Movie Summary:
Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school's pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was -- and falls for him.

Very fun reaction! I haven't seen anyone comment on this as yet, so I may be the first- This is a modern adaptation of "Emma" by Jane Austen. An absolutely brilliant recreation of the classic novel from the early 1800s. Amongst those who study classic literature and contemporary adaptations done well, "Clueless" is in the top five. In the same vein, that is being a high school modern adaptation of classic works, is "10 Things I Hate About You" with Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. It is Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" and a brilliant movie, if you haven't seen it.

My personal fav Emma is the 1996 Gwyneth Paltrow one that introduced me to the plot in the first place, (and yes, I know it’s Miramax, which sucks) but I adore the cast. I think the only Emma I don’t like is the 80s BBC miniseries. I couldn’t get on board with that Mr. Knightley. The actor is visibly much older than even Knightley is supposed to be (37). I really liked the 2020 one, despite the small changes. I think Anya Taylor-Joy was brilliant. And while some people hated Bill Nighy, if one reads the book properly, Mr Woodhouse is specifically NOT an invalid. He’s a hypochondriac. I’ve never seen another Emma get that right. I had never picked up on it until I reread Emma post that film. The 07 one is a bit too serious/almost victorian for me, and I think it lets Emma be a bit too kind, but I certainly don’t hate it. Although I much prefer Jonny Lee Miller as Edmund in the 99 Mansfield. Yep, I know, more controversial opinions. But Patricia Rozema was totally right to change Fanny Price for a film. Book Fanny would have fallen totally flat. The narration does wonders for explaining her in the book. Films should be adapted as needed.

The bit where Tai says she never had "straight" friends before and Cher/Dionne being confused is because "straight" where Tai comes from means "straight-edge" or those who do not drink or use drugs, while in California where Cher and Dionne are from it means "not gay". This is after the conversation about "herbal refreshments" and the Coke/coke misunderstanding, where they warned her away from Travis. Lol- a copy of the photograph- that's a film camera. Cher is played by Alicia Silverstone, she got famous from Aerosmith's "Cryin'", "Amazing" and "Crazy” videos along with Liv Tyler. Definitely check those out. She's in the movie The Crush of which I think that whole movie is sus. The writers, producers, director- it's like some kind of fantasy situation and just shows another facet of men being afraid of and blaming women for their thoughts (but I won't spoil it if you want to watch it). She's also in Blast from the Past- which is one of my favorite movies, a definite re-watch, and also stars Brendan Frasier.

I looked up how she died. According to IMDb, it was pneumonia & anemia. Apparently Abnormally high levels of metals and poisons were discovered in her hair and her husband died of something similar months later. Her dad wants to investigate to make sure they weren’t murdered or if was an accident. How sad! 😢

The only reason a C wasn't good enough is because it was in Debate and her dad was an attorney. It's like getting a C in Gym with your dad being a coach or trainer something. It's also why he was so proud that she argued her grade up two letter grades; the arguing was more valuable to him than the actual grade.

Bruh - you've never seen Scooby Doo 2 or Beauty Shop with Queen Latifah? Alicia Silverstone was only 16 when Clueless was shot. She primarily does thrillers, dramas, and horror movies. However, she's done a lot of sitcoms and theater work as well. She was the one who popularized the navel ring in the 90's. Most of her stuff isn't very commercial besides those 2 movies mentioned above and Blast From The Past with Brendan Frasier.

Clueless is the best modern adaptation to Jane Austens book Emma. Its a loose adaptation but if it were closer then it couldnt be a 'modern' adaptation. Besides, many of the characters reflect the originals

I worshiped Alicia Silverstone in the 90s. I had her haircut and begged my mom to let me dye it blonde. (Thank God she refused! 😂) Alicia was the 'it' girl. She is a great actress. Please check out Excess Baggage, The Crush, and The Babysitter. Warning. These are nothing like Clueless. She also played Batgirl in Batman & Robin.

Alicia silverstone is still a actress but now mostly does smaller roles. A more recent role was as the mum in the new babysitters club series. I think acting took a backseat to raising her son after she became a mom. She also now spends alot of time as a animal activist and advocating for a vegan lifestyle. She has a youtube channel called the kind life with alicia silverstone showing the lifestyle of her son and herself and how they try to live more sustainably and she also promotes a vitamin line. I love watching her videos. The guy who played travis i would say is probably most recognisable as josh from roadtrip. Brittney died as others said, but i heard her house had a mold problem and ive seen some pics where the house looked cluttered like she was a bit of a hoarder which might have contributed. People were sus about the way her mom and husband were acting after her death but her husband died in a similar way soon after. I remember a documentry about it and they never really worked out exactly how she died. 😢

She done a lot of TV series and I think is in one now. She’s experiencing a resurgence in her career, kind of like Brenden Fraiser did leading up to his success with The Whale. Alicia is starring in a few anticipated projects either in production or post. You should check out some of her 90’s films (i.e., The Crush) and the three Aerosmith videos she stars in.

I was a very good skateboarder but I was also friends with the star basketball player. I was just nice to everyone and everyone was nice to me. There were a few times I was bullied for my cleft lip, I just didn’t take it. I’m still very good friends with the rich girls and the punks. I just identified with everyone so no one really fucked with me in a bad way.

This movie was everything in my high school years, ('94-'98). That Clueless soundtrack was playing nonstop in my room and car lol. Hilarious yet deep story. It's an iconic film of the 90s.

People in the comments have covered most of my favorite things about this movie, but I first saw Alicia Silverstone in Kenneth Branagh's unusual interpretation of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost. It's a cut-down version of the play with songs from 1930s-ish musical numbers stuck in. Unusual, but fun with a great cast. In addition, the song that plays when Josh sees Cher walks down the stairs to Christian is from the musical Gigi, where the male protagonist realizes that the heroine is a woman, not a little girl anymore, and that he is very much attracted to her.

I have this movie on DVD and it has a special feature where I learned that a "Betty" was a girl who's too good for the man like from "The Flintstones" with Betty Rubble being too good to be with Barney Rubble… I didn't hear the turn of phrase first time in "Encino Man" with Brendan Fraser, Paulie Shore and Sean Astin 😉😉 33:03 btw this is a reason why I don't assume a Latino is from Mexico… there's other countries in South America that a person can be from… 😉😉

15:24 🤣 A copy of the photo. In 1995 we didn’t have digital cameras. I’d have to look it up to find out when they came out. I love digital photography. Pretty much all pictures were printed and you had to put actual film in the camera. PLUS there was no way of viewing the photo until you had the film developed. Imagine your wedding or vacation or anything, you just have to pray that the lighting was good enough if the flash didn’t go off. And hope that you had it framed the way you wanted. You have no idea how many people would develop film to find mom can’t take a picture so the one of you and your brother, she got you from the chest down. Completely lobbed off your heads. The money wasted to find out you didn’t get one good photo. 😕
