Thanks for this. After watching several videos on suit jacket measurements, yours was the first that answered my question as to how actual measurements relate to stated size. Good job.
This was extremely helpful for me. I work for a high-end men’s consignment e-commerce store and am trying to get accustomed to working with menswear. I find suit jackets and coats the most difficult and my boss has me measuring them flat on a table. Hanging them seems more appropriate. Off topic, for the most accurate sleeve measurement on a dress SHIRT do prefer to start from the middle of the collar directly down to the center of the cuff or from the shoulder to the cuff? I have been measuring shoulder to cuff and seem to be getting returns for “wrong fit”... Thank you in advance!!
Unless specifically listed, you never know how they measure the back length of the jacket. I just watched another video for Ebay & he said the back should be measured from the bottom of the collar to the hem. This guy just measured from the seam UNDER the collar to the hem, which will probably be 1-1.5" longer than the other guy. Then, others measure from the top of the collar to the hem, which would make the same jacket appear to be 2" longer than the guy that measures from the bottom of the collar (BOC). So, the exact same jacket would be listed as 30" length by the first guy, 31" by this guy, & 32" by the top of the collar to the hem, guy. If you're looking for a specific length, you must know how they measured the jacket.
Thanks - very professional and thorough. I have a bunch of vintage men's clothes which I got at Salvation Army 10 yrs ago for $2 each - about 10 blazers & sports coats, a few 2-or 3-piece suits, a raincoat and 4 or so pairs of pants, mostly from the 70s. (I love them, some are so funny with their partial linings of wild prints, their Western yokes, their self-belts on the back etc.) Now I know how to size them and sell them. Some are very nice like a double-breasted wool Lanvin 2-piece and a 3-piece made by Levi's. Do you happen to know how to tell if a suit is a custom "bespoke" one?
The length of the T jacket would be between 2"-3" longer than the R jacket & the sleeve length would be the same 2"-3" longer for the T jacket. This also means the waist, hip & most likely the chest measurement areas would move down on the T jacket.
Thank you for this video. I would love a video on measuring the suit pants and an explanation on the different types of pants closures and suspender buttons and anything else. Very interesting. Also you spoke about American designers, but do Italian suit and jackets differ in sizing from American designers??? Thank you again.
