio pros prefer that to DD to remove artifacts. Otherwise, I might just pick one up just to play with it a bit. I have all new equipment including 500 GB SSDs and a new Asus R7 laptop…
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Год назад
@@hawleygriffon9290 well first SSD is not something you want to use for writing video too. All solid state drives have a limited number of write cycles and video is write intensive. I don't see any options for PCM audio it seems to be MP3 at 384 kilobits. I haven't played with the high quality setting yet I've only used the mid quality but at that data rate is 12 megabits per second MP4 which is pretty good for a 1080 stream. In the coming weeks when I sit down and play with this unit more I'll do some tests at the different encoding modes low mid and high so a direct comparison can be done between the three quality modes for both standard definition and high definition content. I'll do a more in depth and analyst of the files and so forth. This one was more of a demo to show what it does and how good it looks, the next one will be a deep dive into the files and so forth to see how it compares to my other capture cards and equipment that have acquired over the years. For example I'll compare firewire transferred DV to analog captured DV and analog tapes digitized over firewire using the DV deck or the digital 8 camera. Expect that in the next couple weeks. I just got a bunch of stuff in that needs to be serviced so once I get my backlog cleared up a bit and I have some time then I'll do a deeper dive on this unit but so far everything that I have tested on it has been perfect.

Looking at the output you have shown, I would be happy with one of these. @12voltvids
@12voltvids Год назад
The size of the hard drive is whatever you plug into it. The drive I was using for testing was a 500 gig but I could have easily put a terabyte or a larger. If you are using FAT32 then the largest capacity is 32 gigs but NTFS or ex fat you're limited by the file size of the operating system. the only reason it only recorded for 3 minutes is because that's what I said it for you can have the thing continually record until the hard drive is full it'll just keep on recording. In its current setting it breaks the file size at 4 GB but I see that that's also adjustable so that you could have files that were much larger than 4 gigabytes in size but I haven't taken it to the max yet what you see is what I found on it during my initial unpacking and demo, I will be using it and doing more extensive testing on it, I'm going to digitize a couple of tapes that I have of my own content that I can put up so that you can see how it works and how it looks and I'll probably use the highest bit rate I had it set to the default which was medium. I plan to do some comparison using some hdv tapes transferring the content over firewire and HDMI into the cloner pro at the same time so the same tape pass will be recorded directly through the firewire onto the computer and onto an external hard drive on the cloner pro that way I can play the tape once get two files from it and we can compare the direct capture over firewire to the HDMI output from the video player. I'll do the same with a standard definition mini DV tape and probably do an analog tape as well using the firewire converter on my digital 8 camcorder to digitize a hiat tape and take the AV output and capture that. Should be an interesting one it will be all on the quality of the video there'll be no demo features like in this one it will all 100% be capture video compare the quality as I've got this unit as an archive device for my business so I fully intend to use it and I want to see what is capabilities are and what the best settings are to make it look it's best. So far though I'm pretty impressed as you probably saw from the clips from the Blu-ray disc I think I answered the question as to whether it will record protected content. I did a macrovation test as well and the results were the same. As I said I would tell you if it didn't record protected content and I didn't mention anything about it not recording protected content. That's as far as I'm going to take it however because RU-vid is pretty strict on anything that can be used to deal with circumvention of anti-copy technology. I got a community guideline strike and you're only allowed one for showing how to manually apply an update from the developers website to a piece of software that would allow you to download streaming content. They blocked the video and gave me a community guidelines strike for dangerous content. I appealed it it was manually reviewed and the strike was upheld. I guess some snowflake at RU-vid thought that downloading streaming content was a dangerous thing, even though you could watch the same content. The same thing happened to everyone that was doing videos dealing with a certain piece of software that was derived from Xbox media center. I don't even want to say the name of it but it starts with k. many people that reviewed that software found that they had violated RU-vid's terms of service and found their accounts demonetized or restricted. I know a guy who did a video showing how to clone a Sirius XM radio so that he could pay for one subscription and get it in his car and home without having to pay for a second subscription. His video was also blocked. He wasn't showing people how to get free satellite radio he was just showing how to take an existing radio and copy the ID from that radio into another radio so that it would be a clone of the original. it involved pulling the chip out of an original radio reading it and then programming that contents into a blank chip and installing that in the second radio. Not something that the average person could do without specialized equipment but still RU-vid took exception to it and removed the video.

