Clothing Guide | How To Survive The Long Dark

Clothing in The Long Dark is a more nuanced mechanic that first meets the eye. To survive The Long Dark, you'll need to stay warm, and clothing is the primary way you do this! Clothing not only has warmth value, but also several other buffs and stats that affect how good each item of clothing is. Keeping in mind the different stats of the clothes and what your primary and secondary need with clothes is, you can select the outfit and gear that will supplement your run the best!
If you find yourself struggling with wolves, and surviving the encounters, perhaps checking out your protection stat and picking a wardrobe that buffs that out will help! If you find yourself plenty warm but with never enough room to carry all you need to, perhaps you should shed a few layers of clothes!

I could do that, but I think it all depends on the goals and needs of the player at the time. The purpose of this guide was to go over the essentials to make sure that new players know how clothing works. I suppose I could make one on outfits but I typically always go for the 'maximum warmth bonus' clothing so... my opinion might be a bit skewed lol.

Difficulty can change how much weather affects you so for the easiest difficulty you would be fine for a while with not trying to push your gear to the extreme and have good mobility but for the harder diffiulties where temperature and wind are brutal you have to aim for the thickest clothing

@@Lonelywolfofficial I think it would be good to include some examples to showcase the points you discussed. I kind of think of it as a math formula and you need several sample questions to prove your points. I think as an experienced TLD players will probably get what you are saying because of corresponding experience, but new players will probably have a hard time associating.

@@Lonelywolfofficial Also showing some of this stuff on the screen, instead of just random clips in the background, would be really helpful. When you talk about the protection bonus, show the icon on screen (maybe with some example values). When you're talking about how the math for the wind chill works, put numbers over the video as a math problem to show what you mean. Since you gave multiple examples of how the wind chill works out, show multiple at the same time. Also, if you can get a clip of you taking off and putting on an item in windy conditions to show the feel like temp changing. Show wet clothes, show frozen clothes, etc. Sorry, I'm a visual thinker & learner, so I like to see everything.

@@jacqslabz I was actually thinking the same thing, it’s sometimes distracting when the visuals and audio do not align, but that’s a lot more work for him, so I get why the scenes are not created like a TV show. Good and uploaded is better than perfect and not uploaded :)

Good video. There's an important aspect of clothing you forgot to mention in the video, maybe you could edit in a caption using the YT editor near the end of the video as this is a pretty significant one. There are 2 items of clothes that can scare off wolves if you're wearing them: 1 - the wolfskin coat 2- the bearskin goat. Wearing either of those as a % chance whenever a wolf spots you that it will go straight into fear mode and run away from you instead of stalking or charging you. If you're carrying a fresh kill through wolf territory, this bonus can be huge and save a run that may have otherwise ended in a deadly wolf struggle or series of them. I've had situations where I stumbled into a wolf in the fog or dark or around a blind hill/curve while low on condition and because I was wearing one of these items, the wolf squealed and ran away instead of charging me, which it would have done guaranteed had I not been wearing the wolf/bear skin coat.

This is one of those things that I consider to be a 'smaller feature' or tip related to specific items rather than a system wide mechanic, which if I have the time or believe it's important, I'll mention. I've been collecting a lot of these to dump into a generalized 'tip' video that isn't focused on a specific mechanic or topic and therefore can have tips ranging from all across TLD!

@@Lonelywolfofficial Good idea, there are many more obscure effects or options many might not think of but can have a huge affect on your games. The wolf fear clothes are 1 such item, and have saved my run or saved resources from not having to shoot at problem wolves so many times, yet many seem to be unaware of this benefit. EDIT: could make it a part of a "unconventional ways to scare/deal with wolves video or something.

