Clutch-Less Variable Displacement AC Compressor.

Due to the ever increasing fight for high efficiency and fuel economy, automobile manufacturers, especially in Europe, have developed the clutch-less AC compressor. Sanden being one of those compressor manufacturers, has develop the PXE series variable displacement AC compressor, which we'll use as a study example for this technology. On standard compressors, the belt turns a pulley with an electric clutch. When you turn on the AC, the clutch engages, and the piston starts pumping to compress the refrigerant. There are two problems with this traditional approach. One, a compressor needs a fair amount of power. In cars with small engines, the engagement of the clutch to activate the compressor puts a big load on the engine, especially if it is idling. Two, the compressor will produce low flow or not enough when the engine is idling, and high flow when the engine is at high RPM and possibly too much refrigerant flow.
In 1985, Delphi then Harrison, developed the V5 variable displacement compressor. In early 2003...

It's not that it's more expensive, it's that it is a newer technology. But you'd be amazed at how many cars are now using this latest AC development. Often times they don't even advertise it because folks don't know much about AC systems, so it'll just confuse the public, but it's there. Yesterday I saw a tiny KIA with GDI or gasoline direct injection (just finished the series for that) and I was shocked. So look close next time. It may have a VD compressor. Thanks

I have this Sanden in my 2008 VW Rabbit Mk 5 and I love it! With over 157K miles on it, the system has been trouble-free. However, the OEM solenoid was not a good design and did not allow the compressor to cool fast enough or cool enough. I replaced it with an upgrade RKX AC Compressor Control Valve Solenoid which makes it work perfectly, faster and cooler. I do have one question: What controls the coolant temperature, fan speed? If I want it to be less cool with the fan at low, I can only add warm air to it. Great video!

Although the compressor has a low internal failure rate due to continuous internal lubrication, the pulley bearings stil fail. Unfortunately most manufacturers don't sell the pulley bearing separately forcing people to buy the whole compressor. These compressors can be double what common clutched compressor cost.

Trust me, let it run without refrigerant (what happens when the AC system has a leak and the owner just doesn't care about it and lets it run dry), rev it, and the compressor seizes. No refrigerant means no lubricant flow across the system and whatever is left inside the compressor either gets pushed out (remember, no VDC can ever reach absolute 0% displacement; if that were to happen, you'd need to tear it up to bring the pistons back into stroke) or carbonizes pretty soon due to the intense frictional heat. A clutch equipped VDC is much much more reliable than this stuff.

CONTINUED FROM 1: The end result is that at the expansion valve outlet, there's cold refrigerant but enough to cool a lower volume if passing air through the evaporator. This is that same as cycling the old style compressor clutch, but much more efficient. Pressures should remain at the standard or around 39 PSI low and about 250 PSI High. Fluctuation may change a bit of course, but that's the rule of thumb for r134 and even the older r12. Makes sense?

WOnderful, wonderful. Thanks again Mandy! I do have a question - with this approach to an AC compressor - I wonder why more automobiles don't use this type of system? Even today - we still see the typical electromagnetic clutch on belt-driven compressors. It it more expensive for this option?

Il problema e' solo quello che oggi non ce' piu' il tempo per formare professionalmente il personale, quindi speriamo che il concetto dia buoni risultati nel tempo.

2012 kia optima clutchless compressor....cold air only when revving rpms up to 2500 rpm...low pressure side is high at idle and warm air out of vents....raise rpms and it lowers but is still high and air is cold out of vents...bad solenoid valve? Maybe sticking and not opening all the way? When rpms increase it spins more but displacement never gets biggers because solenoid valve is not letting it?

So you take a variable stroke tilt block mechanism that's been on hydraulics (think ship's ram steering) since the 1930's, and now it's a completely new thing to patent if you apply it to air conditioning in the 2000's. I guess it's all in how it's used, but some "lego-bricks" really aren't as new as they're made out to be.

