Wayne is a top notch guy. I own an old 99 club car and was having issues with the charger not charging the batteries. I telephoned him and left a message and he took time to return my call and spent probably an hour on the phone helping me troubleshoot my problems. It's a shame that he lives in California and I live in North Carolina, he would be an excellent neighbor to have thanks again for being such a GREAT GUY
Very nice installation and video Wayne. I’d like to share my similar experiences with your followers if you don’t mind. I bought a single 48 volt 96 amp battery for my Bad Boy Buggy (EZGO). The battery manufacturer claimed on their website that it’s a simple drop-in installation. Definitely not true. Many others make the same claim. Your video clearly shows the same experience I had that it requires some fairly technical fabricating skills to customize the battery tray floor to accept most of the new lithium phosphate battery upgrades. In my cart, it has 4 wheel drive and a separate motor and controller for each axle which requires way more amps than a standard golf cart. After customizing the battery floor to drop-in a single sheet of aluminum tread plate, it made a very neat job, especially after thoroughly cleaning the rusted steel frame and painting it black. My battery did not come with any instructions or specs, but, the specs are on their website. They don’t even make a recommendation to make sure your new battery will have proper amperage to prevent overloading it and shutting itself down and being stranded way out on your farm. My advice is to purchase 4 12 volt batteries (48 volts) like shown in this video and save yourself all the headaches of returning it and repurchasing another set of stronger batteries. My 48/96 did not come with a 12 volt inverter to run all your accessories including the winch. That was a separate purchase from another manufacturer, which required a new fuse panel and a lot of new wiring. Tech support has not responded after 5 days now so I’m going to shop for a different brand even though this brand is the only one with a 11 year warranty. There’s not a lot out there yet to help each other besides videos like this one. Thank you Wayne for taking the time to share so much useful information to us DIYrs. Otherwise, find a professional that’s done these upgrades before learning the hard way like I did. My plan is to start over with four 12 volt batteries with 200-400 amps.
I had 1 and only 1 issue with a RoyPow unit, and that was it was shutting down . The issue was the unit couldn't handle the amps that the upgraded controller and motor was pushing. So I installed a eco battery in, and thar fixed the problem. So now if a cart has an upgraded controller, I either install a P series RoyPow or a ecobattery.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 Thanks Wayne. I understand my Bad Boy Buggy has a Sevcon Millpak 500 amp controller. That’s likely the reason my new 48 volt 96 amp LiFePO4 battery would go into shut down mode leaving me stranded. It has to be reset by plugging in its factory charger so it has to be towed back. Do you think that I would be wise to go with a lot more amps, say maybe 200-400 amps?
Do you mean less amps? With a roypow unit, yes less amps unless you go with a P series unit. If you are going with 12 volt drop in batteries, you are braver than me, I quit trying those they were terrible
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 the manufacturer told me I needed more amps than my 96 amps to run a dual motor 4 wheel drive cart and that’s why it was shutting down.
Hi wayne! i have the 2005 DS 48 volt and i have a 3 pin connector to the OBC, u told me to re-route the #10 to the main negative of the battery . thats fine with me. but im confuse to WHERE to re-route the small skinny yellow wire coming from the solenoid. ? thnaks alot my man! much appreciated!!!
Wayne, great videos! Do you have any plans to do a video using a LiFePO4 pack like Extreme Teams, Revolution, or RoyPow and Navitas AC conversion on a DS?
No plans as of yet,, not too much call for a Navitas controllers around here. Also, most people won't put that kind of money into a ds, when they can get a much newer cart, with some of that stuff already on the cart.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 Thanks. That seems to be the hot ticket back east. Guess I'll be a west coast pioneer, as I decided to dump money into my DS rather than buy new.
Wayne, I have a 1995 club car ds conversion to lithium and trying to bypass the obc, but I don't have a blue and white wire to jumper at the obc. Are there other colored wires to connect
Sir you seem very knowledgeable on this stuff. I am trying to replace my 1500w Electric Atv's 48v lead acid battery (4x12v 20ah) with a 48v lithium battery system Do you think either the Allied 48v 30ah or Relion 48v 30 Ah battery could properly replace my old acid batter and run my electric ATV?
I also have a 90’s DS, but with 6 8v batteries. Struggling on what Ah rating batts. to go with and hoping you can tell us how the 4 12v 50Ah compare to original lead acid setup as far as runtime / mileage capacity? I’m leaning toward multiple lithium batteries vs. one big single battery due to cost difference being approx. 1/2 from what I’m seeing
Hi Wayne. Was thinking of installing 3 48v, 30ah Allied Lithium in parallel on a 2006 Precedent, do you think this configuration would be fine. Would like your opinion on this.
yes absolutely that would be fine!. I have been using the Allied lithiums for a year now, and just recently have been thinking about going to, or at least trying the Relion 48 volt lithiums. It seems any battery meter i use with the Allied has issues. Relion is coming out with their own meter this month.