@@Seriously_Unserious i wasnt into survival mode until recently but i have a good run with around 85 days now. I have both wolf and bear coat and the % to avoid a wolf is pretty high. Id say like 35% . Would also be great if u could cover whats a good combination. Currently i decide on the weather situation which cloth i want to wear, i try to upgrade it so i dont loose too much sprint. Bear coat is a must though. But there are clothes like ski-shoes who are usually not worth it. Deer shoes instead. Wish there would be more to craft though like wolf skin for hands. Once u have the wolf coat u dont get much use out of their skin anymore

I believe that the Balaclava also has a chance to scare wolves. I've had them run away a few times, even though I didn't have the coats, only the ski mask.

@@SenkoVT If you can find the mucklucks, those have about the same stats as the deer boots, but are way lighter and have significantly less effect on your sprint meter. In my current run, I've not been so lucky as to find any mucklucks though, so it's the heavy, slow deerskin boots for me.

1:21 I think you've mistaken because the INNER legs are the two first at the bottom, and the OUTER at the top; the same applies to torso.

I just had a very interesting idea. Ice skates, to move on ice faster and use less stamina then sprinting, movement speed is the same as any other footwear on snow but suffers a penalty when walking on stone metal or wood. To repair a whetstone and cured leather would be needed

I have a couple tips regarding clothing. First keep your irreplaceable clothes in top condition, and second is to keep extra clothes such as wool sweaters and wool toques.

Wool is your friend! Sewing is the best skill IMO. Im new to the game, so im still learning. Layers are important. Wind and water resistant clothes use on the outer layers.

Defense is definitely overrated in most situations. As long as you’re somewhat near shelter and have full condition, stripping naked before a wolf jumps you is a much better option than taking the durability hit to your clothes. You can pop a few bandages and some old man’s beard on there and you’ll be just fine, but using up sewing kits to repair clothes is much more wasteful

THIS is important information. Putting on layers of clothing to stave off cold is obvious as a new player, but it also makes you think wearing more armored clothing does the same. For example in my campaign playthrough, after comparing New Work Pants and New Combat Pants, I decided to replace my old gear with both, as they seemed to give a marginally lower cold protection, for more physical. But being curious how Protection works, I googled it and found out it did not stack, which brought me to this video.

Nice video! :) do u also know what it means that my (for example) rabbit hat, that once was said it was new, now says its "worn" even tho it is again on 100%? Do clothes also loose stats in time so IT's kinda ment to craft new ones sooner or later ?

I don't believe so, that might actually be a bug. I'd check into that. Clothes delineations are supposed to be based off of the condition they're at, not length of existence.

How to carry water bottles ? or how to stock them ? I have seen videos or screenshots that people just leave them in their camping caves. I only have that one big bottle

It depends on how much you drop at a time. Water bottles are generated out of thin air, essentially. Once you collect the water, from whatever source, it just exists as that in your backpack till you drop it. Once you drop it, how much of it you drop determines the bottle size.

The difference between the decay rates from doing that is so small as to be negligible. I would not recommend it.

This topic reminds me of another "how to survive the long dark" type video I saw some dude post to youtube and link to from the TLD forums on Steam. In he he advises players to wear only a t-shirt, jeans and running shoes. Basically only the crap clothes everyone who pays any attention to in TLD take off as soon as we can find something better. His reasoning is those clothes are so light the don't debuff sprinting so you can just run everywhere and get to the next indoor location before the cold gets you. The funny thing was how the guy reacted when the game's vets all at first politely corrected him on this bad strategy and he went apesh** and threw a temper tantrum on the forum. It was kind of funny to see a dude take a game that seriously that he felt the need to throw a fit because people disagreed politely with a strategy he was recommending.

I mean, the strategy is trash on any difficulty above voyager, but being open to understanding why your strategy has pros and cons and being able to debate that is important... going on a hizzy fit because the community is like, 'lol no' is immature af...

Later found out that guy has a history on the Steam forums of posting low quality how-tos to RU-vid, sharing them to Steam forums, and then going on a tantrum when ppl try to correct him. I guess the definition of insanity really is doing the same thing all the time and expecting a different result.