well I, My Dad, My Brother and my best friend has had one of these since 2017. We Record anything and everything, BUT we did notice we had to buy a cheap $30 HDMI switcher to bypass any HCDP. Thats so you can use your DVD, blu ray player hooked up to it, or any signal producing a HCDP signal. We all have those HDMI switchers installed, so we record ANYTHING we want, no matter what it is. I have about a 1 in 6 failure rate of a corrupt recording each to I try a long recording with it plus 90min, I have software that will correct the corrupted file. I find it easier to use fat32 with 2gb recorded files, more stable recordings and easier just to correct 1 - 2gb file than an entire 8 to 13gb single file using NTFS. I use a 128gb USB 3.0 Samsung flash drive. I have tried many of these and even though its not perfect its the most stable and trouble free on I have ever used. I only use it now 3-4x a year, but it works and records each time I need to. Its great when you buy a HD recording from Amazon prime and need a backup of it for your own records.

Too time consuming. I have a 1200 capture card. I will be putting this up against it in the next few weeks and we will see what works better. If you are just doing your own and don't mind wasting a few hours scaling and rendering that's fine but when you are converting tapes for clients you can't be tying up the computer for hours on end digitizing and then rendering out files. Customers won't pay that much. Needs to be just play the tape and hand them a watchable file. People won't pay more. Shoot i still get people that want old home movies done with a projector and camera if they can get it done cheaper than scanning. They want VHS and 8mm tapes copied for 10 bucks a pop. Can't do that using computer as computer is tied up for hours. This will let me dump tapes to USB stick directly and hand to client. I don't care if i can make it 1or 2% better, this is more than good enough. I was amazed how good that big broadcast pal betacam looks. Amazing.

