Another way to find your range before your opponent does is using the long step jab, or the power jab, and from there a whole combo once you're inside!

This will only work on an inexperienced boxer. This isn't anything special. It's basic boxing.

In the title it says “anyone can learn” judging based off of that you shouldn’t expect world championship level fighting advice.

I don't think it's a worthy idea, a gazelle punch (even more poorly done, since gazelle punches travel longer distances) is not a good idea for shortening distances in contexts like this, it needs to be done in more advanced moments of the fight where there will be focus on many things presented, doing this in an initial and reactive phase is simply the call for a frontal encounter blow! A good and deceptive way to shorten the distance is to bring the back leg closer to the front leg, and then move forward with the front leg (it would be the concept of walking forward in the opposite order, so you will have the posture to move forward a lot while being in the same place).

Do you mean like a pendulum step / shuffle type thing? I feel like the fundamentals of footwork feel really limiting for me. Yeah I'm not a pro so my own inability is obviously a factor, but when I see videos that say "don't bring your feet together" or "move in a certain direction with the opposite side leg first" it doesn't always seem right to me. It feels more natural to bring the rear foot forward at times (which is what I think you're saying), or do other things that aren't meant to be done... I kinda wish there were more videos showing the rules being broken because the standard "push off the rear foot and step with the lead first and jab" feels in some way more robotic, telegraphed and slow to me
@RealGunSlingers
@RealGunSlingers 4 месяца назад
@@stefanjackson1127 Some fighters switch stances, in order to switch stances you have to cross your feet. My coach would say that u must switch stances when you are either too close or too far. With that there are probably other reasons why you can break that rule, but I don’t think you ever want your feet to stay together. Because you would be off balance. I believe what he’s talking about is just taking a half step forward with the rear leg only because it brings you closer in range while seemingly it looks like you didn’t move. Not bringing your feet together
@stefanjackson1127
@stefanjackson1127 3 месяца назад
@@RealGunSlingers this makes so much sense to me. Thank you for sharing the info. I feel like using the fundamentals are rigid. I know the basics are taught so beginners don't lose balance and have a base to throw everything from and defend... But it's few and far between I ever see a video of someone teaching when to switch stances, bring feet together etc

1:05 to 1:08 is a good example. Boxing is all about keeping your off the center line when you enter the distance. Notice when he steps, he’s stepping diagonally towards his right (Onyeik’s left) and his head is moving towards the right as he punches.