That's a bit subjective depending on your needs and desires. Best weight to warmth ratio? Best protection? Lightest? Best warmth overall? I do have some guides in the pipeline that will discuss some of the 'best' all rounders of items eventually.

You'd want your outerwear to get wet first before your inner. Never let your clothes freeze if at all possible.

What i cant find anything about is do clothing decay faster in a container example a locker bcs thats convenient. It can fit a whole outfit. So comparing putting an item in a container counting as stored vs putting it be it either shelf/floor and table and if the method putting it outside a container count as stored to or it counts as worn indoors if no one had answer i get bck to edit this. With experimenting with 2 wool toque fully repaired 1 in a medicine cabinet and 1 on a workbensh table bcs in my quonset thats only place i could have space for that experiment. Side note didntcwaste cloth bcs it was beachcombed. Bcs i know 1 item that decays slower when worn like some crafted clothing would not benefit from being stored when their decay value decays faster in a container such as the bearskin coat with 0.133 a day stored and 0.033 when worn indoors and the moose hide cloak decays 0.033 stored and 0.027 when worn indoors according to TLD fandom. Im doing the experiment on stalker and fandom uses stalker as default decay

Are you sure about the climbing thing? I always take off my clothes before climbing, and it sure looks like my bar goes down slower (or rather that the overall energy is more than when wearing them.). Could be just a visual thing or a psychological thing. haha

Climbing is off of your fatigue level, not worn clothing. Also, if you rewatch, you'll note I wasn't mentioning the speed at which the climbing stamina decays, but rather that the sprint stamina reduction, or mobility penalty from clothing, does not carry over to the amount of stamina you can utilize while climbing! Your climbing stamina can decrease faster in scenarios, but that's only because of your fatigue levels. The more tired you are, the slower you climb and the faster your stamina drops.

Climbing is depend on overall weight you carry. So unless you drop the clothing off your inventory completely, it will still affect you when you climb. Even if you are really light like 17kg overall, if the climb is long like going up. You might want to rest on nearby ledge to regain your temp fatigue.

Custom clothes are damn heavy... Most of them don't worth it, at least in Pilgrim mode... Maybe only hat and gloves.

You probably NEVER need crafted clothes in Pilgrim. They're mainly only needed in Loper.

As loper doesn´t have most of the good thermal value clothes, I agree, crafted is the only way. However, over a longish run, say 100+ days, Stalker also needs carefull consideration for use of cloth. It runs out really quickly.

Wear a wolfskin coat, (or bear skin) and change it to the long squeak as the wolves will sometimes do just that as they run away in fear.

There's a lot that goes into The Long Dark. There's a lot of mechanics that at the beginning of the game, it probably isn't worth your time to focus heavily on. However, as you progress and get better at the game and start surviving for a few weeks, it's important to understand the deeper mechanics of these systems so you can be in tip top shape and have the best odds of success in The Long Dark!

@@francoisdubord4204The game is not your typical games, and even on easy mode, you can still die of something that seems trivial. I actually fell through thin ice once and got instant hypothermia in Foglorn Muskeg. Luckily, my cloth was so good at that time, even fell in the water and have most clothes wet, I didn't lose any warmth, and was able to start fire to start drying my clothes.

Apart from comically weak performance of TLD's firearms , the lack of inner and outer layer for boots and especially for gloves is for me unintelligible. Simply because they are an insulated boot liners, practically a soft warm boots that can be putted inside the actual boots. And, for the more thermal protection for hands, they are big fingerless insulated gloves, that can by take off to make it possible to work on something, or shoot, with thiner 5-finger gloves still on, and then putted back on for travel. The game is lacking in that areas. Also every piece of clothing, every layer should be calculated as the protection to damage, not only the outer layers. I'm sorry, but if someone wears at the same time four layers of thick clothing on the torso and legs, the doggo or wolf can only piss or crap onto this person, because until it rips trough the layers, it'll be half dead, because of the rock (...or club, hatchet... trench shovel...) to the ribs and head...
