LVR powder is my favorite in 223, I like 25 gr with a Hornady 75 bthp. This powder is easy to find also.

Put the pipe down and slowly back away Johnny. 😂😂😂 You’ve been spoiled with an exceptionally accurate barrel. Anything sub moa is considered excellent in the AR platform. 1/2 groups are extraordinary and unusual in anything but purpose built precision rifles. Being disappointed with .66 and .72 groups with LVR powder is.........ridiculous. Someone had to tell you, lol.

I just did a workup with LVR and ended up with almost the exact same results... 77 smk 25.3 gr in LC brass. 0.74" 5 shot groups at 2730 avg (14.5 SD) in an 18" barrel. Have also found LVR likes 175smk in 308 win. really a hidden gem of a powder. Absolutely exceptional.

Hey Johnny... Two questions. First, when will we see an H335 video for the 77 grain? Next, what powder that you've tested so far would be best for the 77 grain bullet in a 16" barrel? AR Comp I imagine? I'm chasing mostly velocity, I can do with 1 MOA.

Getting back into reloading after a 30 year break! And that was almost exclusively pistol reloading. So, I apologize if this is a silly question..... Wouldn't it be better to choose a slightly "bigger" group with the lowest SD, rather than choosing the "tightest" group, that actually has one of the highest SD? At only 100 yds is one thing but, out at distance, say 6-800 yds. Isnt that high SD going to kill the groups?

If the bullet can be loaded to mag length in an AR10 or an AR15 you can use RL15 to good effect. You can drive 55 to 77 grain grain bullets to NATO spec velocities with RL15. You can also drive 150 to 175 grain 30 caliber bullets in the AR10 to proper velocities with the same powder. Powders like RL15 CFE223, TAC, AA2520 are very flexible in this regard. Also, because they are all ball powders, they will meter from progressive presses like the Dillon XL650 and the Hornady Lock-n-load progressive very well.

Very good video!! If you ever get time, I’d love to see a comparison video of different bullet seating methods. I was watching an old Sierra video with David tubb. He always seated the bullets by turning the case 4-5 times while seating his bullets and claimed it helped with runout. It would be interesting to see if that improves accuracy vs seating the bullet in one long stroke
@JohnnysReloadingBench
@JohnnysReloadingBench 7 лет назад
I love those Tubbs videos. Packed full of great information. I sometimes do the turn-the-case-while-seating method but don't really have a good way to test it. It's not something that is going to make enough difference for you to see consistently in 5 shot groups at 100 yards. His experience of tens of thousands of rounds in competition tells me it's probably useful!

I disassembled some BH 223 myself and believe it has the same powder as the 556 and also found after dissasembly of the barnes 556 vortx, it uses the same powder as the BH 223. Have you dialed in which powder is the BH factory powder? Is it the 2520 you originally thought or is the 2000mr a consideration? May I ask what is your conclusion? HEY JOHNNY THE PRIMER POCKETS ARE WEARING OUT PREMATURLY BECAUSE YOU GRIND THE POCKETS INSTEAD OF SWAGING, WE RAN INTO THE SAME THING TILL WE WENT TO SWAGING INSTEAD OF USING A TRIMMING OR GRINDING METHOD.
@JohnnysReloadingBench
@JohnnysReloadingBench 7 лет назад
I do not ream the primer pockets. The RCBS Military Crimp remover tool only removes the crimp area. You underestimate the extremely high pressure loads we're shooting in this series. Normal pressure is generally 10+ reloads with LC no problem.
@tier1armorychannel53
@tier1armorychannel53 6 лет назад
I get the high pressure with the series, but think about it when you grind/ scrape with your method you are removing brass = removing support for the primer pocket that removed brass was the previous support for the primer. if you swage the pocket it takes the crimp and puts it back into its support role / restores the integrity of the case . if the brass is removed the support is compromised. We are both missing the point that with these pressures in this series is exactly why there are crimps in the first place. :) Thanks again Bro for all you do, we salute you Sir.

@fishrrelaxing9361
@fishrrelaxing9361 7 лет назад
I think you need to rerun your load data. Yes the mk12 is 18” barrel and the mk262 was designed specifically for it.. however you are forgetting that it’s a DI system. Burn rates and charges are going to be slightly off cause the gas port is bleeding off pressure which to me explains why you are having some velocity issues. IMO it would be better to select powder for a 90+ % burn for the length of the gas system length not the barrel length. You went about this as if you were shooting a bolt action not a DI. You are loosing pressure between port and muzzle. If I’m right you’re entire powder selection is a little too slow on the burn and you need something hotter.

@thisislongbecausetheothern8657
Love your work and your generally analytical nature. I don’t think you leave anything on the table. I have found that logarithmic trend lines are a better fit for velocity prediction in various barrel lengths. I know you like to use linear trend lines when graphing but give a logarithmic one a try sometime. To that end, I x-y graphed your velocities vs charge weight of 2000-MR, inserted a logarithmic trend line (which was the best fit vs a linear one), and had it give me the equation for the trend line. This equation gives me an estimate of 26.53 grains for 2757 f/s. FYI, you might blow your face off.