@12voltvids
@12voltvids Год назад
@@elektrokinesis4150 my workstation is built specifically for editing. That's where I do my RU-vid cutting and any other paid production work that I do. The problem is if I'm using that workstation for archiving someone's tapes I can't do anything else at the same time. So either the archiving has to back up until I don't have any editing to do or the editing has to be put on hold while I do an archive job. This capture box on the other hand allows me to keep the archiving and production operations separate I can be archiving a tape or tapes, because it's generally not just one tape I get when a client brings me tape say typically bring me a box of 20 or 30 or more tapes to archive, it can do its thing with just a VCR the capture box and a monitor with a hard drive plugged into it. It can do its thing and I can work on editing on the workstation without interruption. back in the day when everyone wanted tapes put on to DVD that was fairly easy I just used a DVD recorder. I still do because many of my clients still want their tapes digitized on the DVD. They usually want a second copy on a memory stick or hard drive as well, which meant burning to a DVD then ripping the DVD and producing a file. I can still do that send the signal through a distribution amplifier into the DVD recorder and then into the capture box and hit both record buttons at the same time but now I can produce their DVD and produce a digital copy onto the hard drive at the same time. It's all about increasing productivity and saving time and this will certainly do that. Showing this off however is a double-edged sword because once people see how good the quality is why pay someone like me to archive their tapes just go out and buy the box do it yourself. Just like with the wolverine scanner, yes showing it off and showing how it works might cut into the archiving business a bit because anybody who has enough films that it would cost more than buying the machine to have me do it it's just going to buy the machine and do it themself. But they're always be those people that have a few tapes or a few films that will have me archive them for them. With camera tapes and VHS tapes especially when people don't have equipment to play them back on it makes it more lucrative to send them out but someone who's got a working camera if they've got a bunch of tapes would be further ahead just to buy one of these boxes and do it themself but if they had to buy a camera and the box to do it then they're further ahead just to send them out and have them done and those are the customers that I attract.
@elektrokinesis4150
@elektrokinesis4150 Год назад
@@12voltvids I'm not saying my method is better, I was just explaining how I do it. In my experience, people who no longer have the means or ability to play back their precious media are more likely to use archival/transfer services. Showing people this box will only affect people who still own a vcr, and it still won't provide any services like editing or physical media. The majority of people I do work for couldn't be bothered to take the time to dump their own media and edit it together. Regarding the PCs, I have a (scrap bin) PC specifically for recording video to a raid array, which is accessible as a shared drive on my main workstation. Since it's used mainly for vfx and streaming, I have a duplicate capture device in my main workstation as well (AJA Kona LHe), and a matrix switcher to direct video to whatever destination I need it to go to. It's a 16x16 component + composite video matrix with a lot of gear hooked up to it that can be chained together. @Elektrokinesis because RU-vid frowns on any circumvention of electronic locks for security. I got one for explaining how to update software but the software they deemed was illegal because it allowed people to download RU-vid videos at full quality music videos that they were protecting so because the software allowed you to download their protective music videos and they're protected movies that they would rent they deemed that illegal and they took it down. I don't need to get another bullshit community guidelines strike and I have the likes of Mr Johnny send check that goes crying to RU-vid every time he sees something that he thinks might be a guideline violation and files complaints. According to the MattKC video this cant actually record in 720X480. It upscales to something else rather than leave the video as it was. Can you confirm this? Also, I notice their multimedia connector goes into a HDMI port labeled multimedia. But can't the same connector work in the regular HDMI input port as well? I guess it would help so you don't have to unplug cables but then the same cable should also work on the UHD Pro version except that it doesn't even have a setting for standard definition. Seems to be a glaring oversight or else they want you to buy 2 devices...
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Год назад
All video is recorded as either 720p or 1080p. Standard def 480i or 576i (pal) is scaled up to either 720 or 1080 depending on what you set it to and I'd course 4:3 or 16:9 again you change that with the remote. The mmi connector is the same physical plug as HDMI but it is not HDMI it is rgbhv, y r-y b-y, composite and l r audio. By the time you add the grounds that is 14 pins if the connector used. The 4k gamer is a different market use. It will pass through 4k to tv and stream 1080. This one is designed to record as a stand alone device. It can also stream 1080 and lower video. 2 different products with different intended uses. It is not that they want you to buy 2, they are targeting different users. The other one for me is pretty useless as i don't want to have Mr computer tied up when digitizing video. This one records direct to USB media no pc required.

Luckily, I have several computers that are in different rooms so I can do just this. A dedicated capping area would be best but I'm wondering what the computer input does that the standalone mode doesn't and what other software works with this? Too bad I can't just hook this up to the new Chromebook I bought awhile back for $99 unless I can find some capping software that also works on ChromeOS or Android. Hello, I did capture PAL. The sequence from the Betacam at the end was pal. The record rate is selected by the output device. If you plug it into a PAL market TV the HDMI interface detects it is a 50hz display and captures ar 50hz. My TV it is connected to is a 60hz display, and as such everything is set to display at 60hz. Once I deal with the backlog of stuff that's sitting in the shop now to be looked at I will dig out some of my own tapes in various formats and I'm going to do some fairly extensive testing comparing different capture devices that I have including some professional capture devices and we will see how the stacks up to some of my really expensive because I have a digitizer that was about $1,400. We'll see how it stacks up to that also compare it to DVDs that have been ripped and will import everything in see how it looks it should be interesting because I'll I'll send it out at 1080p because this capture box captures everything at 1080p so we'll look at its internal scaling it's hardware scaling versus some standard definition content that I have to upscale and software to make it fit the frame we'll see how they stack up I'm betting that this is going to look better.

I note a few problems with this company's devices from replies on Amazon. Many seem to be quality control ones where the unit stops working after awhile. It would have even great to have had you tear down the unit to see what makes it tick. Other problems seem to be long recordings being split into chunks or recommendations from that company to record in eXFAT over NTFS as its more stable. News to me since I've been recording to NTFS for a long time now. Also, seems better to record to SSDs than platter HDDs. Limited use for ne as I would have to convert to Mpeg2 to make DVDs. I only have 1 portable player that can accept MP4s and play them directly from a disc or flash drive. The higher end unit also has trouble with some UHD content. I was considering that unit over this one but I must reevaluate what I can use it for. I still have a $100 credit with Amazon so the cost isn't going to break me even if I do get the higher priced unit. All in all though a great video and an interesting device, warts and all...