So I have a 2003 Club Car DS and I am confused on the wiring as I do not have a blue or white wire for the bypass. I looked up this video to assist me with the installation because I also have lithium ion Allied batteries to install. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
So since you don't have the blue and white wires on such an old cart, don't be concerned about those. Just the # 10 black, and if you have a skinny yellow wire on the solenoid.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 I know this is an old post, but I ran into the same issue with my triangular three wire plug from my OBC to my controller. You mentioned the skinny yellow wire from the solenoid, where does it go? Do I need to disconnect it from the solenoid? Thanks!
Yes it will fit. If your cart has 12 volt batteries, if is easy. If you have 8 volt batteries, you will need to do a little modification of the frame, but very doable.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 I'm about to pull the trigger tomorrow on BigBattery Eagles. They would be drop in replacement for my 8volts. just gotta figure out the 12v acc conversion
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 bypass obc for lithium.. I figured it out though, nothing needed jumping, just had to cut the neg going to obc and hook direct to battery. Works like a champ now
Hey Wayne, the #10 black wire that you cut and said you were going to cap. Did you extend that wire and also route it to the main negative? I see you have a wire running from control box to the main negative. Just wondering if it’s the same wire you cut at the control box side. Great video!
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 so you only need one of the 2 black wires running to the negative and splice the smaller white and blue wires together and that’s it? I saw you had the black wire from the charging port going to the negative as well as a black wire from the controller to the negative in this video. So just to be clear I only need one of the two black #10 wires going to the main negative?
You have 2 ways to reroute that black wire, as long as you have the wire going from the charge receptacle to a main negative, that can be the main battery pack negative or it can be B- on the controller.
Hi Wayne, I just installed two Allied Lithium batteries in a 1993 Club Car DS. As soon as I connected the batteries, I started smelling something burning and the solenoid resistor was very hot. I ordered a new solenoid and resistor and just replaced the old ones, reconnected batteries and same burning smell. Ignition is off and charger not connected. Any ideas why? I disconnected the negative terminal and it cooled down but can’t figure out the next step.
Is your cart a 48 volt cart, and you bought 48 volt batteries? It sounds like you wired them in series instead of in parallel, and are pushing 96 volts thru your 48 volt solenoid.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 mine is a 36V. I have two 36V batteries, and they are wired in parallel. Is there a way I can send you a picture? From what I can ascertain there is no OBC on this one.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 thanks for getting back to me. We are upgrading our club car to lithium as per your video. You take out the obc and jumper the white and blue. Why?
I just got a 2015 cart from a dealer with lithium batteries. When I press the petal, it is full speed. So I'm either not going or i'm going full top speed. This doesn't seem right to me. I asked them and they said the Lithium carts are that way. I think he's full of it. Any thoughts here?
wayne martin - just a follow up, I got mad at them and they quickly realized that I wasn’t imagining things. Got it back today and it works perfectly as it should. A happy ending!
Hi Wayne I have a question for u r allied lithium batteries any gd because where I live don't know one install roy power lithium batteries and those r the one I want I have a club car 2010 and u help me out on some Advice
The Allied batteries seem to be ok now. When they first came out, lots of problems. Now they have the 48 volt batteries, you need at least 2 of them, 3 is better.
Cost depends on a few things : who does the work, you or paying someone? Type of battery you Want to install. Ah of battery you want to install? Are you picking them up or having them delivered? What voltage is your cart? Do you need to add a reducer? Lots of variables.
You have to bypass the obc , if your cart has one. If you bypass the obc, then your original charger will no longer work with your cart. So if you have a cart now, with a working obc, then you will need a different charger if you install lithium batteries.
@@andyriddle7352 There has been a learning curve with them. We have learned quite a bit with them. If you have a high speed motor or big controller, Do Not Use any less than the 60ah batteries.
Not enough AMPs with your 12 volt Lithium batteries. you need at least 100 amps to do a couple of rounds of golf. Two Golfers, two sets of clubs and other accessories you could have 500 lbs plus the weight of the cart.
Not sure how you calculated that. To date, 17 installs of 60 ah batteries, not 1 complaint or problem. They get 2rounds in plus driving to course. So maybe these are not for you.
Wayne, you need to change your settings to "not for kids". Your videos no longer allow comments or the ability for anyone to save the video to their favorites.
I thought this was supposed to be battery and snow not cleaning maintenance and everything else not associated with the batteries do your prep work first then shoot the video
I ran into the same issues as Wayne here when I did mine. It’s important to know that your battery tray and steel fram will have a lot of rust when you remove all of your old lead acid batteries. Sanding and painting will be required and likely some cutting, drilling, bolting, or welding before you paint. I cut and custom fit an aluminum tread plate floor in mine for a very clean look and use a HD ratchet strap to tighten them down to eye bolts. Now you’ll understand why Wayne included this in his video.
