Just putting mine back together after doing the clutch (2005 GS). small garage , no assistant, but I'm enjoying it. Nice video. 🙂

Mine, a 2006, was in the garage for weeks on. I was desperate to get it done and running. Now I understand the trouble Victor my mechanic went through getting it fixed. My word! 👍

In the market for a GS and the clutch job on the aircooled models has been a point of hesitation for me, BUT the aircooled models have a certain charm that I do like. Your video helped demonstrate that while this is definitely an involved process, it is still very much doable if you have a bit of wrenching experience! Thanks for this!
@BMWMOAorg
@BMWMOAorg 2 года назад
Airhead clutch jobs are easier - you can remove the transmission without splitting the bike like this. This process on the 2005 GS is for the hexheads.

@@BMWMOAorg Thanks for the reply!! Just to be sure I understand 100%, I thought "airhead" meant anything prior to 2013 when it went water cooled. Would a 2010-2012 entail a different process than the 2005?

@@GVMotoring Airheads are the 2-valve air(only)-cooled boxers from 1970-93/94 (anything R 100 or smaller). Oilheads are the air/oil-cooled 4V boxers from 1994-2003/04 (R 1100/1150 & R 1200 C, which is really an 1150 but bored out a bit). Hexheads start 2004/05 (R 1200) then move to Camheads around 2011 IIRC (could be wrong on that). Wetheads are liquid-cooled boxers starting 2013/14 (R 1200) until the advent of the 1250 boxers.

Great video sir! Thank you. Real quick, My '12 R1200GSA is hitting only on the left cylinder. I was cruising home on the highway and the rt. cylinder just dropped out. Plugs are good and I swapped uppers with lowers and right to left and confirmed they all spark while cranking as held to the frame. I bought two new primary coils and installed them with no change and even swapped in the event I got a bad brand new part. I do have an O2 sensor #1 code (271A) that comes up in Moto Scan so I removed them both, cleaned them and swapped them and the same code returned. I swapped lower coils, though they didn't fit I still got them connected and snapped in with no change. I confirmed both injectors spray fuel in a good pattern while cranking the bike but bought a new one for the right side anyway and installed in to no avail. The throttle body valve does turn with throttle twist as I could feel it with my fingers. The bike will fire up on just the left cylinder but the right cylinder, with spark and fuel does not want to fire! Thanks for reading so far sir, and if you would please let me know what else I could try I would greatly appreciate it sir. TY

XT1200X Super Tenere is looking ever more appealing - a 30min job instead, and it's a wet clutch so can handle more slipping/abuse to start with. And don't have the same stanchion, rear wheel bearing, shaft drive issues... and the Yamaha apparently has a lower center of gravity.

Alex you have been misinformed about the lower cg. Getting a Super Ten will make you appreciate your next GS. Besides, the the wet head ( newer GS) has wet clutch that you access from the front. For your 2007 the process once you got down to the clutch itself would be the same. There may be some parts differences, so best to check that with the parts fiche. The big difference would be separating the pieces of the frame and body, but the clutch is the clutch and not much changed from 2005-2009.

Yes, you can replace the friction disc on its own (there's only one in this setup) but because getting in there is such a hassle - and expensive if you're paying somebody to do it - you're better off replacing everything. The cost of the additional parts is less than the cost of having somebody go back in there to replace something else that fails in 1500 miles.

@BMWMOAorg

@@orangelion03 I don't recommend replacing the friction disc alone. The additional expense of replacing the other parts while you're in there is IMO worth it in the long run. Especially plan on replacing any/all accessible seals - that's the mistake we made that set us back a whole day.

I don’t know if you still respond to posts on this being a couple years old but if you do it would be appreciated. I have helped a friend who got a 2005 with a bad clutch. Never done one but it wasn’t to bad having a manual and I’ve put more clutches than I ca remember in every vehicle imaginable. His clutch had completely disintegrated had to use puller with a lot of effort to get what was left of the clutch off the transmission shaft. Had to file the splines on the shaft to get new clutch on and moving freely. It’s all together and I don’t have first gear. It wont shift to first. I have gears going up the last one down I assume is 1st it’s not there I can turn output shaft as if it’s in neutral. Any suggestions???
@BMWMOAorg
@BMWMOAorg 3 года назад
Wow, that sounds like an ordeal to say the least! First guess (without being able to see the bike of course) sounds like something's gone on in the transmission that's preventing you from shifting into 1st. If you can shift into every other gear, then the clutch is working properly.

So, question: you replaced the clutch components without changing the "flywheel" as you call it. BMW refers to it as the "Clutch Housing" I see you got a new pushrod - was yours bent? I'm doing this same job on the same year and I'm told by a website that I need to replace my "clutch housing" and pushrod as they were 'updated' in April 2006. My question is WHY?!
@BMWMOAorg
@BMWMOAorg 6 лет назад
The pushrod was not bent, but it was cheap enough that I felt it was a good idea to replace it anyway. I didn't replace the flywheel/clutch housing on the advice of George.
@orangelion03
@orangelion03 5 лет назад
Why did the pressure plate and housing cover require replacement? Was this necessary to accommodate the aftermarket clutch disc? Were they deformed or damaged? Is this SOP for a clutch change? That's around $700 in addition of the cost of the disc.
@BMWMOAorg
@BMWMOAorg 5 лет назад
The pressure plate is effectively a spring; IMO it should be replaced along with the other components. You could go without replacing the cover, but my thinking at that point is to just replace all of it because it's such a hassle to get to those components in the first place. The aftermarket friction disc did not require the replacement of the other parts, that's just SOP as far as I'm concerned.

Most BMWs made since 2013 have wet clutches, so this process really only applies to R bikes made before that, K bikes before the K 1600s, (at least - maybe farther back) and the R nineT series. Plus the new R 18. Anyway, lots & lots of BMWs with wet clutches out there. Benefit of the dry clutch is they almost always last a long, long time.

I still kind of want an R1200gs, but the more I learn about these bikes, the less I respect this "German Construction".