That would include OTA, NTSC, ATSC 1.0-3.0, VHS, Betamax, component video--anything. Just as an example, I recorded a film from a streaming service and my specs are: length, 2h11m35s, 1920x1080,16.9Mbps Data Rate, 30fps, 195kbps bit rate. As far as I can tell, you are only limited by the original signal and the specs/quality on the rest of equipment. The Haupaggue HDPVR it's good but like all other capture boxes that I've tried in the past if you lose sync on the video such as when someone stopped recording took the tape out of their camera and then put it back in and did not cue it up to the last scene and there's a segment of snow, that tended to crash the capture device. When it crashed you have to do a power cycle to get it back. This is because the random Snow or noise created so much data that the onboard processor couldn't keep up when it was turning out an mp4 stream. Now on the other hand if the video was played through a time-based corrector first so that the synchronizing pulses were all kept at the correct timing and the correct amplitude it wouldn't crash you just got snow recorded although the snow didn't have much detail because of the limited bandwidth to try to encode random noise. For the HD PVR I always ran the video through a videonics mx1 first. But that box I used to use mostly for recording HD content off my cable box that I wanted to keep so there was no disruption in the sync signal. you have to remember though that that old capture box is very old I'm on my second one because the first one just died after about 10 years of use so I would expect the modern units to have a bunch faster processor and it's all based on USB 3 now versus the old one which was USB 2. I still have an old hauppauge tuner card in the computer that I haven't used in years I'm curious of whether it still works. I could connect the TV antenna to it and record HD off the air signals and they look great but then again I haven't done it for years and years. This one is basically the answer to my dreams because I'll be able to make a hard copy back up of anything that's on TV basically. rather than firing up the computer in the HD PVR to record something off my cable box I can just record it directly on this. I will be however making a comparison I'll record some stuff using the HD PVR in 1080i and compare it to the 1080p that comes out of this box on an HD TV signal. I'll probably do some stuff where I can do some longer recordings of different sources and compare between different devices maybe next weekend. I don't usually do videos on the weekend I don't do repairs on the weekend because those are my normal work days. I generally only produce videos on my days off which is during the week, so perhaps on the weekend if I have time I'll sit down with a couple of different capture cards and do a comparison between different devices that I own the digitize video so a direct comparison of the same material between the different devices can be made I think that might be an interesting comparison. Compare some standard deaf video that's been captured to DVD and ripped, digitized using the hauppauge HD PVR analog input, digitized using the cloner box, and digitize using my digitally camcorders firewire output directly into the computer. Four different devices same video should yield four different qualities and we'll see which one looks and sounds the best. Stay tuned.

Imagine spending 60 minutes capturing an hdv tape only to find out after that nothing was saved computer needs to restart and spend another hour getting it to work. Hours on the phone with Adobe looking for solution and the only solution they could come up with the "free" upgrade to creative cloud that comes with a 9.95 USD a month recurring charge to use it and edit my videos. Not exactly a free upgrade. I wiped win10 and went back to 7. Everything works as it is supposed to and I never get a crash these days. I put a SMART monitor on to check drive health and my drives started randomly disconnecting. I thought it was a bad drive but the new drive did the same. I figured it was the SMART monitor removed it and went back to my faster 7200rpm drive. I don't use the PC online except to upload RU-vid videos. On fact I am probably the least user of the internet. I don't surf at all, and I don't do social media. I have a slow dsl connection even though 2.5gig fiber is right there 2 feet from my modem. Just haven't had the need to upgrade. If RU-vid kills uploads from old chrome version I will find the cheapest laptop to upload with but my main computer is not upgrading. The version of windows is also not even current as far as win7 goes. I updated my laptop to the last patch for win7 and it slowed substantially. Some day when this computer blows up I will buy some parts and build a new one, but I will have to find a new editor program and learn all over again because the day I have to pay 10 a month is the day i quit. I don't buy into any subs. No Netflix Amazon, Spotify Disney. I have basic cable with the movie pack and that is it.
