Fun fact about the costuming: it's even more brilliant than you initially think, because this is the movie that actually CREATED a lot of these late-90s fashion trends. The costume designer didn't have a budget for tons of expensive labels and current-trend looks, so instead she researched and innovated a bunch of looks that she thought would be the next big trends. And then when the movie came out and was a big hit, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy, because teens and 20-somethings wanted to dress like Cher and her friends. :)

Depending on where you lived, "as if" was frequent slang as early as the late 70s. The Valley Girl thing had spread around California etc by that point, bringing "as if" with it, but it was Frank Zappa's "Valley Girl" and its frequent radio play that really wedged it into the broader mainstream. Somewhat ironic since the song was kind of mercilessly poking fun...

Great reaction. And dude, you talking about the high schoolers being at the wedding reminded me. In the 80, the high school chemistry teacher was getting married. He was probably the most disliked teacher on campus…. because he could be tough and extremely sarcastic. But by senior year, he and I developed this love hate relationship where we’d spend a few minutes each week taking jabs at each other in class. Anyway, my friend went James Bond on his a$$ and found out where he was getting married. Then dressed in black pants, black turtle necks, black berets and we showed up at the church. No one ever saw us. We hid behind a sign and took pictures as everyone arrived. Then I climbed a tree over the walkway they’d come down between the outer building and the church. Then a few as they left. We put the whole thing together as a chemistry experiment with our theory and so forth with the photos on each page. Keep in mind, it was the 80’s. No computers no fancy cameras or anything. So it might seem lame but it was pretty freaking cool for the time. I ran into him a few years ago. He still has it…… but not the wife. 🤣 when he told me they split, he followed it up with, “And once again Wathern, I’ve proven you wrong”. In that their love would outlast time. Yeah, I know it’s vomitus, I was young and idealistic.

You're right. The quote goes on: "It is a far, far better thing I do, than I have ever done before." And the character (Sydney Carton) is referring to self-sacrifice. 23:48 If she knew who Pippi Longstockings was I don't think she'd take it as an insult. Pippi Longstockings is a character in a Swedish book series (though I first heard about it in German class). Her mother's dead, her sea captain father was lost at sea presumed dead though Pippi is convinced he's now king of an island of cannibals. She's got read hair that sticks out in two braids out the side of her head. She's a young girl, but she's incredibly strong - as in she can carry grown men and her horse over her head with her bare hands. She lives in a house by herself (her father bought it for when he retired for the sea) with her horse and her pet monkey and a huge bag full of gold coins her father left her, and she basically just does whatever she wants whenever she wants to since she's more than capable of taking care of herself. She's not bad, just doesn't really understand social conventions or rules about children. Her best friends are two children who live next door to her who are perfectly well-behaved and love spending time with her because it means that they can do anything when they're with her.

In fact, Amy Heckerling (the director) had done exactly such a movie back in the 80s: "Fast Times At Ridemont High", one of the better of that ilk. It's based on Jane Austen's book Emma, where the love interest is her closest neighbor and a close friend of the family, even before his younger brother married her older sister. So he was a sort of older brother figure who was constantly stopping by and who tried to bring her back down to earth unlike everyone else in her life who thought she was perfect. I think the ex-wife's son who still has a great relationship with the main character's dad was a pretty neat way to translate that for modern audiences(the 15 year age gap would have been hard to swallow), although I personally would have made it clear she was in her last year of high school and he was in his first year of college.

look up lip sync battle with alicia silverstone...youll see the iconic outfit again...also look up the song " Crying", "Amazing" , and "Crazy" by Aerosmith. That is how her career really started. Also in "Crazy" it features Liv Tyler

"The Crush" is another Alicia Silverstone movie that is a must see, if you haven't already. She is fantastic for the role and the movie is great! Clueless was made in the 90s for the 90s (we and those of my generation, were teens in the 90s ourselves). It's nostalgic now.

There is an amazing meme/fan theory of 90's movies that ties into Breckin Meyer's skaterboi and Donald Faison's shaved-head-BF characters. They were a part of an IRL friend group including Seth Green that starred it multiple movies together.... so the joke is all of them are actually playing the exact same characters over and over at different points in their lives.

Since you guys enjoy this movie so much, I highly recommend reacting to the 2020 version of Emma with Anya Taylor-Joy. Many other people like other versions better, but I personally think that one is the best--it's vibrant and hilarious, with lots of physical comedy. The themes and character arcs that you mentioned at the end are all in the original. Her love-interest is her brother-in-law's brother, rather than an ex-stepbrother. It would be fun to see a reaction by someone who already knows the modern-day version of the story!

I love you guys reaction to the line, If anything happens to my daughter I own a 45 and a Shovel. You both where so shocked something like that was Said. I think what you fail to realize is how often Fathers actually said that to boys in the 80s and early 90s. Or how many may or may not have ended up in ditches. Though more like at the Alter weather they liked it or not.

"as if" didn't exactly come from this movie. This movie incorporated real life California valley girl slang in it, and then the movie was so well liked people everywhere started talking like that, but people were actually talking like that before the movie.
