Mama protecting her babies.

I live up here in Alaska. Fences near freeways put up is actually to protect the moose from charging into the roadways. It cuts down the numbers from vehicles hitting them. Not only does it provide protection for the drivers, but it also protects the moose from getting struck and killed. I have seen a lot of moose coming out of nowhere while driving. I have seen them dead on the side of the road from being hit by a vehicle. I hope this will help more ppl understand why there are fences put up near freeways. We actually need a lot more put up by the freeways.
@Alexandrovan

Yep, it helps both sides. Hopefully soon we will have cars that can predict animals coming on the road and don't need fences anymore:)

I understand completely, but wild animals don't understand human created boundaries that are meant to protect them. What is needed is underground passageways. Possibly not capable there? Much love ove from a much warmer southern state!

What choice did it have,it's trapped between the fence & the highway??
@Alexandrovan
@Alexandrovan Месяц назад
It's definitely a tough situation for the moose, being caught between the fence and highway. While there are entry points in the fence that allow moose to pass through, it can still be challenging for them to navigate safely in such a confined space. Wildlife crossings and better habitat management could help in such scenarios. Thanks for raising this important point!

This kind of thing can happen anywhere where moose are present. We had a moose outside our perimeter fence one afternoon and everyone who was supposed to go off shift had to wait until Security positioned their vehicles between the parking area and the moose. The oncoming shift waited in their cars or on the buses until it was safe. Operations had to wait for the people who were relieving them to get inside and take turnover and the buses had to wait until everyone who was going home on them, could get out there and on board. Crazy situation, but the moose is always in charge.

Looks like that mother moose & her calves got in a dead-end situation. They obviously couldn't move on through that huge fence, and must have somehow crossed that busy highway to get there. They effectively trapped themselves in. Wonder if anything was done to help them out. The charge at the cyclist was purely natural instinct, so no blame on the moose, of course. Possibly the cyclist didn't look over far enough ahead to see there might be a situation to avoid, and rode into harm's way.

You're right, it's a tough spot for both the moose and the cyclist. Mama moose was just protecting her babies, and the cyclist didn't have much time to react. It’s all part of the wild and unpredictable encounters we get here in Alaska! Sometimes, nature just takes its course.

Yes, that gate on the right is part of the Air Force base. These gates have entry doors that allow moose to get in but not out, which can create a challenging situation for them.