@carlosmejia5728

Then you're doomed !
@teravolt6113
@teravolt6113 5 лет назад
Even if there's no refrigerant at all some oil may remain inside the compressor's crankcase and keep things lubed up (albeit very noisily) until you forcefully rev the engine. If it gets revved up too much, the oil can get pushed away inside the discharge piping and leave things inside unlubed, or heat up too much due to the intense friction (with a proper refrigerant charge, the compressor's internals are cooled down by the cold suction gas; keep in mind that some friction is always there even if it's at minimum stroke because minimum stroke is NEVER 0 stroke) and degrade into something that no longer functions as a lubricant. That's when everything seizes up. These compressors don't have a sump and a dedicated oil pump unlike what you find inside, for example, a Valeo TM-31.

This looks more like an Harrison V5 or Sanden SD-V wobble plate VDC than a clutchless swashplate VDC. I don't think wobble plate clutchless VDCs have ever been made, even though some wobble plate VDCs (Sanden SD6C12 1355F for example, and also an Harrison V5 on a Renault application) have been successfully equipped with the solenoid displacement control valve peculiar of clutchless ones.

@ADPTraining

No, that's not what the video says. If you loose charge, the swashplate inclination goes to nothing or zero angles. The compressor keeps turning, but the piston stroke is none-existent. For all practical purposes, the only components turning are the pulley and shaft. These get lubricated anyway from the circulating oil and the oil inside the compressor. Makes sense?

I think this design will vibrate more due to an unbalanced mass rotating causing fatigue failure in the parts as well as efficiency loss. This is the trade-off for the benefits.
@ADPTraining
@ADPTraining 10 лет назад
It can not vibrate or it'll disintegrate. Most cars are now using this type of compressor.
@amedmesa814
@amedmesa814 10 лет назад
As far as I am aware rotating mechanical devices experience vibration unless it is center mass balanced. Dampening reduces the effect of vibration fatigue. Does the piston act dually as a dampener?
@teravolt6113
@teravolt6113 5 лет назад
@@amedmesa814 What you're really seeing here is an older wobble plate design. The real design used in clutchless compressor is the swashplate, where the pistons are mounted on the edges of the rotating plate by means of hemispherical bearings ("shoes").

The pressure relation is the same. At lower strokes mode the compressor will just be pumping LESS refrigerant, due to lower demands of course. Keep in mind that even if the displacement is lower, AC compressors pump LIQUID, which can not be compressed. You can compress a gas, but the liquid VOLUME stays the same even though it's pressurized. At lower strokes, the compressor is still pumping liquid, but at lower volumes and lower stress on the engine. CONTINUED 1

@teravolt6113
@teravolt6113 5 лет назад
The chemistry of double end capped PAG 46 oil, and the cooling effect of the suction gas, is what keeps wear rate at a minimum on a perfectly kept AC system. The real problem comes when it's run on increasingly low refrigerant levels, making the oil circulation rate inside the system decrease and the wear rate increase. Run it with no refrigerant inside and drive the car as usual, and you'll immediately get a seized compressor.

badest designthis compressor designed t replace periodicaly ,not just compressor also the radiator and evaporator hould change if this dump compressor brake-down.until now i dont have any idea why this design use in many hight class vehicle,and its not logical the compressor circle all timewhen engine work????????????????in clutch system the compressor just work if the AC turned on but in this bad system the compressor circle round time to reduce the life cicle.the idea of variable desplacement just to bay more and more.i have this system in my car mercedes w203 chang the compressor twice then fail again , thats gude e to replace it by clutch compressor for model 1999 e clas cmpresor now it work from 4 years in grate condition without any fault.from month ago my LR3 2006 compressor destroiedi seel anew compressor fron ebay its work just for 1 monthnow im lookig for alternative clutch compresor.
@teravolt6113
@teravolt6113 5 лет назад
The real problem with these compressors is that if the refrigerant runs out for whatever reason, they remain operational, unlike ones with the clutch, which get turned off since a pressure switch or sensor senses the low refrigerant pressure and prevents the compressor from engaging until proper pressure is restored. No refrigerant means that the lubricant can't flow around. Some oil may still remain inside the compressor's crankcase and keep things lubricated as long as the engine is kept into idle, but if the engine gets revved up then there's a chance it either gets pushed out into the HP pipe or carbonizes due to the intense frictional heat that develops (usually cooled off by the suction refrigerant), and you get a seized compressor as a result. That's the real reason behind their failures.
